Chapter: 73: people from the past

Elena

I sat dazed at the sight before me. The big desk, the high-rise view, and the large spacious office. I had resigned from Harrington Enterprises' second branch all to leave Damien, not knowing what my next course of action would be. To run away again?

But who would have thought an opportunity would offer itself to me? My dad had called me back to take charge of the family company. He fell ill and tried apologizing for how he treated me in the past but I wasn’t going to let him off so easily.

After meeting Edmund that night, I explained what was on ground to Jenna and decided to come back to see my father. I agreed to take over the company because it was my only way to make something for myself. I noticed my father and stepmother weren’t on best terms which made me realize that he didn’t choose Cassandra to take over from him because he feared she could get influenced by her mother which left only me as the last option.

Chapter: 80: Sleeping BeautyCornellMy day couldn’t have turned out any better when I saw Elena at my doorstep. Despite the attitude I had on I was happy to see her there smiling at me even though her smile was short lived. My heart sank as I saw her limp body headed for the floor. My body moved on automatic, grabbing her so she fell on me and not on the floor. Her face had grown pale. “Elena.” I tapped her lightly to get her to wake up but nothing.I lifted her up to my room gently placing her on the bed. “Sam,” my voice echoed through the apartment. In minutes he appeared before me. “Boss.” Sam was my right hand man who never left my side. I met him when I went abroad to study. After saving his life, he devoted himself to me. “Call the family doctor, immediately.”“But boss she’s not a member of the fami—“ the words left Sam’s mouth but my glare shut him up before he could finish. “I’ll call him right away.” He bowed his head apologetically before leaving the room.I sat be

Chapter 79: plan coming togetherThe building smelled of mildew and dust, its walls lined with cracked paint. Dim overhead lights flickered, giving the space an eerie, half-abandoned feel. It was the kind of place that one could step in and never return—or make deals they never wanted traced. Sophia stood by the floor to ceiling curtained window, her face hidden beneath a silk scarf and sunglasses, like a statue with a glass cup in hand, she waited in silence. The door creaked open behind her, letting in two men in black suits and a man who looked like he had peed his pants between them.“We have him,” one of her men said from the hallway.A smile crept up Sophia’s face. “Look who we have here,” she said softly, turning to face the men who walked closer. Luther’s eyes darted around the room, sweat on his brow. He nervously clutched the folder in his hands. You can leave us,” Sophia said. Her men left without question, shutting the door behind them.Luther stood stiffly, trying to

Chapter: 78: Welcome GiftsElena It took three days and several cups of strong coffee, but I was finally standing in my new apartment—a pristine, modern space nestled in one of the city’s luxury buildings. High ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, marble countertops… it was just what I was looking for.I sank into the couch, staring out at the skyline, but my mind kept wandering back to my meeting with Cornell. Even now, I could still hear the sharp edge in his voice as he threw my words back at me. This project was too big to let my personal matters ruin it so I tried to pacify him, redirecting our conversation back to the project proposal. He hadn’t been cruel, just… stern. Unyielding. Every point I made, he challenged. Every suggestion, he countered, making me double down on my explanations. When I tried to ask for confirmation on the deal, he calmly pushed the final decision to “another day.” If he was trying to get under my skin, he most definitely succeeded.I didn’t push the m

Chapter: 77: Important Client ElenaIt’s been one week since my hunt for an apartment started, and I still hadn’t gotten anything to my taste. Having to still be under the same roof as Cassandra ruined my mood every morning. And the work I had to do at the office was starting to stress me out. The company’s next project was to branch out into theme parks. My father envisioned it as the next big step for Kingston Enterprise. We needed investment and the right company to take charge of the construction of the park, which resulted in the deal he was still negotiating with the Grey’s Construct Group.Grey Enterprises was the next big company after Harrington Enterprises, everyone knew they had been rivals since the dawn of ages, both businesses trying to outdo the other. I was shocked, to say the least, when I found out my Father was able to get the Grey's attention.A knock came in. “Elena!” I heard Ethan’s voice.“Come in,” I responded, getting up from my chair. “You’re going to be l

Chapter: 76: clear as day Elena A sharp cry followed, then another grunt. I followed the noise, my heart pounding as I rounded the corner. The sight before me sent a chill down my spine. My eyes landed on Cassandra standing over the nanny, her hand raised then followed by a sounding slap to Helen’s cheek. While Lily cowered behind her, her small hands clutching the fabric of the nanny’s dress. Rage surged through me as I stormed closer. What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” My voice sliced through the tension like a blade. Cassandra flinched at the sound of my voice but regained her composure immediately. “I’m only disciplining this mischievous brat of yours,” she said boldly looking at Lily and then at me. “Mmommyyy,” Lily sobbed as she came running to me, her face covered in snot. I took her into my arms cradling her to calm down. It took every ounce of me not to pounce on Cassandra at this very moment. “What gave you the idea that YOU had the right to dis

Chapter: 75: loud cries Elena A soft weight pressed against my side, followed by bouncing and a tiny, warm hand patting my cheek. “Mommy… wake up,” Lily’s sweet voice whispered, her warm breath grazing my cheeks. I groaned, burying my face deeper into the pillow. “Sweetie, can’t you let mommy sleep some more,” I mumbled out. Suddenly came a bounce on my stomach. “Lily!” I gasped, my eyes flying open. “Are you trying to send Mommy to the afterlife?” She giggled, grinning down at me, her hair a total mess from sleep. It’s Saturday, Mommy!” she declared, tugging at both my cheeks. I blinked, my brain catching up. Right. Saturday. No work, no school run… technically, I could sleep in. “I know, sweetie, which means we can stay in bed a little longer,” I murmured, pulling the covers over my head. “Mommy! I’m hungryyyy,” she whined dramatically, dragging out the last word. I sighed. Stretching my hands to the landline on my nightstand, I dialed the maids in the m
