"Halley, that's enough."
Aster yelled at her. He never thought that this young miss would react like this. She had pestered him before but later she stopped because he stopped coming to such parties. He thought that she had changed her target.
"Brother, how could you yell at me for an outsider?" She cried.
her tears glistened and she looked like a pitiful kitten. Lia almost wanted to clap for her acting skills. but Aster seemed unbothered.
Lia felt that the dramas weren't wrong. This crying, these similar dialogues, wow. Halley was the second female lead, right?
"Halley, I never liked you. Nor did my brother. You should stop this nonsense."
Halley then cried on the spot. The previous one was just acting but this was real. No matter what, having your heart broken hurts. But having your heart broken in front of everyone including your competitive peers and maybe enemies, it's just like death. Halley sobbed now. Lia almost felt sorry for her but she stopped that feeling because Halley still remembered to glare at her in between crying.
And all the other people looked at Lia like the culprit. Now this was unscientific, right? No one blamed Aster? She should be the most innocent one for being targeted like this. She didn't know all these entanglements. Aster was the one who yelled at Halley in front of everyone else. And he was the one Halley liked. It wasn't Lia's fault that he gave her money to act like his wife.
"Halley, go back."
A grandfather took her away.
She took a look at Aster's stern face and then left crying.
Aster was still frowning.
"Don't be sad."
He told Lia.
The people close to them were astonished. People in love are really blind. Which eye of his saw that Lia was sad? She was almost excited like a puppy watching the scene.
The lunch was grand. Lia had to eat many foods she hated. She didn't know hate at first sight could be still possible.
Aster smiled like a perfect gentleman.
When the guests all left, he undid his tie and slid down his seat.
"They take away all your energy like vampires."
She didn't see this. She saw him like a social butterfly fluttering among everyone. He didn't spare her from this. He took her everywhere and made her recite stuff from the book he gave her.
"Lia gives me surprise gift every day. She knows all my preferences. Yesterday, she bought me magoes. Today, apples."
"Aster, boy, those are your favorites."
"Yes, she also plays me music so i can rest while driving to work."
Gasps.
"I think he should be given flowers too. That's why I was planning to decorate his garden with rain lilies."
Lia also lied. She didn't know what flowers Aster liked. But she liked rain lilies. To watch. Particularly, she had no favorite flower.
She never thought he was acting. This superior skill of his should be used in the entertainment industry.
"Do you want to get out of here?"
He pulled Lia to a hidden grove. It was a small garden carefully hidden and you would need a keen eye to notice it.
"My mom used to sneak here whenever we went to such parties. My mother used to bring us here and leave my father alone. But I later realized that he knew this but still didn't say anything. He loved my mother so much that he took her family's debts on him and then died together. Love like that comes only once in a millennium."
He sighed. Lia didn't know how to comfort him. She didn't have any fond memories like that to share. All their family did was fight for food everywhere. Picnics, family outings, and even at home. She didn't remember much but when her father was gone, they stopped going out.
"Your parents? When did they die?"
"After my tenth birthday. My brother was eighteen then. He took over our group and made it this big. He also slowly erased the influence of the clan. Because my grandfather loved his family, they all had many rights. They were like wood eaters. Eating the place to live. My Brother was retaliated against by them many times. But still, we lived okay."
Lia didn't know what to say. As far as she knew, her family was okay. Her mother's side of the family was a boisterous bunch. They all looked to laugh. She thought her father lost his parents. They never talked about their paternal grandparents.
"My dad took us to the museum when he had a bonus. We loved eating the ice cream there."
She shared.
"Oh, chocolate Ice cream?"
"No, only my brother ate that. We preferred vanilla."
Aster nodded.
"Then how old were you when your father died?"
He asked. She knew he knew.
"I was nine. My brother was five. I only remember my mother crying every night. And my grandparents living with us. We all felt but no one talked. Even now we miss him like crazy. That's why we act like he is still there. We tell him everything. It's like he still eats with us and takes us to the museum, you know."
Aster nodded.
