Chapter - 6

[ Madeline ]

“What? Have you lost your mind, Maddie?” My friend Ellie yelled at me as soon as I told her everything I had done in last few months.

“Yes, I am pregnant.” I nodded my head and sipped my juice comfortably with a satisfied heart.

“You’re pregnant and may I know who is the father and when did you get hooked? Oh My God! Why am I hearing this now?” Ellie ran her fingers through her hairs.

“I didn’t tell you because then you would stop me from doing this, Ellie.” I said and played with my ring.

“Maddie, why do I have a feeling that you did something crazy. Tell me, how did you get pregnant if you’re really pregnant.” Ellie asked me. She found it hard to believe me.

“Damien is the father.” I said with bitterness.

She spilled her coke and looked at me with wide eyes.

“What did you just say?” She exclaimed.

“You heard me right. My ex-husband is the father of my baby.” I told her the secret I had been keeping from everyone.

“Maddie, tell me that you’re joking because it doesn’t make any sense to me. You’re talking about the Rosewoods, I am sure they won’t allow your shadow to cast upon them. Carrying your ex-husband’s baby sounds impossible to me.” She said.

“I am pregnant with his child but they think that I am their surrogate who is carrying Damien and his wife’s child.” I smirked and her face again welcomed a horrified look.

“Madeline, what are you talking about? I am not getting a word you said. What kind of stupid game you’re playing?” She looked serious.

“I can never forget the humiliation and mental torture I endured, Ellie. They forced me to leave just because I couldn’t produce a child. They labelled me as barre but I was never barren.” I said bitterly but my heart ached as I rewind those days I spent as the wife of Damien Rosewood.

“Madeline, why do I have a feeling that you have a lot to tell me?” She held my hands and squeezed them to comfort me.

I smiled sadly and wiped the lone tears that rolled from my eyes, “I was never barren. It was a dirty trick played by Damien’s mother and Rachel Parker. They used to give me some kind of medicines which hindered my fertility and didn’t let me conceive. Mrs. Rosewood also paid the doctor to prepare a false report that I can’t conceive which led to my separation with Damien.” I told her.

“Oh My God! Madeline.” Ellie hugged me and I broke down in her arms.

“I accepted my fate when our divorce got approved until one day when the doctor called me and asked me for forgiveness. She told me everything and since then, I vowed to take back what was cruelly snatched from me.” I said.

“And you took the help of the same doctor when Mrs. Rosewood played the same game with Damien’s second wife? I mean she also failed to become a mother. It can’t be a mere coincidence. Mrs. Rosewood wants Rachel Parker as her daughter-in-law.” I said.

“Why can’t that stupid man see his mother’s conspiracies? Madeline, don’t tell me that you still have feelings for him. If he had ever loved you, he’d not leave you for anyone.” Ellie reminded me of the most bitter truth.

“Yes, I know and I am going to make him realize what he has lost by leaving me.” I said as a smirk played on my lips.

“What is going in your evil brain, Maddie?” She asked with narrowed eyes.

“Wait and watch, Ellie. I can’t tell you much right now. I am going to make him fall in love with again and then…” I stroked my still flat belly, “I’ll play the same cruel game with him. This time, it’ll hurt him the most because I’ll take his child away with me.”

“Woah! You sound like an evil witch, Madeline. I just hope that you won’t fall in love with him and get your break again. Think again, Maddie. This is a fatal game.” Ellie warned me of the consequences of my choices.

“I have suffered for years, both in my marriage and after our divorce, my resolution isn’t weak, Ellie. This time, I’ll play this game with my rules.” I said confidently and rose to leave.

“You’re going to live with him under the same roof where his wife lives. I can’t even imagine the awkward circumstances.” Ellie dragged my suitcase for me.

“Don’t worry, Ellie. I know how to take care of my mental health. Ava is just a pawn in their dirty conspiracies. The Rosewood family forced her parents to sign an agreement before they got married and she doesn’t love Damien. She’s with him because the contract terrorizes her.” I told her.

“Still, you are his first wife and now you’re their surrogate. I mean they don’t know the truth about your baby, it’s not Ava’s.” She said.

“I’ll handle the situation, Ellie. Now wish me luck. I am going to live my past as my present and future.” I said.

“You can always count on me. But be extra careful. As far as I can calculate, Mrs. Rosewood won’t digest her greatest defeat. She’ll definitely try to make your life challenging there. She may harm your baby as well. Revenge or not, it’s your baby as well, Maddie.” Ellie warned me and I touched my belly.

“As far as I hate the father of my baby, I’ll do anything to protect my baby from those evil people.”

“Your destination has arrived. Best of luck, Madeline, I wish you get back what is taken from you.” Ellie hugged me before I stepped out of the car and stared at the house I once built with my devotion and love.
