FAZER LOGINCHAPTER 15:
The black SUV tore through the estate gates and slammed to a halt outside the main entrance. Before the driver could even step out to open my door, James came charging out of the house. He yanked the car door open himself, his face pale and his silver eyes wild with pure panic. But before he even looked at me, he turned toward the team of bodyguards with terrifying fury, shouting at the top of his lungs. "What the hell were you doing?!" James roared, his voice shaking the entire driveway. "How could you let him out of your sight?! What am I paying you for?!" The lead bodyguard bowed his head, trembling under the Alpha's overwhelming aura. "I'm sorry, Mr. Vance! He sneaked out through the back without his phone... we didn't realize until he was already gone." Seeing the situation getting heavily heated and the security team shaking in fear, I stepped out of the vehicle and cut in. "Stop yelling at them, James! It wasn't their fault. I sneaked out on my own!" James whipped his head toward me, grabbing my shoulders and scanning every inch of my body. "Are you out of your mind, Soren?!" he yelled, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of fury and intense fear. "Why would you go out alone?! Why would you slip past security like that?!" I stumbled back slightly, surprised by his intense outburst. "James, I just wanted to see Charles—" "You could have been killed!" James yelled, his eyes glossy as he fought back actual tears. His broad chest heaved as he gripped his own hair in frustration. He was breathing heavily, his dominant Prime Alpha scent spiking with pure agony. Deep down inside, James's mind was spiraling into pitch darkness. If anything had happened to Soren... if he had died today, I would have died right alongside him. I can't live in a world without Soren. He is my everything. Seeing him yell at me triggered my own defensive walls. I pulled my sweater tighter around my body, stepping backward to put clear distance between us. "Lower your voice, James," I said, keeping my tone as cold and sharp as glass. "Let me remind you—we are partners in a contract, not a real marriage. If you're acting this crazy, it's only because of this baby. But you can stop worrying. This baby is my responsibility, not your business!" James froze, looking at me as if I had shoved a knife into his chest. His smoked cedar scent darkened into absolute heartbreak. Without waiting for him to reply, I turned on my heel and marched straight back into the estate, slamming my bedroom door shut. Later that afternoon, James drove back to the executive office in total silence. He slumped into his leather chair, staring blankly out the high glass window, looking completely drained and moody. Arthur walked in carrying a warm pot of tea. He took one look at his boss's miserable, heartbroken face and set the tray down softly. "Sir..." Arthur asked gently. "What happened?" James rubbed his face, his voice barely a rasp. "My... my friend had an argument with his partner. The partner almost got hurt today, and my friend lost his temper out of fear. But the partner just reminded him that they are only bound by a business contract, and told him to mind his own business." Arthur shook his head softly, giving a sympathetic sigh. "Sir, tell your friend not to be annoyed. When people are frightened, they build their walls higher. The more your friend's partner tries to pull away and create distance, the closer your friend needs to stand by him. He shouldn't distance himself now. He needs to make it up to him and keep showing him that he's not going anywhere." James looked up at Arthur, taking a deep, steadying breath as the secretary's words grounded him. His heartbreak slowly transformed into sharp, cold resolve. Soren was trying to protect himself behind contracts, but James wasn't going to let Matthew or Tyla tear their family apart. Ten minutes later, James didn't call a lawyer. He drove straight to Mercer Holdings. He pushed past the front security, kicking open the doors to Matthew’s private office. Matthew was sitting at his desk with a arrogant smirk, but the moment James walked in, the temperature in the room plummeted to sub-zero. James marched right up to the mahogany desk, leaning down and slamming both hands flat against the wood. His Prime Alpha command exploded in the room, making Matthew physically choke and tremble in his chair. "Listen to me very carefully, Matthew," James said, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper that promised complete destruction. "Tell Tyla—that useless, jealous dog of yours—to leave my fucking wife alone. If he ever tries to lay a finger on Soren or hurt my family again, I won't just ruin your company. I will destroy both of your lives so completely you won't even have a name left to hide behind." Matthew’s face turned