Adrian’s Pov

“Strange choice of words, don't you think, Leighton. You can't just meet a woman for the first time and claim her as your wife,” Damien says, trying to sound logical.

“Stay out of this, Blackwood. This is between my wife and me. I know what I'm talking about,” I snap at him.

“It’s clear you're mistaken. Aria has worked for me for years and she has only just come to the country. How can she be your wife?” He then turns to Aria and asks “Or do you know this man, Aria?”

I watch her closely, waiting for her to spill the truth. She stands there stiff but what she says next feels like a bucket of cold water pouring over my body.

“I’ve never met him before. Excuse me,” she says with her head down as she moves towards the door.

The lies burn me more than the whiskey I've been drinking. I try to follow her but Damien blocks me. “Stay away from her, Leighton.”

“I’ll advise you to step out of my way and mind your business,” I say, moving closer to his face.

Aria’s (Zara’s)I decide to take Lila out to the playground on Sunday. After my confrontation with Adrian on Friday, we spent the entire Saturday indoors just bonding and relaxing. On Sunday, she begs me to take her to the park to play. I can't even say no to her. I won't lock her up because I'm trying to hide her from her father. Running away crossed my mind last night but that wouldn't be fair to her. I can't keep disrupting her life and love in fear forever.I will stay here and raise my daughter. Adrian can go to hell. The sun shines bright in the park and laughter from children fills the air. You can hear their squealing and giggling as they run around. My Lila is coloring rainbows on the sidewalk with chalk while humming a song I don't even know. Her hair is scattered and I can see the chalk on her face and arms. She's so attentive to her drawing without a care in the world.I sit on the bench, acting like I'm reading something on my phone but I'm secretly checking out our surr

  • Burned By His Lies   Chapter 13: Broken Peace

Aria’s (Zara’s) povHis head snaps to look at me so fast that I think it will fall off. “What?” he asks, confusion written all over his face. “What did you just say?”“I said she’s not yours Adrian. She’s my daughter. And mine alone,” I say pointing to my chest fiercely.“If she isn’t mine then who’s her father?” He asks while folding his arms and raising his brows.“I don’t think that’s any of your business,” I spit at him.“Is it not? You reappear years later with a child the same age as ours would have been at this time and you claim she’s not mine?”“Remember I had an abortion right?” I try to refresh his memory with the lie hoping he’ll believe it but he only smiles. It’s taunting. Like I’m making a fool of myself.“Yeah. If I remember the fake abortion. The one you paid the doctor to write for you I do,” he says as he circles me.My body jolts like it has been hit by a car. How is that possible? I made sure to cover my tracks very well. Only the doctor and I knew that informati

  • Burned By His Lies   Chapter 12: Confrontation

Aria’s Zara povI haven't heard anything from Adrian ever since the gala but that doesn't mean I've brought down my walls. I can't continue living life like before. Especially after what my daughter told me. It could have been anyone but my guess tells me it was Adrian investigating my appearance. I had to drop by Lila’s school and insist that they shouldn't send her home with anybody apart from me or the nanny. If anyone else tried to pick her up from school, I should be notified immediately. That didn't stop me from constantly looking over my shoulder. He's been quiet ever since our encounter so I try to enjoy the peace I have before the storm rolls in because I'm sure it will. He will dig until he finds my hidden truth. The peace doesn’t last longer than that because Friday afternoon, an hour before I close, my office phone rings and I pick it up.“Good afternoon Miss Sterling, there’s a Mr Leighton here to see you,” her voice sounds through the phone. My heart stops then starts

  • Burned By His Lies   Chapter 8: Truth and Hurt

Adrian's povIt seems like my heartbeat is in a competition with the music in the club. Nothing could pull my attention from Corbett. Not the drunk people, flirty girls, or the alcohol being passed around. My whiskey lay forgotten on the table and I could see the glass sweating. Mark sits across from me, his attention on a girl who is seriously flirting with him. They are all smiles and I can't help but feel a little envious. His life is so free and simple. Nothing like my troubled own.Corbett had just said one word but my entire world is spinning. The moment I saw his name, I knew it was something good.“You were right, Leighton.”I make out that statement despite the noise. I quickly stand up from the chair and leave the VIP area. Mark gives me a questioning look but I don't stay back to answer him. I make my way through people until I find myself outside, in a quiet alley.“Spill, this call better be worth it, man.” I can hear him typing fast and shuffling papers on the other sid

  • Burned By His Lies   Chapter 10: The Photos

Adrian’s PovThe days drag on painfully slowly and I don't get anything from Corbett. Anxiety fills my day while worry occupies my night. I am unable to sleep at night or even focus at the office because I keep seeing her face. I see it when I close my eyes or see her in other people. I don't believe in ghosts but is there a possibility that I am being haunted by her ghost? But ghosts don't wear perfume or feel soft under your fingers but she did.“Maybe I'm finally losing my mind. Maybe grief and heartbreak finally ate up the last of my sanity,” I whisper as I lie awake in my dark room. I can barely recognize myself since the gala. But I think back to what she said before entering the car and it feels like a spark to ignite the fire within me“It was always over.”I smile at the slip-up. It could mean anything I know what she is referring to. “I’ll find out who you really are, Zara or Aria. Whoever you are.”I show up at the office the next day on Sunday because we have some project

  • Burned By His Lies   Chapter 9: After Her Lie

Aria’s PovI just told the biggest lie ever known. I can't believe I looked the man I used to love in the eye and denied myself. Do I feel bad? Yes. Do I want to take it back? No. I believe it's good for us. We should continue with our different lives. His look after I told him it was over was calculated. I know that look. I saw it every time he took me to bed or when we got into an argument. He hadn't changed. My heart couldn't keep calm until I reached my house. It felt like my body was breaking like glass. As soon as I entered my apartment and closed the door, I let myself fall to the floor.I was breathing hard and I felt weak. Could he really tell I was lying? From the way he looked at me, I sensed he would do everything to prove he was right. I had to be attentive. But I really pray he believed me. That he left second-guessing himself. That he'll just go home, drink whiskey, sleep, and forget about it. He should just bury the thought under a rock. But I know better than to thi
