Chapter 4

Hyacinth
“Was there something else?” I asked.

In the past, whenever Adrian came into the study to speak to me, I immediately put down whatever I was doing and gave him my full attention.

He clearly wasn’t used to my indifference. His expression stiffened.

“Actually, there is.”

He pulled out a chair and sat across from me.

“Sienna did well at the trustee demonstration, so I’m promoting her to co-captain of the robotics team. It will also encourage the younger students.” He looked at me. “What do you think?”

He made it sound as though he wanted my opinion, but I knew the appointment had already been decided.

“I don’t have a problem with it.”

Surprise flashed across his face. He hadn’t expected me to agree so easily.

“But if I reward one person, I also have to hold the others accountable,” he continued. “You haven’t led a major competition project in months, so I’m moving you to equipment inventory for now. Once your performance improves, I’ll consider returning you to the algorithm group.”

His tone softened into the patient voice he used when explaining something to a child.

“It won’t be permanent. I’m doing what’s best for the team. You’re my girlfriend, Claire. You should support me more than anyone.”

I nearly laughed.

He still had no idea that I had already left the team.

Adrian could tell from a single message whether Sienna was upset. He remembered that she hated sitting in the back seat, avoided nuts, and liked being called sunshine.

Yet my withdrawal forms had passed through his inbox. He had approved them himself without noticing what they were.

When I didn’t respond, Adrian assumed I was about to argue. His expression immediately darkened.

“You can disagree, but it won’t change anything. The appointment notice has already gone out. Your access has been moved to the equipment room, and Sienna will take your station in the algorithm lab.”

He leaned back with complete confidence.

“Either accept the reassignment or leave the team.”

Then he gave me the warning he believed would frighten me into submission.

“Think carefully before you make a decision you’ll regret. The robotics team just received a national research grant. Anyone who stays through next year will have experience most graduate programs would compete for. You won’t find another opportunity like this if you walk away.”

His tone made it clear that he didn’t believe I would ever leave.

The same thing had happened too many times.

Over the past year, every complaint from Sienna had pushed me another step down. I had gone from cofounder and captain to an ordinary team member, then to the person everyone called when equipment broke.

I had endured every previous demotion, so Adrian was certain I would endure this one too. He believed I had invested too much in the team—and in him—to give either of them up.

I gave him a faint smile.

“I never said I wouldn’t accept it.”

His shoulders relaxed. “Good. Then it’s settled.”

To Adrian, my silence had always meant surrender.

He stood and started toward the door, then stopped as he noticed the empty space on my desk.

“Where’s our picture?”

For years, a framed photograph of us had sat beside my laptop. It had been taken beneath the lanterns at the lighthouse festival, just after Adrian kissed me for the first time.

It wasn’t the only one.

He had been my phone wallpaper. Photographs of us hung in the bedroom and filled the small photo sleeve in my wallet.

Adrian used to tease me for caring about such sentimental things.

What he never understood was that I kept those pictures to remind myself that no matter how cruel he became, there had once been a boy who loved me.

Later, I realized how foolish that was.

The photographs no longer proved that he loved me. They only proved how desperately I had tried to believe he still did.

“The frame broke,” I said calmly. “So I put it away.”

Adrian frowned.

“How do you manage to be so careless with everything?”

He immediately looked down at the floor, checking for pieces of glass.

“Make sure you clean the room properly. I don’t want anyone getting hurt.”

His tone softened slightly as he headed for the door.

“Sienna is coming over tomorrow night to work on her campaign speech.”

I watched him leave and laughed quietly at myself.

Of course he hadn’t been worried that I might have cut my hands.

He was worried that Sienna might step on a piece of glass tomorrow.

This townhouse belonged to both of us. I paid half the rent and took care of nearly everything inside it.

A few months ago, however, I had found a rhinestone hair clip beneath the sofa cushions. Later, I discovered several bottles of Sienna’s favorite hazelnut syrup in the kitchen, even though neither Adrian nor I drank it.

That was when I realized Adrian had been bringing her into our home for months.

