LOGINChapter 5: unwanted help
Elena’s POV The air felt still as I met the man's eyes, they were filled with concern but I had the faint thought that he was mocking me somehow. “Elena,” Jacinta whispered, nudging me. “Don't mind it, I'll pay okay?” She glanced at the man, an unfriendly look in her eyes. “I…” I was about to speak when the man spoke up. “I can't stand by while Mrs Landon is in a fix can I?” the man said smoothly. He turned to the waiter, “I'll be covering their bill.” “No thanks, but thank you,” Jacinta butted in, taking out a credit card from her bag. “We can handle ourselves.” My tongue felt tied as I watched them bicker amongst themselves, I wanted to say something but what? The man frowned in displeasure. “I'm trying to help Mrs. Landon here, not you. Why don't you skimper off to the side and allow me to do what I need to do,” his tone was filled with mockery as he stared at Jacinta. I narrowed my eyes, about to speak up for Jacinta but a sudden hush filled the environment and everyone's eyes seemed fixed on something behind me. “I don't remember telling you my wife needed any help with her bill Mr Mcgregor,” a quiet voice cut through the silence. What! My heart skipped a beat as I heard that familiar voice. I whirled around, and there he stood, his features remained as cold as ever. Damien. What was he doing here? My breathing hastened as I stared at him, shocked at his sudden appearance. “I…” Mcgregor stuttered, his face becoming pale and he didn’t dare meet Damien’s eyes. “You see… I thought Mrs Landon might need some—” “She needs nothing of the sort,” Damien interrupted coldly, his eyes glaring at Mcgregor. “My wife needs no help with her bills, and if she does…” Damien’s eyes brushed over me. “I'll consider firing you to free up some cash.” Mcgregor’s lips quivered and all his aura seemed to melt away, leaving him bare. “I'm sorry sir,” he began, his eyes pleading. “I didn’t intend—” “Leave,” Damien snapped again. He stood there, almost relaxed as he uttered the command like a royal decree. “The sight of you disgusts me.” “Yes sir,” Mcgregor nodded without hesitation, he even looked a tad relieved. He paid the waiter immediately and turned to leave, I watched by the side, awestruck. Jacinta looked no different, if anything, she looked spooked like she'd seen a ghost. I was about to speak to her when Damien’s voice echoed again. “Empty the restaurant,” Damien uttered coldly, this time his gaze was on the waiter. I half expected the waiter to argue but Damien’s words were met with indifference. “Yes sir,” the waiter nodded. He turned to the face of the entire room. “I'm sorry but I'll have to ask everyone to leave. I apologize for whatever inconveniences this might have caused and as a token of goodwill, all costs incurred are on the house.” A wave of murmurs went through the crowd of people gathered but they slowly got to their feet, leaving one after the other. Their earlier looks of scorn and ridicule had changed, as they left they stared at me with hints of respect, curiosity and fear. I stared, dumbstruck as the events seemed to happen around me. It wasn't until the last person walked out I remembered to let go of the breath I'd been holding. “Are you okay?” Damien appeared in front of me, his hand brushing a stray curl of hair, tucking it behind my ear. Despite myself, I felt a bittersweet taste in my mouth. “Yes—yes, I am,” my tongue tangled into knots and I could feel my cheeks heating up. “Thank you,” I whispered, finally looking up at him. “It's fine,” Damien’s soft eyes hardened once again and he stepped back away from me. “Good evening sir,” Jacinta greeted from beside me, her demeanor was stiff as she stared at Damien. “You,” Damien paused, furrowing his brow as he stared at her. “Have we met?” he finally asked. ‘Met?’ My eyes widened as I glanced between the two of them. How could Jacinta be familiar with Damien? She'd arrived in the city barely two weeks ago. Was that how she'd found out about my marriage with Damien? My mind spun with thoughts and unanswered questions as I stared at the both of them, waiting for an explanation. “Yes,” Jacinta nodded, her trademark smiley face gone. “You interviewed me last week,” her eyes strayed to me for a brief instant. “For the position of receptionist.” I didn't know when I exclaimed; “What!” Her words startled me and my mouth fell wide open. Jacinta had been talking all about the job she'd gotten and yet it turned out to be Damien’s company? The twist caught me unawares and for a moment all I could do was gape at the both of them. “Ohh,” Damien’s face didn't have any strange reaction. “I'll have a word with Elena, excuse us,” Damien’s tone left no room for rebuttal. “Yes sir,” Jacinta nodded, she gave me a strange look as she walked out, leaving me and Damien alone. My heart thudded as I stood before Damien, unsure what to expect. It was totally out of my expectations that Jacinta would end up being an employee of his. I didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing. “What happened here?” Damien finally spoke, his tone was biting. “I let you out of the house just once and what do you do? Attempt to disgrace me?” “That’s not—” his words pierced through me like a dagger but before I could speak up he interrupted me. “Today was supposed to be a test Elena,” he stared at me, his eyes cold and unfeeling. “Yet you failed,” he snapped, his words made me jolt. “You're lucky this marriage alliance is a mutually beneficial one,” Damien’s words were cold and unrelenting. He didn’t say another word before he turned on his heel and left, leaving me alone.
