Matteo’s POV

I was still pissed.

That was the simplest way to put it, though it didn’t even begin to cover the mess twisting in my chest.

Zara had a talent for doing that, slipping under my skin without permission, without effort, and leaving chaos behind. And the worst part was that I didn’t understand why it bothered me this much.

She was reckless, Immature. Angry at the world and determined to prove she didn’t need anyone. That alone should’ve irritated me in the mild, dismissive way most people did.

Instead, it set my teeth on edge.

I stood in the driveway, jacket pulled on with sharp, aggressive movements, replaying the image I couldn’t seem to shake off.

Her stumbling out of that building the other night. That damn boy’s hands on her. Too close, and too fucking comfortable.

I remembered the way my grip had tightened on the steering wheel as I watched from the car, the fury coming so fast and so violent it had surprised even me. I hadn’t thought. I hadn’t hesitated, when Marco called about her at the party.

I’d just moved. The memory of my fist connecting with his jaw still lingered in my knuckles.

And the look on Zara’s face when she realized it was me, shock, confusion, something dangerously close to relief before everything went dark.

That look haunted me.

“Boss.”

I snapped out of it and turned toward Marco, who stood a few steps away, careful not to crowd me.

“The car’s ready.”

I nodded once. “Coming!”

As I slid into the backseat, my jaw tightened again. I shouldn’t have gone after her that night. I shouldn’t have been watching the damn building like a territorial animal, waiting for when to devour.

I especially shouldn’t have cared. Yet there I was.

The drive to the warehouse was quiet, city lights streaking past the windows like fractured stars. My phone buzzed once. Then again.

But I ignored it. Tonight wasn’t about her. It couldn’t be.

The warehouse loomed ahead, unassuming on the outside, guarded heavily where it mattered. I stepped inside to find my men already gathered with faces serious, and voices low, tension coiled tight in the air.

“Sit,” I said, shrugging off my jacket and they did. Luca leaned forward first. “We’ve got a problem.”

I raised a brow. “I’m aware.”

“Shipments rerouted without clearance,” he continued. “Someone’s testing us everyday”

“Or trying to provoke us,” Enzo added and I nodded slowly, folding my arms. “Who benefits?”

“Not us,” Luca muttered.

As they talked, my mind should’ve been locked in, calculating, assessing, planning. But instead, it kept drifting to her.

To Zara’s voice when she yelled at me the day before that. Her accusation still rang in my ears.

I clenched my jaw trying to focus.

“Matteo,” Enzo said sharply. “You with us?”

“Yes,” I snapped, clearing my throat. “Keep talking.”

Luca shot me a look but continued. “We traced the movement. It points east. Smaller operation, but organized.”

“Names,” I said.

“Working on it.”

I leaned back in my chair, fingers tapping once against the armrest. Knowing too well that East meant risk and competition. Opportunists who smelled weakness. And weakness was something I couldn’t afford.

Yet all I could think about was how fragile Zara had felt in my arms when I’d carried her out of that alley. How light she’d been. How easily she’d trusted me without even realizing it.

It made my chest tighten almost too uncomfortably.

“This isn’t just business anymore,” Enzo said. “They’re pushing boundaries.”

“I’ll handle it,” I replied coldly.

“You sure?” Luca warned. “Because you seem distracted.”

The word hit harder than it should have and I shot him a look. “Watch your mouth.”

“I’m not challenging you,” he said quickly. “I’m stating a fact.”

Silence stretched and I exhaled slowly. “Finish the report.”

As they resumed, I forced myself to focus. Numbers. Routes. Names. Threats. This was familiar territory. This was where I was supposed to excel.

And yet— The image of Zara in that black dress flashed uninvited into my mind.

The way she’d looked that night. Nothing like the girl who dragged herself through university halls in oversized clothes and a defiant scowl. She’d been stunning and completely different. And I’m so sure that every eye in the room were drawn to her.

Including his. The damn boy…That realization made my stomach twist. Why did it bother me that other men noticed her?

“She’s not yours,” I muttered under my breath.

“What?” Enzo asked.

“Nothing,” I said, realizing I was still seated in my meeting with my men.

The meeting dragged on, decisions made, orders given. Still, my thoughts lagged, trailing back to the same place over and over.

Her laughter, her anger. The way she slammed doors like she wanted the world to hear her fury. That right then I hated how much space she occupied in my head.

I hated even more that part of me didn’t want to push her out.

“We’ll move tomorrow night,” Luca said finally. “Quietly.”

“Good,” I replied, standing. “Stay sharp.”

They nodded, rising as well. As I stepped outside, the cool night air hit my face, grounding me slightly in a pause. I pulled my phone from my pocket at last.

Realizing that I had just received a text from my mother. Typical of her to text at such late hours of the night.

I stared at the screen longer than necessary before locking it again knowing I just wasn’t in for her long talks and dramas tonight.

And then I finally concluded in my mind that all of what’s happening was a problem.

Not Zara’s behavior, that was manageable. The problem was me.

The way my anger flared too fast when it came to her. The way control slipped at every instant. The way lines blurred when it came to her.

She was my step-sister. She was off-limits. And yet when I’d seen that boy’s hands on her that night, all I’d felt was the urge to break something.

I leaned back against the car when I got in, exhaling. Affirming to myself that this had to stop.

Because if it didn’t— I wasn’t sure I’d recognize myself when I finally snap in front of her.

