Ace hadn’t returned. It has been a week since he left for his trip. No text. No call. I have tried calling him a couple of times, but I couldn't reach him. I told myself it didn’t matter. We had rules: no personal involvement. That didn't stop me from checking my phone like a fool.

But I had work to do. It was my second day at Oceanic Group, and things were now serious.

I arrived at the executive floor by 8:30 a.m. I wore a cream blouse and a navy skirt. My hair was tied back, my makeup light. I wanted to look neat, not flashy. People still stared. I ignored them.

When I arrived at my office that morning, a woman stood near the assistant’s desk. She had black hair, wore red lipstick, and her face was unreadable, expressionless, and almost cold.

“You must be Gloria Bloom,” I said, stepping closer.

“I am,” she replied. “The human resources manager assigned me as your new personal assistant.”

“Welcome,” I said. “I hope we can work well together.”
