Chapter 1

I had just gotten home from work when my phone buzzed with a video call from Grandpa, which I answered right away.

But Grandpa didn't appear on the screen. Instead, it was the angry, flushed face of Peggy Mitchell, one of the residents at the village Grandpa lived in, that showed up. A crowd of other villagers had gathered behind her.

"Fred Sherman! Look at the mess you made!" Madam Mitchell screamed into the phone, her spit splattering onto the lens.

"The water from the village well stinks! All we're pumping out now is muddy water! Everyone who's been drinking the water got diarrhea, and now, the whole village is here! You must've cut corners and pocketed the kickbacks when you handled this project.

"But now that the pipes are destroyed, the water's contaminated, and the entire village is in chaos, you happily hide away in the city to enjoy your riches? You'd better get your ass here now and put up the money to dig us a new well!"

All the way in the back, Grandpa was being shoved around, and he had to press himself against the wall in the corner.

The other villagers started chiming in as well.

"That's right! Make him come back to the village and dig us another well!"

"He conned his own neighbors out of their money! How shameless of him!"

I was completely dumbfounded. My mind went blank.

I was an orphan. After my parents died, Grandpa took me in. He relied on scavenging recyclables and bartering with the neighbors to keep me fed and clothed until I was all grown up.

After I'd finally established myself in the city, I wanted him to move in with me so he could enjoy a comfortable life. But he insisted on staying in the village, claiming he wasn't used to city life.

As for the well, I'd specifically hired a construction crew from Sunshire, the state capital, to set it up in our village, Hopeville, three years ago. I also paid to install a water pump and lay pipes that ran directly into every house.

The entire village got to use the water infrastructure for free.

To ensure Grandpa could live comfortably in the village, I did everything in my power to win over the rest of the villagers. I also paid to build a senior activity center for them. During the festive season, I hauled truckloads of groceries back to the village and gave them out door-to-door.

I always assumed that no one was made of stone. If I respected the villagers as my elders and treated them well, surely they would return my sincerity with kindness of their own.

"Madam Mitchell, the water from the well got contaminated because of the heavy rains. It has nothing to do with the quality of the construction." I did my best to restrain my anger and explain the situation to her.

"Don't give me that nonsense!" Madam Mitchell refused to listen to me. "Don't take us for fools just because we're from the countryside! You must've used lousy pipes! If you don't get back here today, dig a new well, and make this right…"

She whipped her head around and jabbed a finger at Grandpa. "Then that old bastard of a grandpa of yours can forget about having a moment of peace in this village! We'll come over and cause a scene every day. I can't wait to see how long he can stay alive under such circumstances!"

The call cut off abruptly, and when I called back, the phone had been turned off.

I didn't even change out of my pajamas before grabbing my keys and shooting out the door. I drove as fast as I could. All I could think of was the sight of Grandpa, cowering and trembling against the wall.

I never should've been kind. I should've known that some people didn't deserve an ounce of generosity.

When Madam Mitchell saw Grandpa, she treated him like her lifeline."Moses! Moses, please! You have to help me persuade Fred. We've been neighbors for decades!"My heart clenched. I was afraid Grandpa would feel bad for them. I turned around to push him back into his room."Grandpa, it's cold outside. Don't worry about this. I'll handle it."But Grandpa waved his hand, signaling me to move aside. I didn't see any pity in his eyes, only indifference and contempt."Peggy, did it occur to you that we were neighbors when you brought a crowd to besiege my house and accuse my grandson of being mean-spirited and heartless? What about when you threw bricks at my windows or killed my chickens? Did it occur to you then?"Madam Mitchell's crying abruptly faltered."Freddy worked hard to earn his money. Every single cent represents the long hours and laborious effort he put in. He doesn't owe you guys anything!"Grandpa took a deep breath. His voice was firm and resolute. "Freddy, close th

