The words refused to make sense.

I read them again, slower this time, as though changing the speed would somehow change the meaning, my fingers tightened around the photograph until the edges dug into my skin.

"What is this?"

Adrian didn't answer.

I looked up. He wasn't looking at the words anymore. He was looking at the woman's hand. His face had gone completely still not shocked nor confused. Recognition

"You know that ring."

His eyes lifted to mine.

"I've seen it before."

"Where."

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN: THE MISSING PIECE

I stared at Adrian's message for a long time.Five words, that was all, but five words from Adrian Knight were never just five words, they were calculated, weighted, sent at a specific moment for a specific reason, and the fact that he was asking where I was right now, at this exact hour, after everything that had happened in this building, meant one of two things. Either he was worried or he already knew. I put the phone face down on the table without answering and looked at Marcus."Sophia took part in the recording.""It looks that way.""Which means she knew this building existed.""Yes.""Which means she knew about the network, about Eli, about everything dad built.""She made a promise to him directly, it would make sense that he told her enough to be useful, he needed her close to you and functional, not operating blind."I stood and crossed to the device, picked it up, turned it over in my hands, the empty compartment sitting open like a mouth that had already said the most d

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY SIX: HER NAME

"Sophia."The name landed in the sealed room like something physical, like a door closing on everything I thought I knew, I sat with it for three full seconds before my mind caught up with what my body had already understood the moment I heard her voice on that recording.Sophia.My best friend, my loudest defender, the person I had called from a cold street with a suitcase and a broken marriage and nowhere else to go, the person who had held me while I fell apart and put me back together and told me I was going to be fine, the person who had been exactly where I needed her every single time for three years. She had made that promise to my father before I was old enough to remember his voice.Marcus was watching me, his expression carrying the particular weight of someone who had known this was coming and had found no way to prepare for it anyway."How long have you known.""Tonight.""Tonight.""I suspected before, small things that never quite added up, but the recording confirmed i

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY FIVE: MY FATHER'S VOICE

I didn't open the door immediately.I stood with the key in the lock and listened, because whatever was on the other side had been waiting long enough that thirty more seconds wouldn't change anything, and rushing into a room where someone was already waiting was exactly the kind of decision that ended things before they could begin. The creaking had stopped.Silence now, complete and deliberate, the particular silence of someone who had heard me stop moving and had stopped moving themselves, two people on opposite sides of a door listening for each other, and I understood in that moment that whoever was inside already knew I was here.I turned the key and pushed it open slowly. The room was smaller than the one downstairs, no window, just four walls and a low ceiling and the airlessness of a space sealed for a long time, a single lamp on a table throwing pale light across everything, and sitting in the chair beside it, completely still, watching me with an expression I hadn't seen on

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY FOUR: THE FIGURE IN THE GLASS

I didn't turn around.Every instinct told me to, every nerve in my body fired at once, but I sat completely still and kept my eyes on the phone screen and the reflection caught in the east facing window, studying the figure standing in the doorway without letting them know I had seen them.Tall, still, watching me.Not moving, not speaking, just present in the way people were present when they had been waiting long enough that patience had become something physical.I set the phone face down on the table slowly, the way you set things down when you needed your hands free without announcing it, and breathed once, measured and quiet."How long have you been standing there."Silence.Then footsteps, unhurried, crossing the old floor toward me, I turned because turning was better than waiting, better than sitting with my back to something I couldn't see clearly, I stood and faced the doorway and the figure stepping through it and something in my chest moved in a way I hadn't expected. A w

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY THREE: THE REAL BEGINNING

“This was the real beginning.”Five words in my mother's handwriting and the floor was still somewhere beneath my feet but I couldn't feel it, I just stood in the dim entrance hall of a building I had never consciously entered and stared at a photograph of myself holding hands with a man I wasn't supposed to have met yet.We looked young in it, younger than the charity event, younger than the marriage, younger than everything I had been told was the start of us, Adrian's face carrying an openness I had never once seen during three years of living beside him, something unguarded and unhurried and completely present, the face of a man who hadn't yet learned to keep the world at a distance. And me.I brought the photograph closer. I was smiling. Not the careful smile I had learned to wear in public during the marriage, not the smile that existed to fill silences at events where Adrian's colleagues looked through me like glass, something real, something that started in the eyes before th

  • CHASING THE WIFE HE FORCED TO DIVORCE    CHAPTER FORTY TWO: THE PROPOSAL HE FORGOT

My finger stilled against my empty hand.I looked down at it, that unconscious searching movement, the body reaching for something the mind had been told never existed, and something cold and enormous settled inside me because bodies didn't lie the way minds could be made to lie, bodies remembered things that had been taken without permission, things buried under years of careful manufactured forgetting.I looked up at Adrian. He was still staring at his hands, still wearing the expression of a man standing inside a memory he couldn't fully enter, something pressing against the inside of his mind that kept dissolving every time he reached for it, and I wanted to pull every fragment out of him before it disappeared again, but the note in my pocket held me back.Don't let Adrian remember before you do.I turned away and got into the taxi. The driver pulled into the empty street without being asked, either tired of waiting or wise enough to understand that movement was better than stilln
