Chapter 3

Hyacinth
A week earlier, on the second day of Adrian and Sienna’s Cape Cod trip, I had submitted my departure forms to the International Programs Office.

As director of the innovation center, Adrian only needed to approve my withdrawal from the robotics team and release my project files.

Just as I expected, he was too busy taking pictures of Sienna on the beach to read the documents. He gave both forms his electronic approval without hesitation.

Now there were only three days left.

Once I completed the final handover, I could leave Kingsley and begin again at the Zurich Institute for Intelligent Systems.

After some thought, I called Professor Moretti.

During my freshman year, a search-route algorithm I designed had won an international undergraduate engineering award. Professor Moretti had invited me to join her alpine rescue robotics project in Zurich.

At the time, Adrian was preparing to run for student council president. He told me the innovation center he had just founded would collapse without my help.

So I turned Zurich down.

I stayed at Kingsley, built the robotics team, wrote its operating rules, secured its sponsors, and spent most of my research time solving one emergency after another for Adrian.

Two years later, he had become the most celebrated student leader on campus.

Most people remembered me only as Adrian Hale’s difficult girlfriend.

Looking back, I had been foolish.

Feelings could change without warning. The future I built for myself would not.

Professor Moretti answered, and I explained why I was calling.

I expected her to criticize me for wasting the opportunity she had once offered. Instead, she sighed.

“I’ve heard enough about what happened at Kingsley to understand your situation,” she said. “I’ve been hoping you would come back to research.”

Then her voice turned serious.

“But Claire, is this truly your decision this time?”

“Yes. Most of the paperwork is complete. I leave on Friday.”

“Leave for where?”

Adrian’s startled voice came from behind me.

I turned and saw him standing in the study doorway, frowning.

Professor Moretti had already ended the call, so I calmly locked my phone.

I was deciding how much I should tell him when his phone chimed.

A message from Sienna appeared on the screen.

[I found a stray kitten outside my dorm. It looked so hungry that I ran all the way to the convenience store to buy it some food.]

Adrian immediately replied:

[That’s adorable.]

Her response came within seconds.

[What’s more adorable, the kitten or me?]

Another message followed, this one containing a selfie. Sienna held the kitten against her cheek, lips pursed as she made a peace sign at the camera.

Adrian’s mouth curved into a smile.

[The kitten is adorable. You’re more adorable.]

Only after sending it did he seem to remember I was still there.

The smile disappeared, and he looked at me impatiently.

“Didn’t I tell you to get some rest? Why are you still standing around in here?”

His voice was cold, completely different from the one he had used with Sienna.

He had also forgotten that, only moments ago, he had heard me say I was leaving.

I gave a quiet laugh and decided there was no point explaining.

“I still have a few things to finish.”

“It’s already late. What could possibly be so urgent?” His brows drew together. “Claire, I don’t want to criticize you, but you’re terrible at managing your time. Why can’t you plan things properly for once?”

I didn’t remind him that most of my delays came from the work he dropped on me without warning.

I also didn’t argue until we were both exhausted, as I had so many times before.

I simply remained silent.

Taking my silence as an admission, Adrian said nothing more and went into the bedroom.

Before long, I heard him laughing through the wall.

I could hardly remember the last time he had laughed that freely with me. Only Sienna seemed able to make him that happy now.

I ignored him, sat at the desk, and opened the German edition of Safety Verification for Autonomous Systems.

Five years had passed since I first began studying alpine rescue systems, and the field had already advanced far beyond what I remembered. Professor Moretti might be willing to help me return, but I still needed to prove that I belonged there.

Fortunately, my foundation was strong.

It would take time to catch up, but my ability had never disappeared.

“You’re reading a research paper in German?”

I hadn’t heard Adrian return.

He took the book from my hands, flipped carelessly through several pages, and tossed it back onto the desk.

“What are you reading this for?” A faint sneer touched his voice. “Do you even understand it?”

“I’m just looking through it.”

I closed the book and set it aside.

Adrian had no idea that one of its authors would become my new supervisor the following week.