They sat like that talking about some trivial matters for a long time. The sky was dark and when they realized the time, Aster took Lia home.
"Ooo, who was that?"
Her brother teased.
"My boss. He was dropping all of us home. It was a team meeting, and it was late. So, he said it was his responsibility that we reached home safe."
It was true in a way. There definitely was a team meeting and Aster was also her boss.
"Did you eat, sweetie?"
Her mother asked.
Lia didn't want to lie to them but she had to. She wasn't exactly doing something nice. And her family would definitely punish her if they knew. But she felt that this could solve their problems.
Lia lay on her bed thinking about the day. It was a rollercoaster ride. She observed from a bystander's perspective and she felt that Aster was a little pitiful. Everyone there acted like they had a say in his personal life.
Is that how he lived? That's why he married her, a person out of that circle?
She didn't know but she felt she understood how really pitiful he was now as his brother was not with him.
In his words, he lost his parents when he was a kid. That time should be worse. Luckily his brother had controlled everything and now the same repeated. This time the kid was his nephew.
Was money and status so important that they didn't have basic humanity?
Lia fell asleep in a daze. She felt her brother searching for her chocolate stash but she didn't catch him in the act. She felt that she was lucky to have him. But where did she know that her unknowing act of kindness caused her a big problem later?
Aster visited his brother.
His brother lay there emotionless, in a coma. Aster had lied to Lia. His sister-in-law was also in a coma. They were injected with drugs before the accident. The person who did this didn't want them to live.
But God saved them.
Only he and Lia knew they were alive. He told Lia because he had a reason. He knew that she would eventually find out. He gave her trust so she would not betray him later.
He had actually known about her before she graduated. They were online friends. That's why he was happy to make her his partner.
"Brother, do you know, I'm married."
"You know her. She is the one who told me the programming idea back then. You wanted to hire her then but I said no. She is now very good. Very powerful. And by coincidence, she came into my life. I thought that maybe she could be my wife."Aster talked to his comatose brother but he did not reveal the entire situation. He knew that you should never talk about everything outright. What if the walls have ears? He was already facing many troubles and didn't want more of them to be added to the list.He then watched his brother lay still for a long time and then he visited his sister-in-law. Like his brother, she was also in a coma. He just told her to get well soon."Sister-in-law, I will get the kid back to me. No one can snatch him away in your absence."With this promise, he went back. The day was rather hard. He had to deal with the nosy chattering relatives and also some wealthy people in the group. They were like the melon-watching crowd who loved to know other people's family mat
Aster had put their little argument away because he had work to do. No matter how much he loved to watch movies, shows and read novels, work was the first priority at the moment. And now, he was to go and recruit some personnel. It was actually all planned by his brother and he kept working according to it.To be honest, he had no talent in this, managing the company was out of bounds for him. He went according to the plan and everything was going well. His brother had planned five years in advance. The technologies to be introduced and the economic changes were all listed. That's why the company was going in a straight line. There was obviously no increasing trend but thankfully no decreasing trend too. Otherwise, someday when his brother woke up and saw the bankrupt group, he would chase him with a stick.Aster: Come with me somewhere.Lia looked at the message and she was genuinely irked. She was making a website and an app to convert photographs to sketches and paintings accordin
"He was handsome. But again, breakups don't need reasons."Brothers are annoying creatures. He was talking nonstop about the coffee shop guy. Personally, Lia was all about gossip. But she was the person involved so she felt mildly guilty and faintly irritated listening to his chattering narration. She should be very happy to hear stuff about Aster considering how much he was working her constantly but it wasn't the case.Thankfully their mother was the epitome of perfect and she put a stop to this."You shouldn't talk about someone like this."She hit his head with a newspaper. Lia chuckled seeing his wronged look. She rolled her eyes at him. He wasn't getting any help from her. He was in for a long lecture anyway. His grades were falling way deep into the sea level. And he skipped the class today too. They were the polar opposites. She thrived in good grades and he loved not getting grades. He somehow managed to pass every grade. She thought that this was also a kind of talent. A pr
