Chapter 3

Author: Tangle H
Back downstairs, the butler Mr. Reed handed me a wine list for the evening banquet and told me to finish the cellar inventory by midnight.

Inventory. That was it.

How hard could it be?

An hour later, staring at wall-to-wall bottles, my eyelids were staging a full rebellion.

Not my fault.

Nobody told me inventory could be this complicated!

I also had to cross-check batch numbers, case numbers, and receiving logs.

The Bennett family cellar had someone dedicated to managing it. I had never needed to count a single bottle.

I studied a label and solemnly entered into the spreadsheet: one thousand nine hundred eighty-nine bottles.

Perfect.

I was just a little thirsty from all the work.

I glanced around, then poured myself a little under half a glass from one of the opened samples awaiting inspection.

Gulp.

The moment I swallowed, footsteps in leather shoes came to a stop behind me.

Every hair on the back of my neck stood up.

A cold, oppressive presence loomed behind me.

"Lia Bennett."

A dark voice came from above me.

I flinched hard.

I turned my head stiffly.

Cassian.

The man was like a ghost! He was everywhere I turned.

I fought to keep my eyes open and looked at him.

Damn his good looks!

He wore a black shirt with one button undone at the collar, revealing a sliver of pale skin.

Those deep-set eyes narrowed, and his gaze slid down to the wine glass in my hand.

"Stealing. Is that a family tradition?"

I set the glass down immediately.

"I... I was just checking if the wine had gone bad."

Cassian said nothing.

He picked up the laptop and scanned the spreadsheet, his eyes sweeping down a few rows.

"Drinking isn't forbidden on this estate."

He tapped the spreadsheet with one knuckle, his voice cold.

"But from row three onward, you entered everything under the wrong headers. The vintages went in the quantity column, the batch numbers went in the case-number column, and you counted two transfer records twice."

I shot back stubbornly, "The column headers were badly designed..."

Cassian's eyes narrowed.

I immediately corrected myself. "I'll redo it right away."

His gaze traced a path from my face down my neck to the ends of my hair.

The faint scent of perfume hovered between us.

Cassian's breath hitched for a beat.

I instinctively tugged my skirt hem lower, terrified he would accuse me of trying to seduce him again.

A pleasant tingle ran through me at the sound of his voice. "Lia Bennett, tell me, what do high-society girls usually like?"

I was caught off guard. "Jewelry, designer gowns, handbags... things like that?"

Cassian let out an unexpected, quiet laugh.

"I don't think she'd go for those."

"What I meant was, how do you get a woman with a terrible temper to forgive you?"

I raised an eyebrow.

Internally, I seethed.

How dare he say Mistress had a terrible temper?!

"Easy. Just be obedient enough."

"Whatever she tells you to do, you do it."

"She tells you to kneel, you kneel. You don't lift your head until she gives you permission."

"That's the attitude a man should have when he's trying to apologize."

Cassian stared at me. His Adam's apple dipped.

"Noted."

"Now, get back to the inventory. I want the revised list by midnight."

"One more mistake, and tomorrow you'll be picking up a scrub brush from the utility room and scrubbing every inch of this cellar floor."

Damn him!

That damned Mafia Don!!!

One month later. The Bennett Foundation's charity gala was held once again at the Vitale Family's vineyard. My father used his investment returns to restart the collapsed project. The first grant went, once again, to the same school for troubled teens from two years ago. This time, every account belonging to the school, the partner organization, and the foundation was overseen from start to finish by an independent audit team. And I had finally returned to the life I was meant to have as Miss Bennett. The stylist curled my hair. The maid helped me into a custom-made red dress and black stockings. My father personally opened the jewelry box and selected a pair of ruby earrings that suited me best. Before we left, he handed me the guest list."Sweetheart, would you like to check it over yourself?"I read three lines and my head started to throb."No.""Why isn't this handled by a professional secretary?"My father blinked, then immediately took the list back."Right.""My daughter doesn'

