Chapter 2

Saltwater Fish
I stayed at the healing center for three months.

Caleb stayed with me for all three months. He tended to everything I needed, including meals, washing, and medicine.

The nurses whispered of his devotion, while the elders praised his sense of responsibility.

Amid Caleb's "devotion", the pup I lost was quietly forgotten by everyone.

On the day I could finally get out of bed, the room was filled with my favorite roses.

"Selina, you're doing better. There's a document I need you to sign."

Caleb wrapped his arms around me from behind, his chin brushing my shoulder. His voice was soft.

"They caught the culprit. He had a pup infected with wolfsbane, so he was desperate. That's why they used him.

"He's willing to accept punishment from the council and pay compensation. Once you sign the settlement, this matter ends here."

I lowered my head and said nothing.

In the silence, the door opened quietly.

Alison walked in.

She wore a white dress, her pregnant belly round and full beneath it.

"Selina, are you feeling better?"

I looked up, and the necklace with the Moon Goddess pendant around Alison's neck caught my eye.

Just days ago, it had rested quietly in my jewelry box.

Now, it was on her.

I pushed Caleb away.

"You said that the necklace is passed down through generations of Lunas. It was said to be blessed by the Moon Goddess to protect a mother during childbirth.

"Now that I don't have a pup, you think I don't need it anymore, is that it?"

Caleb froze, guilt flashing across his eyes.

Alison hurriedly took off the necklace and tried to put it into my hands.

"I'm sorry, Selina. I didn't know."

I didn't take it.

The necklace slipped from my palm, hitting the floor with a heavy, dull thud.

"That's not what I meant, Selina. I just think that no matter what happens, we should move forward. We can still have a second pup."

"Alison is about to give birth," Caleb added after a pause. "I'll have the nursery prepared for her and her pup."

I snapped my head up.

The nursery.

The room that I had started preparing the very second I found out I was pregnant.

On the wall was my own painting of a moonlit forest and him, the "invincible Alpha father".

In the cabinet were tiny robes I stitched by hand, with the sleeves redone three times before they finally sat right.

Now, he was going to hand it all over to Alison.

Sensing my silence, Caleb added, "I promise, when our second pup is born, I'll prepare an even more beautiful room."

"What if I don't agree?"

He froze for a moment, his eyebrows knitting together.

"Selina. Don't make a fuss."

"A fuss?"

My voice sharpened. "Our pup has been gone for only three months, and you want me to forgive the one responsible for his death, and give everything that was mine to Alison? Caleb, you don't deserve to be a father!"

My voice rose as I lifted my hand to strike him.

But Alison suddenly rushed forward, stepping in front of him.

My smack landed squarely on her face, and her pale cheek flushed instantly, swelling beneath the blow.

The vivid red mark on her face and the tears pooling in her eyes made her look heartbreakingly fragile.

"Selina! You're being completely unreasonable!" Caleb roared.

Alison collapsed into his arms, seizing the moment to say, "I'm sorry, Selina… This is all my fault. You should hit me and blame me. It's only right…"

My whole body trembled with rage.

Caleb, however, only cast me a cold glance.

"Selina, you need to calm down."

Just like that, I was taken to the nursery.

Werewolves moved in and out. The room I once knew was already half dismantled.

I tried to step forward and to stop them, but Caleb grabbed my wrist.

"Selina… you have to face the darkness if you want to move past it."

Caleb's hand was warm, but all I felt was coldness that seeped deep into my bones.

I watched as they took the tiny clothes out of the cabinet one by one, folding them carefully and placing them into boxes.

The little robe, the one with the sleeves I had redone three times, was at the very bottom.

They covered the mural with white cloth, saying it would be repainted.

As such, the moonlit forest vanished behind it.

At that moment, I finally understood that the instant Caleb made his choice, it wasn't just our pup that died. The mate who once loved me with everything he had had already become someone else's support.

My eyes burned, and tears slipped down before I could stop them.

"Caleb, I hate you."

His entire body stiffened.

Then, almost instinctively, he pulled me tightly into his arms.

"I'm sorry."

In the next instant, the Beta, Marcus Knight's voice rang out in sudden panic.

"Alpha Caleb! Alison tried to take her own life!"

