The west wing was quiet, cloaked in the kind of stillness that made every creak of the floorboards sound like a confession. The light filtering through the old glass windows cast soft shadows across the room. Kael lay on his stomach, legs kicking in the air as he flipped through his picture book, muttering the names of animals under his breath. Sara was sitting by the foot of the bed, humming a lullaby as she braided her doll’s frizzy golden hair with remarkable focus.
