ELEANOR’S POV:

Anderson nudged at me, but I couldn’t say a thing. He leaned in and saw where the function was holding— New York. The one city where I’d lost it all and hit rock bottom before this amazing man found me.

“It’s in New York. We could stay back and“—

“No.” I cut him off. I refused to be the one holding him back. After everything he was doing for me, including working tirelessly to clear my name, I couldn’t afford to be the one person who’d hold him back.

“We’ll go.” I could’ve sworn my voice cracked there, but that wasn’t just it. Immediately, the night everything had started flashed through my mind.

My plan for consummation, learning of my father’s death, seeing Robert get out of that car, the divorce, learning I signed it all away— every goddamn bad thing flashed through my mind like a bad dream, and I staggered, almost falling if Anderson hadn’t wrapped his arms around me to steady me.

I felt sparks travel through every single inch of my skin the moment I felt his touch. I pulled away instantly as I turned away from him. This was the closest we’d gotten physically since we got ‘married’. To everyone, we were the adorable married couple, and we tried to live up to that, but in private, we were just friends. Friends who worked together.

“I know it must be tough for you to return to New York, especially after everything. I’ve been preaching to you about moving on for some time now, but I really do understand if you don’t feel comfortable, and it’s fine. It’s step by step.” He told me as he planted his hand on my shoulder.

I gulped, my breath hitching. What on earth was going on with me? “Remember, Ellie, regardless of what happens, I’m always here for you.” That warmed me, and I smiled as I turned to him.

“I’ll get our plane tickets.” I told him, moving away as his hand came off my shoulder. I didn’t realise I was holding my breath till then. What sort of effect was this?

I ran my fingers through my hair as I hurriedly packed up. I was just stressed. The past few days had been hectic. That was it. That was all there was to it— it sounded like I was trying to make myself believe something that wasn’t real.

So far, the party was going well. Charity sections, donations, dances, drinking— so far, everything was going well, and I hadn’t been as scared or paranoid as I’d thought I’d be, but all this was because I knew I had Anderson by my side. My whole sense of comfort disappeared the moment he took the stage for his speech.

Turning to the side, I could’ve sworn I caught a glimpse of Robert, but when I looked again, he wasn’t there. I clenched my fists as I gulped my alcohol in a single go.

‘Stop imagining things, Eleanor. Robert’s not here.’

“… Many people assume I’m the mastermind behind every successful investment I’ve made, but then, there’s a saying: behind every successful man is a woman. Behind me is my dearest wife.” I felt every eye turn to me as I gulped, my heart racing as it thumped in my chest. “She convinced me to make that investment, and I’m so glad to see it grow. This success is as much mine as it is hers, so here’s to more success.” Everyone cheered, and I did my best to genuinely cheer, too. That was until I felt my skin crawl from the presence of the one who’d just come beside me, passing me the filthiest smile ever.

“You look stunning tonight, Elle.” In that raspy voice that I would once die for, my ex-husband, the bastard who’d ruined my life, smiled at me as he leaned in for a kiss on the cheeks, but I stepped away. I’d be damned if I let that sinner come near me.

“Excuse me.” I turned to leave, but he held my hand back, his eyes instantly turning to pleading ones.

“At least listen to me, Elle—“

“Eleanor. My name’s Eleanor.” I cut him off, doing my best not to show the disgust that was piling on my face.

The ribbon cutting was done, but Anderson was still up on stage. I didn’t want to do anything that’d ruin the moment, but this bastard—Robert—he was pushing me, and there was only so much I could do to restrain myself, especially now that he was holding on to my hand.

“I’ve missed you, El—Eleanor. Seeing you, all glamorous, your eyes glistening, you—“ once upon a time, I’d have killed to have Robert compliment me, but now, even his compliments felt like insults.

“Let go of me.” I murmured, trying to get free from him. I didn’t want to draw attention to us. Not at an event like this.

“Then just come with me. Please.” His voice reduced at the last word. “It’ll be quick. You know what effect you have on me, Eleanor. I’m dying to talk to you. Just five minutes. I only need five minutes to“—

I suddenly felt a hand on mine, and that hand seemed to cause Robert to shut the fuck up. Finally.

I raised my head to see Anderson, his side profile as marvellous as ever. Damn it. Focus, Eleanor.

“My wife said to let her go. Must she repeat herself, Mr Robert?” Anderson’s voice was so cold it sent shivers down my spine. How were these two even related?

“You should be ashamed of yourself. I’m your“— Before Robert could play the ‘I’m your nephew’ card, Anderson grabbed his hand, putting it off me as he pulled me to the side.

“You’re one to talk about being ashamed. Stay away from my wife, Mr Robert. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to cross the line.” This man was so different from the Anderson I used to chat with in conference rooms after our meetings were done.

This man was cold; his eyes looked so charming yet threatening. My gosh.

Robert nodded, taking a step back as he grabbed a glass of alcohol from the waiter, gulping it in an entire go. As he grabbed a fork, clinking the glass.

“Attention, everyone. I’ve got some important information. Something that’ll interest you all, so very deeply.” He announced in a loud voice.

He turned to Anderson and me in a threatening manner, but Anderson didn’t seem to be fazed.