CHAPTER 88The conversation..ElenaWaking up on my bed gave me a deja vu feeling… the type that makes you feel as though you woke up in the wrong place. I gasped once I realized that I was in my bedroom and, more importantly, when I saw Lily lying next to me, snoring peacefully. My heart beat picked up in rhythm, as bits and pieces of my memory came flooding back. For a moment, I could have sworn that I was being cornered by a car and some scary, mean-looking guys on the road, but all of a sudden… here I was.I sat up on the bed, careful not to jostle the beddings too much, so I didn't wake Lily up.Once I sat up, I realized that the clothes I wore were different from the ones I had worn to the hospital, which got me thinking…Was it all just some bad, awful dream?Or wasn't it?If so, then how did I get home?Or get changed?Confused, I stumbled out of bed and wandered down the living room only for me to come to a stop when I spotted Helen opening the door
CHAPTER 87Attack.Elena My shoes slapped on the tiles as I left the hospital. I was so distracted and caught up in my thoughts that I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings. I walked over to my car, parked on the other side of the road, opened it up, and got in.It wasn't until I pulled onto the highway that the tears started rolling down my cheek, blurring my vision. So many thoughts flood my mind, most of them centered around Damien and Sophia, and well…their baby.I'm still in shock.Sadly, I got so caught up in my head that I didn't realize that a car had been tailing me for a long time, waiting for the right opportunity to strike.Unfortunately for me, it came sooner than I thought.Just when I was turning the corner of a lonely road, a dark blue sedan sped up and cut me off at the edge.Instantly, I snapped out of the funk I was in, my eyes widening in surprise. “What the hell?” I muttered under my breath, squinting at the car while pressing my h
CHAPTER 86They're Pregnant!Elena I spent a few more minutes, fluffing my hair in front of a mirror, my eyes straying over the outfit I had picked out for the hospital visit. It was casual enough —a leather jacket thrown over a sundress, paired with sunglasses and a strappy sandal to complete the look.I tried hard not to think about what I was doing so instead I focused on something else.Cornell.Contrary to what he thought in the hotel, nothing happened between us as I seized the opportunity to ask some very urgent questions of my own. Like, where the hell did he disappear off to?I didn't know what I was expecting, but a part of me didn't think he would open up and tell me the truth, but he did. The sexual tension between us got steered into a night-long conversation where we both talked…deeply. He explained why he left so suddenly.According to him, his uncle, who was the owner of the company, practically forced him into taking ownership, and at that peri
CHAPTER 85Surprise!Elena We walked in, our clothes damp from the rain.I looked around, noticing the hotel was in good shape. It wasn't as glamorous as a five-star hotel but it wasn't shabby either.I stepped back a bit so Cornell could take the lead, and once he did, he walked in, had a brief conversation with the receptionist, and she handed him a key after confirming our reservation.“You go ahead, I'm waiting for something,” Cornell tells me, handing over the key. “I'll join you soon.”I wanted to ask what he was waiting for, but then I realized that was none of my business, so I grabbed the key out of his hand and headed for the elevator.Luckily for me, room 304 was the first room on the third floor. The moment I got in, I stripped out of my wet clothes, strolling to the bathroom.I carelessly tossed a bag in the sitting room, humming softly. The items I had purchased from the convenience store were placed on the counter.Toothpaste, sponge, a bar of soap,
Chapter:84: The storeElenaBefore I could say a word, he bent slightly and swept me into his arms. I couldn’t protest.“Cornell!”“Your heels will sink into the mud,” he said, as if it were the most logical thing in the world. “I’m saving you from an untimely fall.”I wanted to argue. I should’ve argued. But there was something oddly warm about the gesture, despite the chill from the rain. He carried me the rest of the way to his car. The rain still managed to seep into my clothes though Cornell had covered me with his jacket. It was when I settled into my seat and Cornell got into his that I noticed how his wet shirt had stuck to his skin, showcasing his toned muscles. I just sat admiring the sight before me till he turned to look at me. Thinking I had been caught staring I was about to come up with an excuse when he asked that I fasten my seatbelt. The ride back wasn’t the smoothest as the rain’s downpour became heavy. Cornell still tried maneuvering our way through the rain stor
Chapter:83: far away ElenaI stumbled back, nearly dropping my tablet.Cornell only smirked, a slow, deliberate curl of his lips that promised this was far from over.“Do my lips entice you that much,” he said with a satisfied expression on his face. But before I could say anything the elevator doors swung open. Grabbing my hand again he led me out. Luckily the office ground floor was half empty and there were few eyes seeing us make our way out. “Where are we going?” I asked, stumbling slightly in my heels as he led me toward the glass doors.“To dinner,” he said, not even glancing back.“Dinner where? That wasn’t just some figure of speech?” I asked, jogging to match his strides.“You’ll find out when we get there.”We got to the parking lot, leaving my hand, he got ahead and opened the door of his sleek black Mercedes for me, gesturing with his head, “Come on, get in.” I sighed dramatically, slipping into the passenger seat. “This had better be worth the suspense.” He chuckle
