Hector knocked on the door and waited patiently.

The door opened, and one of the maids appeared in the opening. Her eyebrows rose at seeing all these men on the doorstep.

"How can I help?" she asked. Her voice tremored.

The bottom of her skirt was wet, and in her hands, she was holding a wet cloth that she was mopping the living room floor with when the door knocked, and she went to open it.

"I want to speak to Lord Malcolm." Hector answered. "Can you call him?"

The maid swallowed hard, clutching the wet garment in her hands. She looked behind her anxiously, but there was no one to be seen.

"Um… I- I'm not sure if he's here," she responded.

Hector looked at her and narrowed his eyes. What did she mean she was not sure? Was she trying to cover for him?

“How come you're not sure if he's here or not? Are you covering for him?" he asked bluntly, leaning darkly toward her.

The maid took a step back, and her face paled. Her breaths became rapid.

"Come on, Hector, stop it, you're scaring her

The door slammed, drawing the attention of the men who, up until that moment, were commenting on everything that had happened in the castle, while at the same time, they were busy tending to the horses. All eyes were on her, and Skye wasn't used to that. She had never wished to attract attention, especially from men. And now six heads had turned to look at her, freezing her in place. She looked at them, forcing herself to smile. Hector's heart slammed at the sight of her and he felt his legs melting. Oh my God! That flush that crept across her cheeks, made his heart bloom like a rose, as her cheeks had bloomed now. An irresistible force drove him across the stone path that led to the door of the house and near to her. Approaching her, he placed his hands behind his back and held them tightly, fighting the urge to reach for her. Skye watched him come towards her. His eyes never left hers, not for a moment, and Skye couldn't take hers from his, it was as if a magnetic force had lock

The sun had risen in all its shape and brightness. The women in the house were already awake, and Talisha was helping Delma prepare breakfast for everyone.Skye was sitting at the table with a mug of hot tea in front of her.She couldn't drink it hot, so she braided her hair until it cooled down a bit. She had parted her hair in the middle and brought it to the front right and left of her head, using a small old hand mirror attached to a wooden box. She had watched Maysie make them so many times that she had learned how to do it herself."They are very beautiful," Maysie told her when Skye had finished, and she had taken the mirror to look at them closely, turning her head a little to the side right and left. She turned her eyes to her. "I had a good teacher," she replied, and Maysie laughed."Breakfast is almost ready," Delma announced. “I need one last ingredient. Skye?” addressed to her."Can you please go to the herb garden and get me marjoram and mint?"Skye looked at her. "Do yo

Delma walked to the end of the path and looked around to see if the men had returned, but no one was there. She continued to the apple orchard, wondering what her next move would be. She couldn't decide if she would go near Hector or not. She didn't know what she would face. What if he slept naked? Although it was something that ruled it out, it crossed her mind that she might not find him in a decent state, and they would both be in an awkward position. No, she didn't want that. Mainly for Hector than for herself. So she decided what to do so there would be no problem. She moved a little further and began to call him. “Hector, Hector. Where are you?"She called him a few more times until she got a response."Just a minute, I'm coming." Hector answered.Delma smiled and shook her head. She decided not to tell him anything about Skye so as not to disappoint him.She saw him approaching her, laden with his bedding."What happened?" he asked."Were you still asleep?"Hector nodded. "I r

They had finished eating, and Delma was clearing the table. “Until Talisha and I clean up, why don't you three go outside for a walk? Maysie needs to start walking, but not on her own yet. "It's such a lovely day today, I am sure you will enjoy it." They agreed and went out for a walk. "Hold me by the waist for support, Maysie." Hector urged her. Maysie obeyed, though she didn't feel comfortable with that at first. Her hesitation lasted until she wrapped her arm around his waist and realized Hector was right. She felt safer using her shaky legs. A stitch of jealousy shot through Skye's heart, and she closed her eyes tightly for a moment. Is it possible that she was jealous of Maysie? She took Maysie's free hand and squeezed it in hers. No, she wasn't jealous of Maysie, but Maysie's arm enveloped Hector's waist. She took a deep breath and wished it was her hand around his waist. She bit her lower lip. What was she thinking? That was foolish of her, as Hector had no desire for he

It was early afternoon when they arrived at the castle the next day.The previous night, they had stopped to rest and sleep.Men were divided into pairs for being on the lookout. There was a pair change every two hours. In the morning, Skye had woken up more tired than she had gone to bed. She hadn't slept well last night. She wasn't used to sleeping outside, and the slightest noise woke her.And she remembered very clearly that whenever she opened her eyes during the night, she noticed that Hector was nearby, sitting close to the fire or leaning against a nearby tree. His eyes were always turned towards the side where the women were sleeping. Each time Skye closed her eyes feeling safe.Hector and his men led their horses to the stables so they could be cared for by the stablemen.Skye and Maysie were left in the care of the servants and maids. After the greetings and broad smiles of welcome, one of the maids led Skye and Maysie to the chamber where Skye lived."Finally!" Skye sighed