“FME’s opening?” He scoffed. “I’ve got something that’ll interest the media more than that.” I felt my breath hitch.

ROBERT'S POVI stayed up all night to watch Beatrice. This was the worst thing I have seen myself doing; the spy I attempted to go after had gone so far that I didn't bother following..."I'm going to fish you out when I'm done babysitting." I smiled awkwardly."Sir?" I had drifted into sleep, and it was morning already."Oh, I'm sorry for taking up space." I was still unconscious of what was going on right now.I still needed enough time to rest; I got so really weak while babysitting."Are you okay, sir?" The doctor asked, trying to look into my eyes."I'm fine. Just focus on the target." I said to him and avoided contact with him."Oh well...." He turned to face her and did the necessary things."She is better now. Just need more rest, and please..." He snapped and walked us out of the room."When you want to do something like that next time, be careful and listen when she says stop. That might be the spot." The doctor cautioned so quietly that it sounded like a plea."I've... I've

ANDERSON'S POVI felt a sharp pain in my chest when I slowly opened my eyes and tried to lift myself up.Ouch! I groaned in pain. Was I supposed to feel so much pain in the hospital? I forcefully widened my eyes.I found out I wasn't in the hospital, and this house doesn't look like mine either. "Who is here?""Where am I?" I got up from the bed where I had lain down.Sonia came out of a corner holding a glass of wine in her left hand and another in her right. "I didn't expect you to be awake now, but here. Have a drink." She stretched her right hand and pointed the glass at me.My whole face went blank. I didn't know how to feel at that moment, Sonia."What am I doing here, and how did we get in here?" My eyes didn't drop into the glass of wine a bit.I got desperate for answers to the questions; every other thing was not important to me right now.She scoffed and put her hands down as she dropped the glass on the table."I was told you are hard to crack. I didn't expect much." Sh

Chapter 46ANDERSON'S POVI couldn't bear to hear that Beatrice almost took my wife's life. Though I don't want to get into this mess and throw shade at a little boy, I still had to act on that.It was so stupid that I had to act more like a thief because I needed this to be done on my own. I got out of the car and made enquiries to the little boy.Of course, he was going to cooperate because he saw the guns in my hands. With little or no time, I was out of there. I had a feeling to follow up on him, but that would not be necessary at this point. Escaping his sight and finding a way to get out of his stupid trap is what I am trying to do right now."I will find you and all your dirty work when the time is right," I whispered as I got to my car and drove away.Just when I thought I had escaped everything the day had to throw at me, Adam came in.He made all sorts of threats, which, at one point, got me scared, but I will never let him see that I was moved by that.I mean, I watched my

ROBERT'S POVThough the morning wasn't giving me the vibe I expected. Everything got so quiet, and Beatrice was still on the bed."What's keeping this lady asleep?" I got up to tap her out of the sleep. Beatrice didn't move an inch no matter how I tapped her. "Beatrice!" I called her several times."Is this a joke?" I shook her several times, and she didn't make a move.I remembered how vigorous I was with her, and she kept begging. Wait, this was all pleasure; what's the lying thing and not moving?"Beatrice." I am going crazy right now.She wasn't saying anything or even moving to show that she was still alive."Beatrice, please speak up. I am not ready for this." I made her lie flat on her back, and she wasn't still speaking.I had to prepare my car and rushed her to the hospital. "Get the gate!" I ordered from a distance.God, what's all this? I'm supposed to be doing something else and not running around to keep someone alive."Girl, please don't die on me." I placed one of m

ROBERT'S POVI didn't know how to feel when my dad told me about what happened that day. "Dad I thank you for what you did, but I don't think that is necessary." I sighed."What do you mean? Anderson is not someone to trust for any reason; he will take action anytime, anywhere." Dad got up pissed."I know. And I had everything under control; how did you even know that..." I stopped talking and sighed."I know you wouldn't want to tell me, so I had eyes on you just to make sure everything was going on smoothly. That was how I found out." Dad snapped.Oh no!"You have spies on me?""It is for your safety, son.""You make me feel like a puppet sometimes. I have everything under control; you are clearly showing that I can't fight for myself." The atmosphere steamed up.It is not a very nice one. I could tolerate everything my father does to me, but telling me that he had to confront his brother because of me – that's the peak of it."Puppet? I gave you 3 fucking months to bring down that

Chapter 43ELEANOR'S POVMy body froze when I fell on Anderson. My heart dropped, and I couldn't think of anything but who they shot. The world was so quiet at that moment that I could hear the birds sing from a distance. The sudden gushing wind brought memories to me, the way I cried when I heard my parents were dead. How everything happened, the pain I felt that day. Everything replayed in my head that moment.Anderson wasn't moving, I refused to open my eyes because I wasn't ready to see the disaster yet, and tears shimmered in my eyes. "Now that was an awesome display but next it's not going to be fake." Adam finally broke the silence.Huh?Maybe I didn't comprehend the information properly or could it be what I'm thinking?I opened my eyes and slowly looked up. I saw Anderson sitting up, he wasn't bleeding, not saying anything, not moving. He was just.....there."Anderson?" I shook him to be sure I wasn't hallucinating. He slowly turned to me and got up, he stretched his hands a