Alison's face drained of color. She shook her head frantically and scrambled to grab Caleb's leg, sobbing."Caleb, I was wrong! I loved you too much! I was afraid of losing you!"But Caleb recoiled as if she were something filthy. His eyes no longer held any trace of compassion. There was only pure disgust."Love?" His voice was low and hollow. "You killed my brother. You killed Selina's pup and destroyed her life. Now you dare speak of love?"Alison collapsed to the ground.I watched it unfold, a slow, sweet satisfaction finally rising in me. But it wasn't her humiliation that thrilled me but Caleb's.The wolf who had once left me writhing in despair on the operating table, in the healing center, and in fire, was now finally witnessing his own folly in front of everyone.Caleb turned to me, his eyes dark with endless regret and torment. His throat was tight, and his voice trembled as he said to me, "Selina, I know I have no right to ask for your forgiveness. The Nox pack's Winter Feast was grander than before. When I walked into the banquet hall, arm in arm with Damien, the entire room fell silent.Every pair of eyes turned toward me. There was shock, disbelief, confusion, and astonishment. Someone's hand trembled so much that the wine glass slipped and shattered on the floor, the crash deafening in the sudden stillness.I caught sight of Caleb near the dais. He jerked his head up like he'd been struck by lightning as he stared at me while frozen in place. He had lost a lot of weight, and there were dark circles under his eyes that made his once-sharp features look worn and haggard. Those eyes of his, the ones that had made my heart race countless times, now fixed on me as if afraid I might vanish the moment he blinked."Selina…" he croaked, stepping forward instinctively. But before he could reach me, Damien's hand held me firmly around my waist, and his gaze swept over Caleb. His gaze was calm, almost casual, but his Alpha au

Selina's Point-of-ViewThe snow in Baraphia was colder than I had imagined.I stood atop the platform of the Gelid pack's stronghold, watching the wind sweep the distant snow and pulling my cloak tighter around me.The cloak was thick, carrying a chill as crisp as cedar and as sharp as a blade grazing ice.It was Damien White's scent.Three months ago, when I had climbed out of the old drainage tunnels of the healing center, I almost thought I wouldn't survive. But just outside the woods, a black SUV had been waiting in the snowy night. When the door opened, Damien stood there in the wind and snow, his gray eyes colder than moonlight."Come with me," he said. "Die here, or live and come to Baraphia with me."And so, I came to Baraphia."The wind is strong."A low voice came from behind me. In the next moment, a warm, strong hand pressed against the edge of my cloak.Damien stood beside me and helped me secure it.He was taller than me by far, his posture like an unyielding

The truth was far darker than I imagined.Three days later, Marcus brought in a rogue wolf. His name was Lucas Young, and he was the biggest middleman in Sisyphia's black market.I bound him to the interrogation post with silver chains piercing through his shoulders, preventing him from shifting into a wolf.Even so, when he saw me, a twisted smile appeared on his face."The Nox pack's Alpha, huh?" He coughed up blood before adding, "So you've finally decided to investigate?"I stepped closer, gripping his chin hard."What really happened during the car accident?"Lucas laughed, the scent of blood on his breath."Didn't you already know? That constantly crying widow of your brother's… She sure is generous with her money."My hand tightened."Explain that to me.""She gave me a Sisyphia pass, 200,000 gold coins, and a smuggling route," Lucas wheezed, his eyes gleaming with malice. "She said that as long as I kill your Luna and keep that pup in her womb safe, she would secu

Three days after Selina's death, I returned to the main house. But I didn't enter our bedroom. Her scent lingered everywhere. Those unfinished books on the nightstand. Her favorite white shawl in the closet. The roses by the window she had tended during her pregnancy.Every single thing reminded me that I had driven the she-wolf who had once stood alive before me to die in the fire.I couldn't sleep all night. The moment I closed my eyes, I saw that charred hand in the ruins with the ring fused into burnt flesh.I began re-investigating the car accident three months ago.Everyone had told me the rogue wolf had been manipulated while trying to save his pup, and that had caused the collision with the escort convoy. But I no longer believed it.Selina wouldn't have signed the settlement just before her death for no reason. She had to have known something. But when I went to personally interrogate that rogue wolf, he was already dead.I summoned all the guards who had escort

Caleb's Point-of-ViewWhen I heard the words "She's dead", my ears rang, and everything in front of me felt suddenly unreal.Alison was still sitting on the bed with her wrist wrapped in white gauze. Her lips were slightly parted, as if she was shocked by the news too.But I didn't have time to care about her.I sprang to my feet. "Say that again."Marcus' face had drained of color. His voice was trembling as he repeated, "The fire was too intense, so the entire building collapsed. The fire department found a female corpse in the debris with her left hand wearing a ring, and the aura around her was unmistakably a Luna's. The initial analysis confirms it's Selina.""Impossible."I bolted from the room. Wind swept in from the corridor, chilling me completely. My wolf roared in my mind, sharp and furious. I was so panicked that I nearly went out of control.Half an hour later, I arrived at the scene. The entire building had been reduced to a blackened state. As the smoke and ste
