ELEANOR’S POV:

Anderson nudged at me, but I couldn’t say a thing. He leaned in and saw where the function was holding— New York. The one city where I’d lost it all and hit rock bottom before this amazing man found me.

“It’s in New York. We could stay back and“—

“No.” I cut him off. I refused to be the one holding him back. After everything he was doing for me, including working tirelessly to clear my name, I couldn’t afford to be the one person who’d hold him back.

“We’ll go.” I could’ve sworn my voice cracked there, but that wasn’t just it. Immediately, the night everything had started flashed through my mind.

My plan for consummation, learning of my father’s death, seeing Robert get out of that car, the divorce, learning I signed it all away— every goddamn bad thing flashed through my mind like a bad dream, and I staggered, almost falling if Anderson hadn’t wrapped his arms around me to steady me.

I felt sparks travel through every single inch of my skin the moment I felt his touch. I pulled away instantly as I turned away from him. This was the closest we’d gotten physically since we got ‘married’. To everyone, we were the adorable married couple, and we tried to live up to that, but in private, we were just friends. Friends who worked together.

“I know it must be tough for you to return to New York, especially after everything. I’ve been preaching to you about moving on for some time now, but I really do understand if you don’t feel comfortable, and it’s fine. It’s step by step.” He told me as he planted his hand on my shoulder.

I gulped, my breath hitching. What on earth was going on with me? “Remember, Ellie, regardless of what happens, I’m always here for you.” That warmed me, and I smiled as I turned to him.

“I’ll get our plane tickets.” I told him, moving away as his hand came off my shoulder. I didn’t realise I was holding my breath till then. What sort of effect was this?

I ran my fingers through my hair as I hurriedly packed up. I was just stressed. The past few days had been hectic. That was it. That was all there was to it— it sounded like I was trying to make myself believe something that wasn’t real.

So far, the party was going well. Charity sections, donations, dances, drinking— so far, everything was going well, and I hadn’t been as scared or paranoid as I’d thought I’d be, but all this was because I knew I had Anderson by my side. My whole sense of comfort disappeared the moment he took the stage for his speech.

Turning to the side, I could’ve sworn I caught a glimpse of Robert, but when I looked again, he wasn’t there. I clenched my fists as I gulped my alcohol in a single go.

‘Stop imagining things, Eleanor. Robert’s not here.’

“… Many people assume I’m the mastermind behind every successful investment I’ve made, but then, there’s a saying: behind every successful man is a woman. Behind me is my dearest wife.” I felt every eye turn to me as I gulped, my heart racing as it thumped in my chest. “She convinced me to make that investment, and I’m so glad to see it grow. This success is as much mine as it is hers, so here’s to more success.” Everyone cheered, and I did my best to genuinely cheer, too. That was until I felt my skin crawl from the presence of the one who’d just come beside me, passing me the filthiest smile ever.

“You look stunning tonight, Elle.” In that raspy voice that I would once die for, my ex-husband, the bastard who’d ruined my life, smiled at me as he leaned in for a kiss on the cheeks, but I stepped away. I’d be damned if I let that sinner come near me.

“Excuse me.” I turned to leave, but he held my hand back, his eyes instantly turning to pleading ones.

“At least listen to me, Elle—“

“Eleanor. My name’s Eleanor.” I cut him off, doing my best not to show the disgust that was piling on my face.

The ribbon cutting was done, but Anderson was still up on stage. I didn’t want to do anything that’d ruin the moment, but this bastard—Robert—he was pushing me, and there was only so much I could do to restrain myself, especially now that he was holding on to my hand.

“I’ve missed you, El—Eleanor. Seeing you, all glamorous, your eyes glistening, you—“ once upon a time, I’d have killed to have Robert compliment me, but now, even his compliments felt like insults.

“Let go of me.” I murmured, trying to get free from him. I didn’t want to draw attention to us. Not at an event like this.

“Then just come with me. Please.” His voice reduced at the last word. “It’ll be quick. You know what effect you have on me, Eleanor. I’m dying to talk to you. Just five minutes. I only need five minutes to“—

I suddenly felt a hand on mine, and that hand seemed to cause Robert to shut the fuck up. Finally.

I raised my head to see Anderson, his side profile as marvellous as ever. Damn it. Focus, Eleanor.

“My wife said to let her go. Must she repeat herself, Mr Robert?” Anderson’s voice was so cold it sent shivers down my spine. How were these two even related?

“You should be ashamed of yourself. I’m your“— Before Robert could play the ‘I’m your nephew’ card, Anderson grabbed his hand, putting it off me as he pulled me to the side.

“You’re one to talk about being ashamed. Stay away from my wife, Mr Robert. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to cross the line.” This man was so different from the Anderson I used to chat with in conference rooms after our meetings were done.

This man was cold; his eyes looked so charming yet threatening. My gosh.

Robert nodded, taking a step back as he grabbed a glass of alcohol from the waiter, gulping it in an entire go. As he grabbed a fork, clinking the glass.

“Attention, everyone. I’ve got some important information. Something that’ll interest you all, so very deeply.” He announced in a loud voice.

