Chapter 3

Author: Jessie Z
After Liam left, Dominic leaned back in my chair, a smug smirk playing on his lips.

"Harper, you want to know why I'm so sure Marina's fine?"

"Why?" Harper asked, feigning curiosity.

Dominic leaned back, a cold smirk on his lips.

"Because Marina," he said, his voice a strange mix of pride and contempt, "is a monster. The crushing pressure of the deep sea? She was born in it. It's her playground."

Monster.

He called me a monster.

The memories came rushing back, the pain I had tried so hard to forget.

Ten years ago, in the deep-sea temple, I prayed to the Moon Goddess to be with him.

"Princess, are you certain you wish to make this bargain?" the Goddess's voice softened with sorrow, echoing from the altar.

I nodded without hesitation. "I am. I want to be with that werewolf."

"The price is steep," the Goddess's light dimmed. "You must shed your scales, surrender your divine core—your very life force—and give up the protections of the sea."

"I'll do it."

"You will become more fragile than any human. High pressure, toxic fumes, extreme temperatures... a single one could be your end."

"As long as I can feel his warmth, nothing else matters."

My sisters wept around the altar, their eyes filled with tears.

"Marina, don't do this!" my eldest sister, Coral, pleaded. "Giving up your divinity for a land-dweller is not worth it!"

"He doesn't even know what you've done for him!" my second sister, Pearl, said angrily. "The mate bond between a wolf and a mermaid is unstable. You're gambling everything!"

"I don't care," I clenched my fists. "As long as I can be his fated mate, as long as I can forge that bond with him, I will give up anything."

The Moon Goddess sighed. "Silly child. Love has made you blind."

A holy light enveloped me. Searing pain tore through every nerve. My silver scales peeled away, one by agonizing one. My glowing blue core was ripped from my chest.

I screamed and convulsed in agony, but just before I lost consciousness, I saw Dominic reaching for me under the moonlight.

For him, it was all worth it.

When I woke up, I was a fragile "mortal."

But I could finally feel the real warmth of his embrace. I could use my weakened, enchanting song to clear his path on the battlefield.

I thought I had become his perfect Luna. That my sacrifice had paid off.

Now, he was twisting that sacrifice into 'proof' that I was indestructible. He called me a monster. I made myself weak for him, and he called it 'playing the victim.'

A bottomless rage clawed its way up from the depths of my shattered soul.

I will have my revenge! I will make them pay!

The immense rage exploded from me.

The vase on the office desk began to tremble.

I'll destroy this place! Destroy everything! Make them both pay!

I gathered every ounce of my fading essence and hurled it at the vase.

A flicker of movement. A whisper of displaced air.

The vase on the desk wobbled for a second, then stood still.

I collapsed in the empty air, realizing in despair that my soul was too weak to even knock over a vase.

"Strange," Harper murmured, looking around. "Was that a draft? I thought the windows were closed."

Dominic gasped, his hand flying to his chest. His face twisted.

The mate bond.

It was snapping.

His inner wolf was howling, feeling the agony of losing its mate.

But his mind still refused to accept reality.

"Dom, you look pale," Harper stood up, worried. "Should we go home and check on Marina?"

"Check on her?" Dominic sneered as he got up, but I noticed his legs were trembling. "Fine. Let's go see just how long she can keep up this act."

He was going home!

This was my last chance!

Let him see my body with his own eyes. Let him know what he's done!

Burning the last of my soul's energy, I lunged for the house's alarm system.

The piercing shriek of an alarm tore through the air.

Dominic's phone buzzed wildly, flashing a bright red alert:

TOXIC GAS DETECTED IN VILLA. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.

I saw his face change, his chest rising and falling faster.

But he quickly composed himself.

"See?" Dominic sneered, though his own face was pale. "She's even hacking the security systems now. Her little performance is getting more and more elaborate."

No! It's not an act, you fool! It's the stench of my rotting corpse!

"Dom, the system wouldn't go off for no reason," Harper said, faking concern. "Maybe we should really go back and look?"

"Of course we're going back," Dominic said, gathering his files, his eyes turning dangerous. "Harper, you're coming with me."

"Really?" Harper couldn't hide her excitement. "But... is that a good idea?"

"It's a great idea," Dominic scoffed. "I want you to see her little performance firsthand. I want you to see just how manipulative an outsider can be."

They were going back together.

They were going to see my body.

I screamed in his ear, a desperate, silent roar: Go on. Go see what you've done.

You're about to see her, Dominic.

The girl you left bleeding from her eyes and nose, her skin blistered raw by your "purification."

You're about to meet the corpse you created.

