Chapter 5

Hyacinth
I had confronted Adrian the first time I found Sienna’s hair clip in our townhouse.

He seemed to have expected the question. Within seconds, he pulled up the security footage from our front door and showed me that other student council members had been present every time she visited.

Then he turned the accusation against me.

He said I had searched our home for evidence because I was jealous. I had taken an ordinary student council meeting and tried to make it sound dirty.

To punish me for “imagining things,” he began bringing Sienna home openly.

She sat in my chair, used my supplies, and made drinks in my kitchen. Whenever I entered the room, I could sense the challenge beneath her innocent smile.

“You don’t mind me being here, do you, Claire?”

Yet nothing between them ever crossed a line I could prove.

There was always another student nearby, an unfinished campaign speech on the table, or some last-minute project they claimed they had to complete.

Eventually, I began to doubt myself.

Every day, I wondered whether I was too jealous, too narrow-minded, or too determined to find something that wasn’t there.

Looking back, I had wasted enough time analyzing their relationship to complete another research project.

The next morning, Adrian announced at the team meeting that Sienna had been promoted to co-captain and I had been reassigned to equipment inventory.

He watched me carefully throughout the announcement, clearly expecting me to object.

Only when I accepted the inventory list without a word did he finally believe I had surrendered.

He was in an excellent mood.

So was I.

Over the next two days, Adrian held a celebration for Sienna at the lakeside club while I collected my Swiss visa.

They went to an amusement park while I packed my belongings. In the end, everything I wanted to take fit inside one suitcase and a laptop bag.

They attended the alumni ball and let their friends tease them into dancing together while I transferred my code, equipment records, and project permissions.

By Friday afternoon, I had completed my final departure paperwork.

As I turned to leave, Ms. Patel stopped me.

“Claire, Adrian asked you to go up to the student council suite before you leave campus. He said he needed to speak with you.”

My first instinct was to refuse.

But my flight was leaving that night. If Adrian went out with Sienna again and didn’t come home, this might be the last time we ever saw each other.

We had been together for five years.

Even an ending deserved a goodbye.

I took the elevator to the top floor of the student center.

The suite door was partly open. Through the glass wall, I saw Adrian leaning back against the sofa.

Sienna had taken off her shoes and was stretched out beside him, her head resting in his lap.

One of Adrian’s hands rested near her shoulder. He said something I couldn’t hear, and she covered her mouth as she laughed.

I stopped outside the door.

For a moment, I considered leaving without disturbing them.

Then Sienna saw me.

She gasped and sat up so quickly that her hair fell across her face.

“Claire? What are you doing here?”

Adrian immediately straightened. A flicker of panic crossed his face as he smoothed his wrinkled shirt.

Then the panic became anger.

“Who gave you permission to come up here?”

His voice was sharp enough to fill the entire suite.

“I’ve told everyone that no one is allowed on this floor without my approval. Why do you think you’re an exception?”

I remembered the original rule clearly.

No one except Claire was allowed to disturb him upstairs without permission.

Back then, I had believed the exception meant I was special.

Now I understood.

The rule had never changed. I was simply no longer the exception.

“Ms. Patel said you wanted to see me,” I replied.

Adrian gave a cold laugh and strode to his desk. He pressed the intercom and ordered Ms. Patel upstairs.

Less than two minutes later, she entered the suite.

“Did you tell Claire that I wanted to see her?” Adrian demanded.

Ms. Patel looked at his icy expression, then at Sienna sitting beside him with reddened eyes.

She froze.

After a long silence, she lowered her gaze.

“I’m not sure. I don’t remember exactly what I said.”

Adrian looked as though he had just won an argument.

He turned to me with open contempt.

“Was this really necessary, Claire?”

“I thought you had finally learned to behave like an adult. Apparently, you’ve only found a new way to keep tabs on me.”

He folded his arms.

“If you’re this desperate to know where I am, should I start sending you my schedule every morning?”

His mouth twisted into a mocking smile.

“Or would you rather hide a tracker in my coat so you can watch me every minute of the day?”