Messages from seventeen unfamiliar accounts bombarded my phone.[Mistress, look outside your window!]Outside, Cassian Vitale stood in the rain.No bodyguards. No driver. No gun at his waist.Even the Don's ring that never left his hand was gone.He stood there in a rain-soaked black shirt, wearing the black leather collar I'd once ordered him to put on.Tied to the collar was an oversized pink bow. When the wind blew, two pink ribbons fluttered against his sharp jawline in a picture of utter misery.More absurd still, behind him sat a package nearly half his height.A pink ribbon, tied in a bow.To say it clashed with the Don of the East Coast's image would be an understatement. It looked like something one of his enemies had gift-wrapped specifically to humiliate him. When Cassian saw me open the curtain, he immediately stepped back.He didn't come closer. He simply lowered his head and took out his phone.A moment later, my screen lit up.[Mistress, there are mosquitoes out here.][

After the vineyard incident, I took an entire month's leave from the estate. That same evening, a friend suddenly texted me."Lia!""Turn on the news!"A face I thought I'd never see again appeared on the TV screen. My father, Daniel Bennett, stood in a conference hall on the West Coast. He had lost a lot of weight.Behind him stood lawyers and independent auditors, with a full row of bank statements and investment documents on display."I never misappropriated the charitable project funds."I bolted upright. My father explained that the real problem was the partner organization behind the school. He had trusted them, using his personal assets and the Bennett family's holdings as collateral. The collateral covered the fifty million dollars the Vitale Family had invested in the project. When the project collapsed, the partner had already secretly transferred its assets. My father hadn't run off with the money. He had taken his last unfrozen personal funds to the West Coast to close a me

By now, how could I not understand? In front of the convoy, the moment I sent a message, he had turned and looked straight at me.The last-minute staff outing.A table full of dishes only puppy and I would have known about. Then there was the contact name on his phone: my real name, saved there long ago.Cassian had known all along. He had known from the start that the woman who owed him fifty million dollars and bumbled through maid work at his estate was the same Mistress who had bossed him around like a puppy online for two years.Only me.Like an idiot, I had thought my disguise was airtight.By day, the Don punished me by making me redo the wine cellar inventory.By night, I ordered my puppy to put on a collar and kneel.By day, the Don warned me not to even think about seducing him.I turned right around and tattled to puppy, ranting about how my creditor was violent and cruel. And he had the audacity to defend himself with a straight face! The more I thought about it, the angrie

Halfway through the meal, heat flooded my body.Oh... I forgot. Alcohol always made my body hypersensitive.Being a wine connoisseur didn't mean I could hold my liquor. After all those delicious bites, my cheeks were already burning.I yanked at my uniform collar in irritation and squinted around the table, searching for water.Nothing.I'd finished the lemon soda ages ago.Instinctively, I turned to look at Cassian beside me.He hadn't touched much of the food since it arrived. He didn't seem to be doing too well either.A flush showed through his skin, reaching even the side of his neck.I knew why.Served him right. That was what he got for insisting on sitting next to me.My gaze fell on the glass near his hand.Clear liquid.Ice cubes.Water! While his eyes were closed and he was massaging the bridge of his nose, I snatched the glass and gulped down most of it.The next second, my eyes flew wide open.I erupted into a coughing fit!A hand shot over immediately and took the glass a

The convoy arrived at the Vitale Family's countryside vineyard.A group of guards stood in front of the menu board in the courtyard, collectively lost for words."Barolo braised beef cheek, Marsala mushroom ragout, vodka cream pasta...""Why does even the baked apple pie have a bourbon glaze?""We've got armed patrols this afternoon. Is the boss trying to get everyone drunk first?"Another guard pointed at the dessert section."Rum baba, marsala tiramisu, cherry brandy tart.""Great. He didn't even spare the desserts.""What's gotten into the boss lately?"Someone leaned in and whispered conspiratorially,"He's in love, obviously.""Last time, after we handled that shipment at the docks, I saw the boss staring at his phone and grinning like an idiot.""Grinning so wide I could see his back teeth. For a full three minutes."Everyone looked horrified at once."Are you sure he wasn't reading somebody's hit list?"Cassian gave them one cold look. The guards snapped to attention."The grape