Hector escorted the two girls through the corridors. Skye held Maysie's hand tightly, offering more consolation to herself than to Maysie."I feel like I'll never learn to find my way on my own," Skye said.“You'll learn, don't worry. All it takes is a little time."Did that mean they would live here after the wedding?Skye nodded. "Can Maysie sit next to me at the table?" she asked him."Yes, but Maysie?" he addressed her and turned to look at her."Yes, Hector?"“I love to hear you talk about a thousand things, but please, for this time, only speak if you are asked to, okay? When the king addresses you, or calls you to get close to him, bow before you answer and call him, Highness. Don’t forget it. Okay?""Yes, no problem Hector. Anything you want." Maysie answered him.Hector laughed softly. "That's my girl."Skye squeezed Maysie's hand in hers. "I'm not hiding from you, I started feeling nervous," she told him.Hector nodded. "I understand, but there is no need. Everything is goin

The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and her blood froze in her veins under his slimy caress.Skye didn’t know what to do. How should she react? Was she allowed to react? The man before her was Hector's brother and the future King.Hector growled and grabbed Donncha's hand, twisting it hard."Did I warn you to let go of her or not?"Skye watched Donncha's face contort into a grimace of pain as he showed exalted pride and didn't make the slightest sound of pain.Hector leaned close to his face."I swear to God, if you ever consider touching her again, I won't hold myself back," he hissed his warning and continued squeezing his hand. Donncha's face had turned red, being unable to utter a word.“Stop, Hector! Let him!” Roisin interjected. “Haven’t you realized that Donncha likes to tease you? He was just joking. You don't have to break his hand.” she said, placing her hand on Hector's. “You can leave him now. Please," she whispered her last words, looking Hector in the eyes. His g

It was the first time that fortuity or fate had brought them so close. Her breath hitched as she sank into his eyes and was astonished by her reflection in his dilated pupils. That closeness didn't only take Skye by surprise, but also Hector, who forgot how to breathe, and his heart was about to explode. His burning eyes sank into hers. They stood still, looking at each other, forgetting where they were and that they were not alone but with all the service staff of the castle present. She dried the drool in her mouth, leaving it arid, and Skye unconsciously licked her lower lip. Hector's eyes trailed down to her lips and fixed on her juicy wet lips. Her cheeks began to burn, and she struggled to fight it off.Her lips parted to answer his question, but someone else's voice overtook her."Don't tell me you're going to kiss, because I already feel nauseous. I will throw up.” Donncha sneered and touched his stomach ostentatiously.Skye jerked back, breaking eye contact, pressing her hand

"Keep pressing your finger, I'll be right back," Talisha instructed."Okay," Iona murmured, her voice tighter than usual. As Talisha walked away, Iona's gaze followed her, watching as she exchanged words with Maysie, though she couldn't quite catch them. Maysie left hurriedly while Talisha shifted to another counter where Fergus cut meat with a cleaver.Iona wrinkled her nose. Was it necessary to leave here, too? He had always annoyed her, and now that she was forced to see him more often than when they still lived in their castle, the sight of him was even more unsettling.Anice was nowhere to be found. Bored of scanning the kitchen, she let her eyes rest on the wooden surface before her.She pressed harder against her injured finger, biting her lip at the sharp, unrelenting sting. Talisha was taking too long, making keeping her thoughts at bay difficult for Iona. And so, they spilled out.Hector's unmasked face rose in front of her, more vivid than before. Her stomach tightened.“Af

As the distance between them narrowed, the twisting knot in Iona's stomach grew tighter."Good morning," Dougal greeted her as soon as they were face-to-face.Only then did Iona notice the dark circles under his eyes. She was almost sure they hadn't been there the day before when they had met."I wouldn't call it a good," she replied curtly, her voice clipped. "Let me guess—you were waiting for me. Of course, you were."Dougal nodded, his gaze dropping to the dirt road beneath their feet. "Yes, I was," he admitted, his voice quiet but steady.“You shouldn't have,” she said abruptly. “I can walk alone. I know the way to the castle.” The sharp edge in her tone was impossible to miss. Her father's words—be kind to him—echoed in her head, but patience wasn't her strong suit. Dougal could get under her skin, no matter how hard she tried to ignore him. It was as if the more she avoided him, the more he appeared in her path. She sighed heavily and moved past him, pulling her cape tighter aro

Malcolm sat at the table while Fiona stood beside him, serving food. They turned their gazes in that direction when they heard the door open. Fiona straightened her back, smiled, and held a spoon. "Welcome home, my little girl. We were waiting for you, but you were late, and your father was so hungry. Come and sit with us; you must be hungry."Iona slowly dragged her feet to the table and sat down. "They gave us food in the castle, but I will eat with you too," Iona said."Really?" Fiona asked, clearly impressed. "I didn't expect that.""So, what did they give you to eat? The lords' leftovers, I presume," Malcolm sneered.Iona shook her head. "No, Father. They fed us the potatoes and vegetables that I peeled and washed," she said, emphasizing her words, and pressed her fingers to her chest to point to herself. "They were boiled with a little meat," she added, finishing her sentence.Fiona finished serving and sat down as well. She looked at Iona with concern. "I'm sorry, my little gir

