chapter two

I didn't even have time to scream. Blood poured down like a river. My vision went entirely white, a high, piercing ringing filled my ears, drowning out the roar of the fire.

I crashed forward, my face hitting the stone, choking on the smell of my father's blood as it pooled toward my knees. The world blurred into a sickening smear of red. The man who had promised to protect us from everything was suddenly just a twitching corpse in the dirt.

Beside me, Caleb went insane. A guttural, agonizing roar tore from his throat—a sound raw with a young wolf's helpless fury. He thrashed frantically against the three guards pinning him down, his fingernails clawing uselessly at the stone,

"You monster! I’ll kill you! I’ll tear your throat out!" He shrieked.

One of the guard slammed a heavy boot directly into his spine, crushing his face into the dirt, but his chest kept heaving with broken, breathless sobs.

Ragged groan ripped out of my mother. She watched in absolute horror as my father's head rolled down the stone stairs. With, a raw animalistic shriek, she ripped her arms away from the guards and standing up on shaking legs. Blood that wasn't hers splattered her face.

She snatched a fallen sword from the ground and pointed it directly at the Alpha

"You son of a bitch! How dare you!" she screamed, lunging forward.

Kieran didn't even blink. With a casual flick of his wrist, he backhanded her with enough force to send her crashing into the stone.

"Take the girl," Kieran ordered, pointing a lazy finger at me. "And drag the rest to the cells."

Two warriors grabbed my arms, dragging me away from my broken family.

By the time we finally reached Nightbane's border, hours had passed. My feet were swollen and bleeding, and the heavy iron chains had rubbed my wrists down to the bone.

The massive wooden gates groaned open. The thumping of war drums hit my chest like a physical blow. The pack grounds were packed, lit by bright, roaring fire pits. Tables groaned under the weight of roasted meat, wine, and honey bread. Warriors stood shoulder to shoulder, their bodies stamped in ash paint to celebrate their victory.

The crowd cheered wildly, drinking toasts to my father's severed head, which now hung prominently by the main wall.

One by one, the conquering warriors were called forward to the platform.

"Korein—you held the line. Take this pelt."

"Vex—three killed at the East Gate by you. Take this dagger."

The crowd roared, throwing flowers and pouring wine over the warriors' heads. Women danced with silver blades spinning above their heads, singing loud songs of Nightbane's strength.

A heavy hand slammed into my shoulder. "On your knees for your Alpha."

Rourke, the brutal elite warrior, snarled in my ear. He yanked the chain so hard my teeth clicked together, and the metallic taste of copper flooded my mouth.

Kieran stepped onto the platform, holding my papa's severed head by the hair. "Princess of nothing," he mocked, looking down at me.

My veins burned with fire, and the growl building in my chest scraped against my raw throat. I wanted to leap up and rip out his throat, but the heavy chains holding me to the floor said otherwise.

Gathering all the saliva and hatred rotting in my throat, I spat.

The glob of spit landed squarely on his polished leather boots.

A collective gasp sucked the air out of the courtyard.

Curses erupted from the crowd, and Rourke’s fist flew up, ready to smash my face in.

"Enough," Kieran snarled. His voice carried the weight of an Alpha command, freezing Rourke in his tracks.

Kieran crouched down, bringing his face inches from mine until we were eye to eye.

"Do that again," he whispered, his gold eyes narrowing, "and I will let Rourke teach you exactly what respect means."

He stood up, turning his back to me to face his cheering pack.

"Blood Moon's Alpha is dead! Their warriors proved to be cowards! We have taken their Princess, and we have brought our peace!"

Deafening cheers shook the night air.

The pack priest stepped forward, his hands trembling as he offered a ceremonial dagger and Kieran took it.

"I, Alpha Kieran of Nightbane, take this female as Luna—to keep, to hold, and to cage

Chapter Eleven: The Elders Spite—(I)Lyra’s POV“She told me to tell you that no matter what dress you wear, a stray dog will always look like a stray dog.” Her voice did not shake. She dropped those final words like hot coals into the quiet of the room.I pressed my palm flat against the cold stone of the center table. I forced the heat down deep into my chest where it could burn out of sight. I would not let them see me break, I thought.“I’m sure you will win, Luna. I believe in you.”After eating, she helped clear the dishes and the remaining leftovers, leaving the room quiet so I could sleep.Left alone in my bedroom, I began to feel restless. The silence of the walls offered no comfort. I imagined how Mara’s face was going to look tomorrow. The anxiety coiled tightly in my stomach, spinning endless threads of doubt. What if I don’t answer the questions correctly? What if something goes wrong?I lay down in my bed and tossed and turned, trying to sleep, but I couldn't stop seeing