"My nephew Asher, he will be back in a week."Lia was in Aster's office listening to his schedule."That's good!"Aster nodded. "You know what that means?""No?""It means we should probably live together."Lia laughed. That was the best joke she had ever heard."I'm serious.""No, you are Aster. "Seeing that he didn't chuckle with her, Lia finally realized that something was wrong. Very wrong."You are not kidding?"Aster shook his head."That's really impossible. My family will not allow me to do this.""I know. That's why we need to find a way."They pondered many ideas."How about I leave after your nephew falls asleep and come up early in the morning?""A good idea. But he is not stupid. He will catch on layer. Or someone else will catch it."Yeah, Aster was probably in surveillance every moment."Then if I live with you, my family will catch on."Yeah, it was like a dead end."How about you live in my apartment building? You can leave whenever you want and come whenever you wan
"Mom, I think we should get an apartment. I want to buy one near my office and my lab. So, I can rest assured about you."It wasn't actually a lie. Lia had stayed most days at the lab so she didn't have to travel. And now she felt it would be good to get that apartment. It was really good. And she would still earn later. Then they could buy land."Yes, it's your money. You decide."Her mother had decided."But Mom-""Jake, next time you win the lottery, we will go with your decision. And your sister should have thought about this. I trust her."It's not every day that you find trust like this. Lia was so moved that she cried. She told them she would go see some apartments near the tech district. That place was the most developed one in terms of company headquarters and real estate. And Aster had a place there. It's cool, and she was not getting it for free. Also, Lia thought if things didn't work out in the end, she would sell the place. Someone would definitely buy. It's kinda a win
Lia ran away the moment she knew that her mother was planning to throw a welcome party. She didn't want to be recognized by the kid when she met him as his aunt. That would blow her cover. Also, she was being cautious. Because she was at home, someday she could slip up and jeopardize this entire operation. She wouldn't want that obviously because she would lose so much money.Aster was puzzled but he didn't say anything. She was being cautious and you couldn't say no to that."Where's your sister?"Jake looked left and then right. He got up from the sofa and searched the balcony, home office, and finally her bedroom. Lia wasn't there."Mom, she's not here.""I'm really fed up with you kids. You disappear when we unpack and she disappears when we have to host a party."Seeing his mother mumbling, Jake slowly reached out to eat a cookie on the plate kept aside. He was about to touch when he was hit with a spatula. He looked up and found his mother glaring at him. "It was worth a shot.
Trainwreck. This was a trainwreck. Asher had tears in his eyes as he gazed away from Lia. Lia who was a child king in her childhood was stumped at this development. She did nothing. It was a big mistake. She just entered the room and she tripped over a wire. Unfortunately, that wire was placed behind the card tower made by the kid. And it collapsed gorgeously. It all happened in slow motion. It was enthralling like the dominoes falling. And at the same time, Asher was about to cry."I don't like you."He yelled and ran away. Lia looked broken by her luck just now. This was a huge difference from what she witnessed and expected. She saw her brother charming this kid and herself disgusting him, probably. Lia wanted to cry.Aster didn't wake up from the fast chain of events unfolding before him. He didn't have time to utter a word or even a gasp.It was maybe the fastest worst first impression ever. And to top it the first impression was already made with a lot of prejudice."I'd bet
"I was worried about you."Lia told Aster when her call finally got through. "I'm fine now. I should be asking you. How are you? This should be the first time you faced something like this, right?""Yeah, it was unexpected. Does this happen to you often?"She was insanely curious."Want the truth or lie?""Lie.""This was the first time."Lia chuckled."I want to ask you something.""What?""You could get out of this. Such things will happen more and more and the danger will only increase. You could quit right now."Lia paused. She had to think about this. She didn't envision saying yes but she saw herself saying no. Maybe earlier she would not be willing to enter this den of thieves. But now, she saw him something as a friend. She didn't want him to fight this all alone."I just need you to protect my mom and brother. And also me. I can be your less involved partner.""Haha."Aster felt happy. He unconsciously didn't want her to accept this offer. The question posed itself again whe
