Rhydian

I stood outside Ana’s door longer than I meant to.

Not because I was uncertain about knocking. That part had already happened

somewhere between leaving my rooms and crossing the western corridor for what

was becoming a humiliatingly familiar reason. The uncertainty came afterward,

standing there with my hand near the wood like an idiot while the compound

settled into night around me.

A pair of clerks passed the far staircase carrying records between them. One

of them glanced at me and

RHYDIANThe food on the platters had gone cold before the third jug of wine came up from the cellar. Down at the end of the hall, the men from the southern garrison were already shouting, slamming their cups on the tables every time the kitchen boys brought out more bread.I didn't touch my plate. My fingers stayed on the silver salt cellar by my hand, tracing the small ridges stamped into the bottom.Ana sat right beside me, her shoulders straight under her grey dress. She hadn't eaten either. She had spent the last hour breaking her bread into tiny crumbs, piling them up near her knife. Every time a heavy barrel rolled past the door, the thick smell of the food made her head drop, her face turning pale.Across the table, Vessa sat next to her father, twisting a red ribbon around her fork. She still wore her heavy ceremonial coat, and she had pinned the white ribbons from the mare to her chest so everyone from the lower yard could see them."The wind is bad tonight, Alpha," Vessa’s f

RHYDIANThe white mare had arrived through the front gates at dawn, her grey flanks rubbed down with sweet oils and silver ribbons braided into her mane. The little brass bells tied around her harness kept clicking together every time she shifted her weight on the cobbles. Below my window, the lower garrison boys had been polishing tack that was already clean since the first bell sounded, their brushes making a dry scraping sound while Bram walked past the stables with his fingers hooked into his ceremonial belt. The blessing ceremony was older than Ironfang itself, older than the five southern septs that currently sent their tribute-grain to our vaults. A pregnant Luna was meant to ride the mare once around the inner perimeter while the guardsmen lined the wall to witness the bloodline. Afterwards, Alpha Bram would speak the winter names over the child, the priestesses would dump the hyssop water over the mare's hocks, and the clerk would register the birth-date in the iron-bound led

ANAThe linen of his shirt was damp where my forehead pressed into the seam of his shoulder.I didn't take my hand off my apron; the wool beneath my palms felt thin, barely separating the skin of my fingers from the small, secret heat that had stayed hidden since the new moon.My heels dug into the edge of the rug, my boots slipping a fraction on the stone before I could find my balance against his thigh."She can have the first cradle," I said, my voice catching on the dry salt that still sat at the back of my throat.I didn't look at his face, only at the silver button hanging by its gray thread from his collar."But she won't have the only one, Rhydian."Rhydian didn't shift his grip on my skirt. His fingers stayed tucked into the grey wool, but his thumb stopped its short, restless movement against the grain. His chin rose by an inch, his head turning toward the window where the light was turning the color of wet slate."What did you say, Ana?""The calendar board," I said, and my

ANAMy fingers remained on the wooden notches of the calendar board by the washstand. The little bone peg sat in the third hole past the full moon marker, right where I had left it three mornings ago when I first started counting the days on my knuckles. The moon pool in the lower garden had already gone dark and filled again since the last time Sena had to carry the stained cloths down to the laundry tubs. My stomach gave a small, greasy lurch, the smell of the mutton fat from the breakfast trenchers rising up from my apron.Sena sat by the larger cedar chest, her teeth tugging on a length of coarse grey thread while she mended the hem of my wool gown. She didn't look up when I pulled my hand away from the board, but her needle stopped mid-stitch, the iron point catching the grey light from the high window."The herb woman from the south gatehouse came by with the dried tansy while you were in the clerk’s office," Sena said. She tucked the needle into her bodice, her palms smoothing

ANAThe iron handles of the third oak crate dropped against the wood with a heavy thud. Two young guardsmen from the lower garrison wiped their foreheads with their wool sleeves, their boots leaving grey tracks of garden mud on my floor. Rhydian stood by the small window, his fingers hooked into his belt while he watched them shove the last container into the corner by the wardrobe."Is that everything from the western gallery?" Rhydian asked. He didn't turn his head from the window, but his thumb twitched against the leather. The taller guard looked down at his own mud marks. "Every box with the seal, Your Highness. We took the three cedar chests from Lady Vessa's side room while she was at the noon chapel service. The rest came out of the high vault near the old chapel."Rhydian nodded once, his chin dropping toward his collar. "Go down to the kitchen. Tell Marta I said to give you both a measure of the winter ale."The door clicked shut behind them. The room smelled different now,

ANAMy boots crunched on a shard of glass before I even reached the center of the room.Vessa did not look down. Her fingers were dug into the hem of my grey wool gown, the one with the slight tear near the pocket that Sena had promised to mend after the midday meal. She gave it a hard yank. The fabric tore with a dry, screeching sound that went right through my ears. She threw the pieces down on top of the pile of shifts and stockings already carpeting the stone."Vessa, let go of that," Rhydian said. His voice didn't rise, but he took two long strides into the room, his hand reaching for her forearm. He missed her wrist as she twisted away, catching the edge of her loose sleeve instead. The silk strained.Vessa jerked herself backward, her heel catching on the overturned leg of the writing desk. She stumbled, her hip hitting the wall before she straightened herself. Her breath came out in short, rattling puffs, her hair falling out of its pins and sticking to the sweat on her cheeks