Chapter Ten: The Rules of a QueenHer hands felt ice-cold against my skin as she helped me out of my sweat-damp nightdress."The purpose of this is to teach you how, where, and what a Luna does," Nira recited quickly, sounding like she had stayed up all night memorizing the words. "And the pack elders will test you in three days to see if you really fit the role. If you fail their test, they can reject you completely. If they reject you..." She didn't finish the sentence."Who are the elders?" I asked, my voice still hoarse from sleep."They are the Alpha's extended family," she replied, carefully lacing up the back of the grey dress she had chosen for me. It was a plain dress with long sleeves and a high collar that scratched uncomfortably against my throat. "His uncles. His great-aunts. His father's cousins. They run the Nightbane pack with strict blood law. And they hate outsiders more than anyone. Especially anyone from Blood Moon."By mid-morning, the lesson was in full swing. Th

  • CAGED BY THE ENEMY ALPHA    Ghosts at dawn

Chapter Nine: Ghosts at Dawn"Sister, please. Let's go home. I miss Papa, Mama, and you."It was Caleb's voice. His words were small, breathless, and tumbling out too fast, like he was trying to outrun his own thoughts before they forced him to cry. That was exactly how he talked when he was terrified but trying his best to be brave for me."Let's go. Let's run away from here. These people are monsters," he pleaded, his little chest heaving up and down. His voice was thin and shaking, the exact way it always got when he tried not to show weakness in front of Papa. It had a heavy crack right down the middle."Yes, my daughter. Please, let's go. Blood Moon needs their Princess."Mama. Her warm, soft hands were suddenly on my face. She smelled like crushed rosemary and fresh bread from the morning kitchen. Her thumbs gently wiped my tears away just like she used to do when I fell from the tall training posts as a child."My Lady, how are you? I hope you eat well. Don't worry about me. I'

  • CAGED BY THE ENEMY ALPHA    the tables of enemies

Chapter Eight: The Table of EnemiesMy new room was not bad at all. It featured a large bed piled high with thick white furs and a real stone fireplace that threw orange, dancing light across the walls. There was even a glass window that looked out over the training grounds below, where shirtless Nightbane warriors were busy sparring with heavy wooden blades.Beside the bed stood a large wooden closet. But when I pushed the heavy doors open, I found absolutely nothing inside. No extra dresses, no leather armor, and no weapons. I was completely at their mercy.Looking out the window, a heavy wave of memory hit me. I remembered the afternoon of the attack, right before everything went wrong. I had peeped through my bedroom window back home and noticed something unusual moving in the tree line. But I hadn't raised the alarm. I had thought it was just a false alarm.Had I spoken up, I thought bitterly, maybe our soldiers would have been on high alert. Maybe my father would still be alive.

Chapter Seven: The Whispers of the FiveThe Council left Nightbane angrily and continued their meeting at Alpha Thorne pack For a long moment, nobody in the room even dared to breathe. The oppressive weight of Kieran’s terrifying Alpha aura still hung thick in the air, making it hard for any wolf left behind to draw a proper breath. The very stones of the hall felt heavy with his lingering anger.A brutal, bright red handprint was already rising on alpha thorne's throat where Kieran's fingers had choked him. He coughed violently, spitting a mouthful of dark blood onto the polished stone floor before he finally managed to push himself up. His gray-frosted temples were drenched in sweat, and his eyes were wide with a lethal mixture of deep humiliation and pure shock."He's unhinged," Thorne choked out, his voice nothing more than a raspy shred of what it used to be. He slammed a heavy fist onto the splintered wood of the table, making the broken pieces rattle. "He's completely lost his

  • CAGED BY THE ENEMY ALPHA    Mama

Chapter SixKieran was on Thorne in a blink. No one in the Great Hall even saw him cross the stone floor before his fingers locked tightly around Thorne’s throat. His sharp claws ripped right through the thick, decorated fabric of Thorne's collar, tearing the skin and digging deep into the muscle beneath. With a terrifying show of brute strength, Kieran lifted the massive Alpha a full inch off the floor."Say that again," Kieran whispered. The sound didn't come from his throat; it scraped through the silent room like a rusted blade dragged over ice. "Suggest you will touch my wife. I dare you ."Thorne’s hands clawed frantically at Kieran’s wrists. His thick fingernails dug into Kieran's arms, but Kieran didn't even flinch. Thorne’s face shifted from a dark red to a bruised, suffocating purple. His heavy boots kicked uselessly in the empty air, scraping against the stone steps. For a terrifying heartbeat, it looked like Kieran was going to snap his neck. The veins in Kieran’s hand bul