Adrian went still."If we're going to start over, we need to be honest with each other," I said. "Report the crimes and accept your share of the consequences. Why would that make you hesitate?"His thumb hovered over the send button. Seconds passed before he said, "Sienna is only twenty, Claire. She was wrong, but if she's convicted, this could ruin the rest of her life.""What about mine?"I looked at him and felt the last disturbance inside me settle."She claimed my work, took my opportunities, and used your authority to humiliate me again and again. Three students were injured because of her. She stole the private records of more than a hundred people."I nodded toward the phone."You keep saying you love me, but you still expect me to carry the consequences for her.""That's not what I mean." He spoke quickly. "I only think there may be another way to handle this.""There isn't."My voice stayed quiet."Send the evidence, and I'll believe you've truly chosen me."The promise seeme

"What are you doing here?" I spoke to Adrian with the calm courtesy I'd use for an old classmate. He heard the distance in it. His throat moved before he answered. "Sienna and I are over."He drew a breath and looked directly at me."I've thought everything through. I'll leave student council. I'll walk away from every plan the Hale family made for me. I can move to Zurich and stay with you. We can start over."He delivered the offer like a magnificent sacrifice.I laughed."Are you choosing to leave, or did Kingsley remove you as president?"I no longer followed campus gossip, but my old teammates still sent me occasional updates. After I left, Sienna entered the National Robotics Challenge as the team's lead creator. "Claire, I've never bent this far for anyone in my life. That should tell you how special you are to me."His voice grew steadier as he spoke."I don't have one-tenth this much patience with Sienna."Every word made him more certain of his own generosity. He seemed to believe that once he displayed a sufficiently expensive form of devotion, I would gratefully return to my place beside him."You've misunderstood."I picked up the documents beside my laptop and held them toward the camera. The first was a four-year doctoral contract with the Zurich Institute for Intelligent Systems. The second confirmed my fully funded position in the European Alpine Rescue Initiative."I'm not on vacation, and I'm not waiting for you to collect me."I showed him the official seal."My academic record has been permanently transferred. I won't be returning to Kingsley for the next four years."Adrian's expression went completely blank. The velvet box slipped from his hand. The bracelet struck the floor wi

Once I left Kingsley, I quickly recovered my old rhythm.I'd spent most of the previous two years keeping Adrian's innovation center alive, but I'd never stopped reading the new work in autonomous navigation. Returning to research was difficult. It wasn't unfamiliar.Adrian sent message after message. At first, he still didn't believe I'd really left.[I'll give you a week to calm down. My driver will pick you up this weekend.][Apologize, and I'll restore all your team permissions. We can put this behind us.]I didn't answer. On the third day, he sent a screenshot of a reassignment order. Sienna had been demoted from co-captain to a volunteer position in the university archives.[I figured out what happened. She mixed your transfer request into my approval queue while she was organizing the files. She didn't know it was yours.][I've disciplined her. You've made your point, Claire. This has gone far enough.]Not long afterward, an apology email arrived from Sienna. At first glance, it

I took out my phone and called the Campus Safety Office. "Then we'll let the university decide."I hadn't planned to make any of this public. If Adrian intended to trap me with a disciplinary complaint, however, I had no objection to dragging every record into daylight. The call had barely connected when he snatched the phone from my hand and ended it. "Have you lost your mind?""I'm thinking clearly for the first time in months. I only want to know whether Kingsley's rules follow the system records or Mr. Hale's mood."He had never seen me refuse to give an inch. Panic finally broke through his confidence. After several seconds, he forced his voice to soften. "Fine. Enough. I understand that Sienna makes you uncomfortable. Starting tomorrow, I won't meet her alone. Is that what you want?" He moved closer, as if the crisis had already passed. "We'll settle our plans for after graduation too. Right away."He opened a message thread with an event planner and held out the screen."I've be

Adrian stood frozen.Sienna's eyes lit up. The corners of her mouth started to rise before she rearranged her features into concern. "Claire, you can't throw away your future because you're upset. You and Adrian have been together for--""Sienna, get out."For the first time, Adrian didn't let her finish.Sienna bit her lip. She told him softly not to lose his temper, then limped out of the room. The moment the door closed, Adrian's face hardened. "I've agreed to marry you, Claire. How far are you planning to take this tantrum?" He shoved the documents back toward me. "Take back the breakup. I won't recognize these forms, either. Delete the application now, and I'll pretend none of this happened."He spoke as though my future were a motion on his agenda, waiting for his veto.I felt something closer to pity than anger. If Adrian had become this arrogant, I'd helped him get there.Every time he offered me the smallest kindness, I'd taken the path he laid out and returned to him.