Adrian went still."If we're going to start over, we need to be honest with each other," I said. "Report the crimes and accept your share of the consequences. Why would that make you hesitate?"His thumb hovered over the send button. Seconds passed before he said, "Sienna is only twenty, Claire. She was wrong, but if she's convicted, this could ruin the rest of her life.""What about mine?"I looked at him and felt the last disturbance inside me settle."She claimed my work, took my opportunities, and used your authority to humiliate me again and again. Three students were injured because of her. She stole the private records of more than a hundred people."I nodded toward the phone."You keep saying you love me, but you still expect me to carry the consequences for her.""That's not what I mean." He spoke quickly. "I only think there may be another way to handle this.""There isn't."My voice stayed quiet."Send the evidence, and I'll believe you've truly chosen me."The promise seeme

"What are you doing here?" I spoke to Adrian with the calm courtesy I'd use for an old classmate. He heard the distance in it. His throat moved before he answered. "Sienna and I are over."He drew a breath and looked directly at me."I've thought everything through. I'll leave student council. I'll walk away from every plan the Hale family made for me. I can move to Zurich and stay with you. We can start over."He delivered the offer like a magnificent sacrifice.I laughed."Are you choosing to leave, or did Kingsley remove you as president?"I no longer followed campus gossip, but my old teammates still sent me occasional updates. After I left, Sienna entered the National Robotics Challenge as the team's lead creator. She ignored the battery overheating warnings in my final test report and insisted on finishing a public demonstration before the arena closed. Two drones lost control above the gymnasium. "Claire, I've never bent this far for anyone in my life. That should tell you how special you are to me."His voice grew steadier as he spoke."I don't have one-tenth this much patience with Sienna."Every word made him more certain of his own generosity. He seemed to believe that once he displayed a sufficiently expensive form of devotion, I would gratefully return to my place beside him."You've misunderstood."I picked up the documents beside my laptop and held them toward the camera. The first was a four-year doctoral contract with the Zurich Institute for Intelligent Systems. The second confirmed my fully funded position in the European Alpine Rescue Initiative."I'm not on vacation, and I'm not waiting for you to collect me."I showed him the official seal."My academic record has been permanently transferred. I won't be returning to Kingsley for the next four years."Adrian's expression went completely blank. The velvet box slipped from his hand. The bracelet struck the floor wi

Once I left Kingsley, I quickly recovered my old rhythm.I'd spent most of the previous two years keeping Adrian's innovation center alive, but I'd never stopped reading the new work in autonomous navigation. Returning to research was difficult. It wasn't unfamiliar.Adrian sent message after message. At first, he still didn't believe I'd really left.[I'll give you a week to calm down. My driver will pick you up this weekend.][Apologize, and I'll restore all your team permissions. We can put this behind us.]I didn't answer. On the third day, he sent a screenshot of a reassignment order. Sienna had been demoted from co-captain to a volunteer position in the university archives.[I figured out what happened. She mixed your transfer request into my approval queue while she was organizing the files. She didn't know it was yours.][I've disciplined her. You've made your point, Claire. I took out my phone and called the Campus Safety Office. "Then we'll let the university decide."I hadn't planned to make any of this public. If Adrian intended to trap me with a disciplinary complaint, however, I had no objection to dragging every record into daylight. The call had barely connected when he snatched the phone from my hand and ended it. "Have you lost your mind?""I'm thinking clearly for the first time in months. I only want to know whether Kingsley's rules follow the system records or Mr. Hale's mood."He had never seen me refuse to give an inch. Panic finally broke through his confidence. After several seconds, he forced his voice to soften. "Fine. Enough. I understand that Sienna makes you uncomfortable. Starting tomorrow, I won't meet her alone. Is that what you want?" He moved closer, as if the crisis had already passed. "We'll settle our plans for after graduation too. Right away."He opened a message thread with an event planner and held out the screen."I've be

Adrian stood frozen.Sienna's eyes lit up. The corners of her mouth started to rise before she rearranged her features into concern. "Claire, you can't throw away your future because you're upset. You and Adrian have been together for--""Sienna, get out."For the first time, Adrian didn't let her finish.Sienna bit her lip. She told him softly not to lose his temper, then limped out of the room. The moment the door closed, Adrian's face hardened. "I've agreed to marry you, Claire. How far are you planning to take this tantrum?" He shoved the documents back toward me. "Take back the breakup. I won't recognize these forms, either. Delete the application now, and I'll pretend none of this happened."He spoke as though my future were a motion on his agenda, waiting for his veto.I felt something closer to pity than anger. If Adrian had become this arrogant, I'd helped him get there.Every time he offered me the smallest kindness, I'd taken the path he laid out and returned to him.