Talisha strode ahead, the corridor stretching long and cold ahead of her. Its stone walls whispered with memories of a time not so long ago when Iona walked these halls with her chin held high and wearing a beautiful and expensive gown. But now, her footsteps followed Talisha's brisk pace, her shoulders hunched under the weight of her new role, and her thoughts swirling in bitterness."Your duties are simple," Talisha began, her tone clipped and unyielding. "You will peel vegetables, clean the kitchen, and assist wherever needed. You are to remain in the kitchen—only the kitchen. When your work is done, you may return to your home. Is that clear?"The words felt like a slap. Iona's eyebrows drew together in silent protest, the weight of disappointment settling heavily on her chest. Only in the kitchen? It was a bitter pill to swallow. She had imagined something different— her work should include the entire castle so that she could move freely around it, to see and hear. But now?Swall

Talisha returned, holding a small leather pouch in her hands."This is it," she said softly, handing it to Hector. Her voice trembled just slightly, but she quickly turned away. "Now, I can get back to my work.""Yes, of course. Thank you, Talisha."As she left, Hector stared at the pouch silently for a moment. His hands moved almost mechanically as he loosened the string and tipped its contents into his palm. The locket fell out, cold and heavy against his skin.He let the pouch drop onto the table as he studied the locket. The delicate gold chain spilled between his fingers like liquid light. He turned the locket over in his hand. The intricate floral engravings still caught the light, and the details seemed sharper, almost painfully vivid. At its center, the blue sapphire gleamed."It's beautiful!" Skye's voice broke through his thoughts, drawing his attention to her admiration."Yes, it is," Hector said, though his voice came out hoarse. He clenched the locket tightly, his throat

Skye gazed thoughtfully at the doorway through which Talisha had just exited. Had she made the right decision? Perhaps she shouldn't have agreed to let Iona into their home and, by extension, into their lives. She couldn't forget how Iona had treated her in the past; it was a constant reminder of how little she could trust her. However, according to Talisha, Iona's family had fallen into poverty, losing their former glory and power. Maybe Iona and her parents, indeed, were in need. She bit her lower lip, deep in thought. Would that be enough to prevent Iona's malicious intentions?"Have you changed your mind?" Hector's voice cut through her thoughts. He stood off to the side, observing every move and subtle change in her expression. Startled, Skye turned her head towards him but didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she paced back and forth, her thoughts in turmoil. Finally, she said, "Do you think she will try something? I can’t forget her past behavior, but considering her current si

A sharp, icy breeze swept through the air, stirring Iona's hair. She shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around her trembling form. Her fists were slick with sweat, and her heart hammered against her ribcage. She knew that her actions were reckless. One wrong move could leave her life hanging by a thread. A single order from the king could end everything. As she pondered her situation, the weight of her misery pressed down on her. Her life had become a bleak, meaningless struggle. Yet, this desperate act offered her a chance to change everything. Even if she failed, at least she would have tried; she would have fought for a better future. For that alone, the risk was worth taking.Iona had bet her life on a perilous gamble, ready to risk everything. With determination etched on her face, she pursed her lips and stared at the imposing door ahead. Why are they delaying? Maybe they didn't hear?Just as she raised her hand to knock again, the heavy door creaked open, leaving her hand susp

"I'm sorry I'm late," Iona said, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "With those clouds hiding the sun, I couldn't tell if it was noon yet. I decided to come and wait for you anyway."Anise's eyes sparkled with excitement as she gestured for Iona to take a seat. "We have so much to discuss," she said eagerly. "Let's begin with why you decided to move to the town, I never expected you to leave the castle," Anise asked.Iona's eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief. "There's a plan," she revealed, raising Anise's eyebrows."Plan? What plan?" Anise leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper."I want to make Hector fall in love with me and leave Skye. I want to be a princess in her place."Anise's eyes widened. "That would be amazing. But how?""I'll seduce him somehow. I'll have to find his soft spots first and use them to my advantage," Iona replied, determination gleaming in her eyes.Anise's eyes lit up. "And that means Skye will be out of the castle," she said."And out of o

Maysie knocked on the door."Come in, Maysie," Skye called from inside. Maysie entered and found Skye pacing anxiously. The room was warm, the fire crackling in the hearth, contrasting sharply with the cold outside.Skye's face lit up with relief as she hurriedly approached and hugged Maysie. "You're finally here." Maysie's eyes widened in surprise; Skye wasn't usually this emotional."Mary told me that you need me. Are you okay?" Maysie asked, feeling Skye's fragile, trembling body. "You are trembling. Are you cold?""No. I'm scared." Skye whispered, her voice barely audible.Maysie looked at her, concern etched on her face. "Did something happen between you and Hector?""Not yet, but I'm afraid it will," Skye admitted, her eyes darting nervously."I don't understand, Skye." Maysie said, her brow furrowing."I will explain to you as we drink our tea," she said, gently guiding her toward the small living room. A large tray with tea and side dishes waited on a small table.