Ms. Nelson and Madam Mitchell exchanged a glance. Madam Mitchell swallowed hard before finally gathering the courage to speak."Fred... a-about what we did before, we behaved very foolishly. We let greed cloud our judgment. We shouldn't have let other people stir us up into confronting you. We shouldn't have smashed your grandpa's windows…"Please, be the bigger person and don't hold it against ignorant country folks like us."As she spoke, she pushed the basket of eggs forward."These are from our own hens. They're free-range eggs. Give them to your grandpa. It'll be good for his health."I looked at the basket of eggs. All it did was remind me of the two chickens they killed six months ago."Take them away," I said icily. "My grandpa doesn't need your filthy eggs."Madam Mitchell's hands froze in midair. She didn't know whether to pull back or not. Ms. Nelson hastily chimed in to ease the tension."It's just a small gesture from us, your old neighbors, Fred. Actually, the mai

After a brief flash of confusion, I figured out why that happened. The geology around Hopeville was fairly unusual. Freshwater ran through the shallow layers of the ground, but brackish water lay deeper underground.Part of the reason it cost me over 80,000 dollars to set up the first well was that I'd hired an expert surveying team to identify a suitable underground water source. The team had to run multiple tests and install several layers of filtration systems before we managed to bring up fresh, clean water. But the villagers had tried to save money and dug blindly into the ground, so they had broken straight through into the layer filled with brackish water."The water was nowhere near fit for human consumption!" Gemma continued to fill me in. "The water quality was seriously beyond acceptable standards. It was bitter and unpleasant. When they boiled it, a thick layer of white mineral scale formed at the bottom of the kettle."People got diarrhea from drinking it. Even the vi

At that moment, I got a call from Ms. Nelson, too. I put it on speaker mode."Fred Sherman! Have you lost your mind? You brought people to fill in the well, and you're even destroying the senior activity center and taking everything away! What you're destroying is village property. I'm going to report you to the police!"Her angry shouting didn't make me flinch at all. I felt nothing but amusement. "Go right ahead and report me, Ms. Nelson." My voice was calm. "I paid to set up that well. I donated all of the funds to build the senior activity center. All of the contracts and invoices are still with me."Oh, as for the 2,400 dollars the villagers coughed up back then, I transferred a total of 3,000 dollars back to you guys to divvy up among yourselves. I even gave extra for interest. So now, everything I'm taking and destroying is my private property. I can do whatever I want with them."For a moment, Ms. Nelson couldn't speak. I soon heard the sound of her ragged breathing over

Grandpa pulled through. The doctor said he suffered from acute myocardial ischemia. After taking off his mask, the doctor sighed."If you had brought him in ten minutes later, he would've been beyond saving."The doctor's words stabbed me in the heart like a dagger. I spent the entire night sitting beside Grandpa's hospital bed. I stared at his ashen face. I listened to the heart monitor beeping away.It felt like I'd plunged into an icy abyss, and my heart turned into a block of ice. I no longer felt even the slightest lingering attachment to Hopeville. After heading into the stairwell at the end of the hallway, I lit a cigarette. It'd been ages since I last smoked one, but right now, I needed the nicotine to soothe my nerves and suppress my urge to commit murder.I pulled out my phone and made a call."Hey, Jocelyn."I'd called Jocelyn Hill, a construction crew supervisor that my company often dealt with."Hey, Fred. It's pretty early. Do you have an urgent job for us?" she a

I turned around and took Grandpa's cold hand. "Grandpa, get in the car."I reached for the passenger door to help him into the seat, but as my hand touched the door handle, Madam Mitchell pressed against it and held it shut."Trying to leave, huh? That's not happening!" She glared at me, her murky eyes bloodshot. "Since you refuse to fix the well or help the village anymore, fine! Give us back the money we gave you back then!"Freezing, I stared at her in disbelief. "The 20 dollars?""That's right! Give us back our 20 dollars!" Madam Mitchell demanded indignantly. "Now that the well is ruined and can't be used, you have to return our money!"The crowd erupted again."She's right! Give us our money back!""That's our hard-earned money! Why should we let it go down the drain?""Don't even think about driving out of here until you give us our money!""Smash his car!"They all shouted at the top of their lungs, flailing their fists as they moved closer. Dozens of flashlight beams