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 40

Matteo’s POVBy the time I stepped into the office, I was already irritated, not even because of the board or the Angelos. Not even because of Giovanni Russo’s audacity. But because of her. The way she walked past me this morning without looking at me. Like I was a mistake she didn’t want to even remember.I pushed the thought aside as the elevator doors opened and then the entire executive floor went silent the second I stepped out.“You’re early,” Luca called out from behind me.“I didn’t sleep,” I replied flatly and he didn’t comment on that either. We entered the main conference room where three department heads were already waiting.Financial projections lit up the screen in an instant. Red numbers. Declining margins, shipment delays. Insurance spikes. On entry I didn’t sit.“Explain what you mean,” I said as Marco cleared his throat.“The Naples route interruption has created a backlog. Three clients have requested renegotiation.”“Denied,” I said immediately.“They’re threateni

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 39

Matteo’s POVMy fingers still smelled like her. Sweet and dangerous but I walked out first.Because if I stayed another second, I would have forgotten every rule I’ve lived by.The hallway felt colder than it should have, too quiet for what had just happened. My footsteps were steady as I climbed the stairs. But inside? Chaos.I walked into my room and shut the door firmly behind me and then I locked it. It wasn’t even because I was afraid someone would come in, but because I needed silence.I went straight to the bathroom sink and turned on the water, letting the cold feel of the water run down my spine.I stared at my reflection as it ran as I tightened my jaw and I lifted my hand slowly but annoyingly her scent was still there, but a bit faint.Heat flashed through me again this time and I inhaled once. Then again, and before I could stop myself, my thumb brushed my lower lip unconsciously. And in that moment, I tasted her as a low exhale left me. I gripped the edge of the sink har

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 38

Zara’s POVI don’t remember who moved first. Maybe it was him. Maybe it was me. Maybe it was the space between us finally snapping. One second we were staring at each other like enemies standing across a battlefield. The next— His hand reaching for my waist. And my mouth was on his.It wasn’t soft this time. It wasn’t hesitant, felt more like a third-time collision. His lips crushed against mine like he’d been holding back for weeks and finally gave up pretending he didn’t want this. His glass slipped from his hand and shattered somewhere on the kitchen floor, but neither of us flinched.I grabbed his shirt, he grabbed my hips. And suddenly we were no longer standing still. We were devouring. His mouth moved against mine with hunger, real hunger not even the calculated control he always wore like armor.I felt it in the way he exhaled through his nose. In the way his fingers tightened almost painfully at my waist. His wounded hand, which I had noticed yesterday brushed my side and I g

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 37

Matteo’s POVI had just stepped into my study when my phone vibrated in my pocket. One vibration. Then came another. As I stared at my screen I realized it was a private line calling. And only three men I know used it in contacting me.I answered without greeting.“Yes.”Luca’s voice came through, tight. “We have a situation.”My jaw hardened instantly at the sound of that. Knowing there was trouble. “Define situation.”“There’s been movement at the docks. One of ours. He’s talking.”“Who?”“Rico.”My eyes went cold, Rico had been with us for more than six years. Handled shipments. Trusted routes.“If he’s talking,” I said calmly, “why is he still breathing?”A pause came from the other end of the call.“We wanted your word.” He said. And well of course they did. Because this wasn’t a minor betrayal. This was a crack in the foundation of what I’ve built. And cracks spread.“Where is he?” I asked.“Warehouse thirteen.”“I’ll be there in twenty.”I hung up. And just like that—The part

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 36

Zara’s POVThe music was loud again, almost too loud for my ears to handle. Bass vibrating through my bones, lights flashing red and blue across my skin, and smoke.I was back at the club. Back in that dress. Back in the heat of bodies and reckless laughter.Alex’s hand was on my waist again. But it wasn’t him I was looking at. It was Matteo.Standing across the room. Watching. His eyes were darker than the club lights, his expression clearer than the music, cutting through everything until there was only me and him and that unbearable pull between us.Alex leaned closer in the dream.“Relax,” he whispered against my ear. But Matteo’s gaze hardened in a possessive kind of way. I tried to move toward him. Or maybe away from him.But I couldn’t. The music warped. Faces blurred. Suddenly the club wasn’t the club anymore. It was the living room. The couch. Matteo’s hand on my waist. His mouth on mine. The kiss from the other night. The one I had pretended didn’t matter. The one I had repl

  • CLAIM ME, STEP-BROTHER.    Chapter 35

Matteo’s POVThe moment her footsteps disappeared upstairs, I moved. I walked straight out of the dining room and down the corridor toward my study, jaw locked so tight it ached. The door shut behind me with more force than necessary.I mean my father’s presence in my house was already an irritation. Her sitting at that table tonight made it worse. Because he had seen it. The tension. The cracks between us.And Theo Ferraro never missed weakness. The minute I walked in, I poured myself a drink I didn’t need. The glass trembled faintly against the crystal decanter. And then came a knock at the doorBut I didn’t answer and it opened anyway. Of course it did.“Still slamming doors like a child?” my father’s voice echoed calmly behind me, but I didn’t turn.“You didn’t announce your arrival,” I finally said.“I shouldn’t have to.”I took a slow sip of whiskey before facing him. “You enjoy theatrics.”“And you enjoy defiance.” He said and then stepped fully inside, closing the door behind