Adrian went still."If we're going to start over, we need to be honest with each other," I said. "Report the crimes and accept your share of the consequences. Why would that make you hesitate?"His thumb hovered over the send button. Seconds passed before he said, "Sienna is only twenty, Claire. She was wrong, but if she's convicted, this could ruin the rest of her life.""What about mine?"I looked at him and felt the last disturbance inside me settle."She claimed my work, took my opportunities, and used your authority to humiliate me again and again. Three students were injured because of her. She stole the private records of more than a hundred people."I nodded toward the phone."You keep saying you love me, but you still expect me to carry the consequences for her.""That's not what I mean." He spoke quickly. "I only think there may be another way to handle this.""There isn't."My voice stayed quiet."Send the evidence, and I'll believe you've truly chosen me."The promise seeme

"What are you doing here?" I spoke to Adrian with the calm courtesy I'd use for an old classmate. He heard the distance in it. His throat moved before he answered. "Sienna and I are over."He drew a breath and looked directly at me."I've thought everything through. I'll leave student council. I'll walk away from every plan the Hale family made for me. I can move to Zurich and stay with you. We can start over."He delivered the offer like a magnificent sacrifice.I laughed."Are you choosing to leave, or did Kingsley remove you as president?"I no longer followed campus gossip, but my old teammates still sent me occasional updates. After I left, Sienna entered the National Robotics Challenge as the team's lead creator. "Claire, I've never bent this far for anyone in my life. That should tell you how special you are to me."His voice grew steadier as he spoke."I don't have one-tenth this much patience with Sienna."Every word made him more certain of his own generosity. He seemed to believe that once he displayed a sufficiently expensive form of devotion, I would gratefully return to my place beside him."You've misunderstood."I picked up the documents beside my laptop and held them toward the camera. The first was a four-year doctoral contract with the Zurich Institute for Intelligent Systems. The second confirmed my fully funded position in the European Alpine Rescue Initiative."I'm not on vacation, and I'm not waiting for you to collect me."I showed him the official seal."My academic record has been permanently transferred. I won't be returning to Kingsley for the next four years."Adrian's expression went completely blank. The velvet box slipped from his hand. The bracelet struck the floor wi

Once I left Kingsley, I quickly recovered my old rhythm.I'd spent most of the previous two years keeping Adrian's innovation center alive, but I'd never stopped reading the new work in autonomous navigation. Returning to research was difficult. It wasn't unfamiliar.Adrian sent message after message. At first, he still didn't believe I'd really left.[I'll give you a week to calm down. My driver will pick you up this weekend.][Apologize, and I'll restore all your team permissions. We can put this behind us.]I didn't answer. On the third day, he sent a screenshot of a reassignment order. Sienna had been demoted from co-captain to a volunteer position in the university archives.[I figured out what happened. She mixed your transfer request into my approval queue while she was organizing the files. She didn't know it was yours.][I've disciplined her. You've made your point, Claire. I took out my phone and called the Campus Safety Office. "Then we'll let the university decide."I hadn't planned to make any of this public. If Adrian intended to trap me with a disciplinary complaint, however, I had no objection to dragging every record into daylight. The call had barely connected when he snatched the phone from my hand and ended it. "Have you lost your mind?""I'm thinking clearly for the first time in months. I only want to know whether Kingsley's rules follow the system records or Mr. Hale's mood."He had never seen me refuse to give an inch. Panic finally broke through his confidence. After several seconds, he forced his voice to soften. "Fine. Enough. I understand that Sienna makes you uncomfortable. Starting tomorrow, I won't meet her alone. Is that what you want?" He moved closer, as if the crisis had already passed. "We'll settle our plans for after graduation too. Right away."He opened a message thread with an event planner and held out the screen."I've be

Adrian stood frozen.Sienna's eyes lit up. The corners of her mouth started to rise before she rearranged her features into concern. "Claire, you can't throw away your future because you're upset. You and Adrian have been together for--""Sienna, get out."For the first time, Adrian didn't let her finish.Sienna bit her lip. She told him softly not to lose his temper, then limped out of the room. The moment the door closed, Adrian's face hardened. "I've agreed to marry you, Claire. How far are you planning to take this tantrum?" He shoved the documents back toward me. "Take back the breakup. I won't recognize these forms, either. Delete the application now, and I'll pretend none of this happened."He spoke as though my future were a motion on his agenda, waiting for his veto.I felt something closer to pity than anger. If Adrian had become this arrogant, I'd helped him get there.Every time he offered me the smallest kindness, I'd taken the path he laid out and returned to him.
