ZANE

My head jerked toward the bedroom door, every muscle in my back tightening.

The footsteps were getting faster, pounding up the stairs two at a time.

It wasn't Silas. My father had never run anywhere in his life.

Fuck. Marcus.

"Zane," Veda choked out against my neck, her voice shaking.

Her legs were still locked around my waist. I pulled out of her quickly, my hands tightening around her hips. A sharp gasp tore out of her throat as the cold air hit her skin.

Her feet hit the floor, but her

VEDAThe second that door clicked shut, my whole body went still.I didn't move. I didn't even breathe. I just lay there under the heavy comforter, staring at the thin line of yellow hallway light that had flashed across the ceiling before disappearing into the dark.It had been the guard. Just the guard cracking the door open for three seconds to make sure I was in bed before Silas walked up the stairs.Outside, heavy shoes paced back and forth—slow, steady thuds against the wood.Silas.He was out there, talking in low, clipped murmurs to the guard.Every muscle in my body was locked so tight it hurt.Under the sheets, my bare thighs were sticky, Zane's come cooling against my skin, slick and heavy. The smell of cedar, rain, and sex clung to the mattress, impossible to hide and explain away.If Silas opened that door right now, one breath would give me away. He'd smell what happened before he even reached the foot of the bed.I don't know how long I lay there.Down the hall, a door

I pulled out of her quickly, my hands tightening around her hips. A sharp gasp tore out of her throat as the cold air hit her skin. Her feet hit the floor, but her knees buckled immediately. I caught her under the arms before she could fall and held her against the dresser.Out in the hall, Marcus's voice cut through the silence, low and fast.“Get up,” Marcus snapped at the guard in the hallway. “Silas just came through the main gate. He’s driving up the driveway right now.”The guard’s boots hit the floor with a heavy thud. His wooden chair scraped across the rug.“He wasn't supposed to be back until eight,” the guard muttered through the door.“Well, he

VEDAHis lips were still cold from the rain, but inside, his mouth burned hot. He kissed me like he was trying to prove a point, tasting like coffee and tobacco and the storm outside, and it knocked the air clean out of my lungs. My fingers dug into the damp curls at the back of his neck, pulling him down harder.Whatever calm I'd been holding onto five minutes ago was gone. His thigh pushed between mine, forcing my legs apart under the blanket until the hard length of him pressed against me through his wet pants.Out in the hall, the wooden chair scraped against the floor.Zane went still. His mouth stayed on mine, but his whole body turned rigid.Neither of us moved. Neither of us breathed. I could feel his heart slamming against my chest, fast and hard, matching mine beat for beat.Through the door, the guard shifted, cleared his throat, and coughed once. Then the chair creaked as he settled back.Silence returned, but Zane didn't stay on the bed.He pulled back from the kiss, brea

VEDAI lay on my back, staring at the ceiling.Silas had come back at eight that morning with the square amber bottle and plastic syringe. Then he'd returned at six that evening. Both times, he'd held my jaw, forced the liquid down my throat, and watched until I swallowed. The strange thing was, my body didn't feel heavy anymore. The awful, sour nausea that used to twist my stomach after those chalky pills was gone. My head was clear, the bitter iron taste had disappeared from my tongue, and the dizziness that used to hit me whenever I stood up hadn't returned.I felt steady. Stronger than I had in weeks. Then a thought came to me, one I didn't want. What if Zane was wrong? What if Silas wasn't trying to harm me? What if he was only trying to fix what he saw as a broken investment so I'd look healthy standing beside him at the next press conference?Outside in the hallway, leather creaked. The night guard shifted in the wooden chair outside my door, and a low radio murmur broke throug

VEDAThe heavy antique chair scraped across the floor in the hallway. My back went stiff against the pillows.A metal key slid into the deadbolt with a sharp grind, and the heavy lock slammed into the frame with a thud that shook the headboard. The door opened.Silas walked in first. In his left hand was a square, dark amber bottle and a clear plastic syringe with black measurement lines taped to its neck.Rosa followed behind him.She carried a small silver tray with an empty crystal glass and a pitcher of cold water. Her head was lowered, and her trembling fingers twisted the edge of her apron. The glass kept clinking against the pitcher. The guard stayed in the hallway, his combat boots planted in the doorway as he watched through the open door.Silas walked straight to the nightstand, placed the amber bottle on it with a heavy thud, and tore the syringe away from the glass. My mouth went dry. My hands tightened into fists beneath the blanket."What is that?" My voice came out thin

ZANE It was getting dark, and the main house was colder than outside. The maids stayed close to the walls with their eyes down. Silas's four new men worked in pairs, stiff black jackets and heavy utility belts, changing positions every hour. My left hand was deep inside the pocket of my pants, throbbing hard. The electrical tape around my thumbnail had turned gray and sticky at the edges, clinging to the raw skin underneath. I'd tried washing the dirt off my face in the downstairs bathroom an hour ago. The dark circles under my eyes looked like someone had carved them out with a dull knife. I turned the corner near the entrance to the guest library, heading for the side doors. The tall walnut door swung open and Amelia stepped straight into my path. A thick cream cardigan was pulled tight around her ribs, her hair tied in a messy knot like she'd been running her fingers through it for hours. She stood in the middle of the Persian rug, her small boots planted firmly on the floor