paper-white. He couldn't even form a word as James turned on his heel and walked out, leaving absolute terror in his wake.CHAPTER 25: GONEJames cleared his entire schedule. He told me at breakfast, setting his phone face down on the table as if it were something dangerous."No meetings and no calls. Arthur will handle anything urgent." He reached for his tea. "Today we do whatever you want.""Whatever I want?""Within reason. You're supposed to be resting."I tried to remember the last time anyone had asked me what I wanted. I picked the market on the east side because Charles used to take me there when we were students. James had never been. He walked through the stalls in jeans and an old grey sweater with his sleeves pushed up and his hands stuffed in his pockets, a Prime Alpha surrounded by crates of oranges, and a woman selling dumplings called him sir three times before she asked if he was lost.I laughed until I had to hold the edge of her stall. We ate dumplings from paper boxes standing in the cold. We ate sugared nuts and a pastry that fell apart in James's hands. In the afternoon we found a s
CHAPTER 24: THE SALE Dr. Harris had told me to rest. I went home instead and found James still awake in the study with the lights low and a stack of reports he had not opened. He looked up when I came in. "You're late. And you're pale." "I'm tired." I took off my coat slowly so he would not see my hands. "James, I need to talk to you about Mercer Holdings." He set down his pen. "Sit down first." I sat. The pain was gone but my legs still felt unsteady. I had practiced the words in the van and they came out calmer than I felt. "I think the only solution left is for me to sell it." "To whom?" "To you." The silence stretched. James did not move. "I don't want to keep fighting," I said. "I don't want myself or the baby anywhere near this anymore. I want a quiet life and I want to move past all of it. I'll sell you the majority of the shares and leave my father a small stake so the family name stays on the register. I won't keep anything." "No." He said it before I finished. He
CHAPTER 23: THE PLAN After the lawyers I sat in the BMW with the folder on my lap and did not start the engine for a long time. When I finally drove I took the long way round, and by the time I reached Charles's street it was four hours since I had left the office tower. I should have known from the corner. Reporters had worked out that I came to the bakery every day, and now a crowd waited outside the shop with cameras and microphones. A man stood on the pavement describing the building to a lens as if it were a crime scene. I parked a block away and went in through the back lane. Charles had the door open before I knocked. The shop was dark except for the kitchen. Chairs sat upside down on the tables. The display cases were still full of croissants and bread and snacks that should have sold out by now. Not one tray was empty. "Is it always like this now?" I asked. "Since the leak." Charles shrugged but his shoulders were stiff. "Half my regulars stopped coming. The other half
CHAPTER 22: The numbers came in at market open.I was in James's study when Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A red line ran down the screen like a cut. Vance Enterprises had lost twenty percent in the first hour."It's the story," Arthur said. "Analysts are calling it a governance risk. They think the CEO was deceived by his own husband.""Deceived," James repeated flatly."That's the word on three financial channels."James didn't look at the screen again. He looked at me. "It will recover.""Will it?" I asked."Markets forget." He said it with great calm but his fingers pressed white against the edge of the desk.By noon the loss had grown to twenty-six percent. The board called an emergency meeting and James left for it with his jaw set. He kissed my forehead at the door. I stood in the quiet study afterward and listened to the car pull away.I turned on the television in the sitting room and muted it but the ticker kept crawling beneath the anchors. VANCE SHARES SLIDE. INVEST
CHAPTER 21: The headline hit before breakfast.Arthur stood in the dining hall doorway holding a tablet out in both hands. "Sir, you need to see this. Both of you."James took it first. I watched his jaw tighten as he read.MERCER HEIR'S CONTRACT MARRIAGE EXPOSED. WAS THE VANCE HEIR A BUSINESS DEAL?Below it was a scan of our contract with my signature at the bottom, small and neat."Where did they get this?" James asked quietly."The tabloid says an anonymous source," Arthur said. "It came in at five this morning. By six it was everywhere."Everyone in the room looked unsteady. Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. It spoke of a cash-strapped Mercer and a billionaire uncle and a marri
CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board