He turned to Anderson and me in a threatening manner, but Anderson didn’t seem to be fazed.

“FME’s opening?” He scoffed. “I’ve got something that’ll interest the media more than that.” I felt my breath hitch.

ELEANOR'S POVAnderson must have thought that sending the message would reduce the tension that I was feeling here, but the opposite of that just happened."I need to get to them; he is not picking up the phone." I reached out for my phone."No, you don't have to do anything. Maybe they are in a tunnel or corner or something. You don't want to distract them, do you?" Sierra held down the phone, her eyes gesturing that I should release the phone."I just...""Shush, I understand, but you have to also think about their safety. Trust me, they are fine; Evan would never go alone. Anderson is fine," she assured me.All my time, I spent it thinking about what would become of me if they didn't make it back."Eleanor? Are you okay up there?"A little rest upstairs became a problem for Sierra. There was no chance for me to think; she wanted to see me all the time, and I didn't think I was ready for that."I'm fine. I want to clean myself up in the bathroom. I will be back soon," I shouted back

ANDERSON'S POVHis body thudded. This caused other guards to be alert, and they came after me. I pulled out my gun and shot them; a few were dead, but I got overpowered."Hold him down!" one of them shouted at the others."One of them is over there; check out for her." They went after Tracy and caught her."Let go of me, you fools! You have nothing to do with your life other than work for someone who doesn't give a fuck about you!" She cursed them while struggling to get out of their grip. They were so strong; I had given up and given in. I would only get stronger if I got to see my kids. For now, I think the whole vision for everything is dead."Do you really think I am going to stay here and get caught by this psychopath? Come on, do something!" Tracy shouted at me with all the anger that was in her."There is nothing he can do. You think you can mess around and think you will escape? Yeah, bold of you to think you can get away from the boss." They all mocked and laughed at her.I f

EVAN'S POV"This place doesn't look real." I had to speak out because I felt unsure of what they were saying."A road to danger—you don't expect it to be good. It's going to be bad just like them and their deeds." Tracy, who had been quiet in the car, finally spoke up."Well... finally you have an idea about something you say." I mocked. She raised her hand to hit me but stopped halfway. The car halted."What's wrong?" Everyone's attention drifted to Evan."What's wrong? Speak!" I wasn't having enough patience."Are you all going to let me understand what happened, or are you just going to sit there and bombard me with questions?" Evan got back at us angrily.I sat back and let him speak. I still didn't get to understand what had happened to the car; neither of us did.He got down from the car and went to check what was beneath it. Just when he bent down, a bullet traveled from nowhere to our car."Get down!!" I shouted, and Tracy followed Evan down.I was the only one in the car. It

ANDERSON'S POV"Anderson, listen to me, you don't have to just jump in there." Evan was trying to stop me from going.I wandered around the room."I can't leave my children there for one more night." I had to let him know that, just in case he had forgotten."Yes, I do understand what you are trying to say, but if they have your kids, they know that you will be coming without even thinking. Well, you have to prove that wrong and don't fall into their trap." He clicked on the computer's keyboard roughly. We had been up all night thinking about a way to just put an end to everything. There was no signal; this is literally another country we are talking about here.Russia!"So I'm just going to take a flight to Russia to save my kids?" I scoffed."They are not based in Russia; they are around New York… they have a hideout." Tracy walked out of nowhere.Despite the fact that I just wanted to squeeze her and still kill her for taking my children outside in the first place, I still had to l

SIERRA'S POVI held Eleanor back from hurting herself. I was so proud that I got to her before she could do anything stupid."I'm tired of losing my children. I want to go," she wailed in agony. The pain could be heard in her voice, felt from her touch, and seen in her eyes. Everything in her was just screaming pain."You don't want to leave Anderson, do you? You felt the pain you went through when Anderson left you; that's how he is going to feel." I tied her hands down and sat her on the chair."You are a strong woman, and you were able to handle the stress and the kids. Anderson doesn't have the ability to do that, so you will stay with him." I held her down and spoke those words to her face. She struggled to get up, but I made sure she stayed down."Have you heard me!" I roared.I was filled with so much anger and pain. Unexpected tears rolled down my cheeks; I wiped them away because I didn't want any of them to see me crying."I need you to calm down and tell me what happened."

MAGGIE'S POV"These children do not deserve what you are doing to them. You should get the real culprit and face the parents like a man!" I spoke out with the little strength I had in me.Before I could complete the sentence, I felt a strike on my back.I screamed in pain; my skin was peeling, so that made everything worse."That's for talking to me in that manner."He made me sit upright, and then he landed another painful slap on one side of my cheek."That's for thinking I can't actually attack the parents." He walked away.Tears shimmered in my eyes when I watched the girl child stretch her hands toward me for help. I mean, I know I have kidnapped these children before, but I still feel so much pity for them.Eliana jumped, kept stretching her hands, and mouthing words."I can't help you, baby... I'm in chains," I mouthed."Let's go in, pretty little angels, and wait for your mommy or daddy to come pick you up," he mocked.Everything in me wanted to fight him, but then I remembere
