Dominic's POV

I was a liar. I knew it from the very beginning.

Ten years ago, when Marina appeared before me again as my mate, I felt the difference.

The crushing aura of the deep was gone. The armor of diamond-hard scales had vanished.

She had become soft, vulnerable. She would bleed from a small cut, just like a human.

In my heart, I knew what she had given up for me.

But I chose to pretend I didn't.

Because admitting her sacrifice meant admitting I owed her a debt so immense, I could never hope to repay it.

So I lied to myself. I told myself she was still that powerful monster from the deep.

That way, I could enjoy her devotion without any of the guilt.

When she struggled to adapt to life on land, I told myself she was just being fussy, not truly in pain.