  • Burned Alive By The Alpha I Loved   Chapter 9

Dominic's POVI was a liar. I knew it from the very beginning.Ten years ago, when Marina appeared before me again as my mate, I felt the difference. The crushing aura of the deep was gone. The armor of diamond-hard scales had vanished. She had become soft, vulnerable. She would bleed from a small cut, just like a human. In my heart, I knew what she had given up for me.But I chose to pretend I didn't.Because admitting her sacrifice meant admitting I owed her a debt so immense, I could never hope to repay it.So I lied to myself. I told myself she was still that powerful monster from the deep. That way, I could enjoy her devotion without any of the guilt. When she used her song to help me conquer my rivals, I told myself it was her talent, not a sacrifice. When she struggled to adapt to life on land, I told myself she was just being fussy, not truly in pain. When she was so careful trying to please Harper, I told myself she was faking her kindness.I built a world of comforting lies w

"Dominic, it burns... my lungs are on fire... the smoke hurts my eyes..."My voice echoed in his mind, carrying all the pain of my death."Shut up!" Dominic clawed at his head, shaking it wildly. "You're not dead! This is another lie!""Do you know what I was thinking at the end?" my voice grew more shrill. "I wanted to tell you I was carrying your child...""No! It's not true!""But you didn't even give me a chance to speak..."Dominic began to cough violently, as if toxic smoke was filling his own lungs. The curse had taken effect."Cough... cough, cough..." he bent over in pain. "I... I can't breathe...""You killed me. And you killed our baby..." my voice began to fade.Dominic suddenly fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face."I... I didn't know... I really didn't know..."His voice was broken and desperate."Marina... I'm sorry... I thought it was a game... I thought you were indestructible... I thought..."The squad leader watched him coldly. "You know now? It's too lat

The light in the interrogation room was blinding.Dominic sat in a metal chair, handcuffed. His eyes were still wild, and he was muttering to himself."Where is Marina? Why isn't she here? Doesn't she want to see me humiliated like this?"Harper sat in another chair, pale and terrified. My soul floated in the corner of the room, feeling myself slowly fade away. The price of burning my soul for judgment was total annihilation. But I didn't regret it."Dominic, look who called us."The squad leader entered, followed by a familiar figure.Liam.He was holding an urn, his eyes filled with tears."Liam?" Dominic stared, shocked. "Are you crazy? You called the agents on me?""Alpha, the Luna is gone," Liam's voice was heavy with a grief you could feel. "I couldn't just leave her there. I had her body recovered... and cremated. She died in agony, Dominic.""Dead?" Dominic laughed hysterically. "Liam, she fooled you too! Marina isn't dead! She's in 'Shedding-Stasis'!""What 'Shedding-Stasis'?"

Watching them kiss, I finally understood.Dominic was beyond saving.Even if I had truly died right in front of him, he wouldn't have woken up.Even with my body turning to a rotting, stinking ruin, he had to believe I was "acting."He would rather believe the lies of a venomous woman than admit that he had killed me with his own hands.A month later, even more shocking news spread through the city."IT'S OFFICIAL! SILVER MOON'S ALPHA DOMINIC TO BOND WITH NEW MATE HARPER IN LAVISH CEREMONY THIS WEEKEND!"The bonding ceremony was held at the Moonlight Hotel, the most luxurious in the city.Crystal chandeliers glittered, champagne towers stood tall, and flowers decorated the entire hall.Guests wore lavish gowns and suits, their faces beaming with blessings. No one here knew the Alpha's true mate was now a rotting corpse, locked away in a forgotten room of his own house. My soul floated above the hall, watching the "perfect couple" on the stage.Harper wore a pure white gown, as beautifu

A week. My body rotted in that sealed room for a full week, and Dominic was still convinced this was nothing more than a battle of wills."Alpha, I really think we need to report this to the Supernatural Council."Liam pushed open the office door again, his face grim. "The Luna has been 'unconscious' for seven days. This isn't normal."Dominic didn't look up from his files, but I saw his hand was shaking."Liam, you're fired."What?Even Liam's eyes went wide with shock. "Alpha?""Pack your things and get out. Now," Dominic finally looked up, his eyes burning with a wild, feverish light. "I will not tolerate a subordinate who questions my authority.""Dominic, I'm just worried—""Out!"Liam gave him one last, long look, then silently gathered his things and left. The one person who actually cared if I lived or died, and he was cast out."Harper, you're my new Beta, effective immediately," Dominic announced to Harper, who was waiting in the corner.A flicker of triumph crossed Harper's

"Come on. Let's go see this 'monster's' performance for ourselves."Dominic strode toward the elevator, but I could see his clenched fists were trembling.Harper followed close behind, unconcealed excitement in her eyes.Liam hesitated, then followed, his face a mask of anxiety.Twenty minutes later, they stood outside the front door."Liam, you go in first," Dominic said, trying to sound casual. "Let's see what kind of show our little actress has prepared."My soul floated beside them, watching Liam cautiously take out his key.The moment the door creaked open, the cloying stench of decay hit them like a physical blow."Ugh—"Liam doubled over, gagging, stumbling back several steps as he covered his nose and mouth. It was the stench of three-day-old decay, mingled with the thick, acrid smoke of sage. The air was unbreathable."What's that smell?" Harper frowned, pinching her nose."Gods... it smells like something died in here," Liam choked out, his voice trembling.Dominic's face wen
