CHAPTER 35:

Arthur

Arthur did not turn on a single light when he got home.

He sat on the edge of his bed in his coat and stared at the dark wall. His apartment was small and tidy and had never felt empty before. Now he could not stop seeing it. The boy in the road, the baker swinging him round. Soren in the doorway with flour on his face, laughing.

On his phone was one photograph, taken as he turned to leave. His hands had been shaking so badly that it was blurred at the edges. It showed a ye

CHAPTER 38:SorenJunior told me at bedtime.I had tucked him in and was turning down the lamp when he said, very sleepily, "Papa, I met a man in the queue while I was playing My hand stopped on the switch."A man?""He gave me a lollipop. Red one." He yawned. "Um... his name was James. He had sad eyes. And he likes lorries."I stood very still. The lamp hummed. Outside the window a dog barked once and was quiet."Papa?" Junior looked up at me. "Why are you always looking at the window? The man was nice. He wasn't scary. He only said hello."I could not answer. I sat down on the edge of the bed and put my hand on his back, and he was asleep before I could find any words at all.Charles was waiting for me on the back step.He had a mug of tea going cold in his hands, and he did not look up when I came out. The yard was dark and smelled of wet stone. I sat beside him and for a while neither of us said a thing."He told you," Charles said at last."He told me a man named James gave him

CHAPTER 37:SorenI woke at three and was in the kitchen by half past. The shop was dark and cold, and the only light was the glow from the oven. Charles was already there with flour to his elbows, folding butter into a sheet of dough as if it had personally offended him."You're early," he said."I couldn't sleep.""Neither could I." He nodded at the second table. "Croissants. Help me roll."We worked side by side without talking for a while. It was the best part of the day. The street was silent, the dough was soft under my hands, and the smell of butter and yeast filled the whole room. After the third tray went into the oven I wiped my hands and sat down on a stool."I have to finish the green coat today," I said. "And there's an order I don't like.""What order?""A client, through the lawyer. Twelve of our coats, paid in full in advance, delivered to an address in the city." I rubbed my eyes. "And they want the designer to call and discuss the fabric. Personally."Charles stopped

CHAPTER 36: James The High Council had put off its sitting twice, first when an elder fell ill and then when two houses failed to send their people. On Thursday morning it finally met. James had slept three hours. He had seen his son the day before. The photograph was in his breast pocket and he could feel it against his chest like a second heartbeat. The chamber was full. The elders sat along the long table in dark coats. Victor sat across from him with his hands folded, and Matthew sat beside him, pale and tight in the jaw. In the gallery above, Tyla leaned on the rail with his eyes on Arthur. Elder Harrow struck the table once. "We are here to continue the inquiry into the conduct of the Head of this House. Victor Vance, you may proceed." Victor rose slowly. "Elders, I take no pleasure in this. But I move that James Vance be removed as Head of House." A murmur ran down the table. "Consider the facts. A private contract, printed in every paper in the country. A husband who

It showed a yellow shop and a green awning and, on the step, a thin man with his sleeve rolled up, smiling at a boy.He had spent twelve years trying to take everything from a family. Tonight he had stood outside one and understood what it cost.He sat there until the window turned grey.JamesJames was already in the office when Arthur arrived. He had not slept either."Did you see him?" His voice was rough. "Did you find where he lives?""Yes, sir." Arthur set his coat down slowly. "I found the town. I didn

CHAPTER 34: THE TRACESorenMichelle found the article on a Tuesday morning and brought it to the counter without a word. She put her phone down in front of me. The headline was short. Vance Enterprises Joins Midas Touch to Take Fashion Global. Under it was a photograph of two men shaking hands in front of a glass building. One of them was Obadiah. The other was James.I read it standing up. Then I had to sit down.He looked thinner. His hair was shorter and there were lines at the corners of his eyes that had not been there four years ago. I had not seen his face since the night I left. I had trained myself not to picture it. Now it was in my hands, in a bakery, with flour on the screen."We have to cut Midas Touch," Michelle said. "Today. Cancel the contract and disappear.""We can't just run," Charles said. He had come in from the oven with his sleeves rolled up. "We've been careful for four years. Nobody has looked for us in that time. This is a partnership between two big compani

CHAPTER 33: JamesThe morning after the confession, nobody in the building knew that anything had changed.Arthur came in at seven with the schedule and the coffee, as he always did. James took the cup and said nothing. Neither of them mentioned the night before. There was only a small gap between them now, one that had not been there in all the years Arthur had worked for him."The Council meets again in three days," Arthur said, reading from the tablet. "And the Midas Touch preview is tonight at six.""Cancel the preview.""Sir, the partnership announcement is the one thing helping the share price. If you don't go, Victor will say you can't run your own deals either."James rubbed his eyes. Arthur was right, and they both knew it. "Fine."The preview was in a glass showroom by the river. Clothes hung on racks under white lights, and investors walked between them with drinks. The invitation was printed on thick cream card. Midas Touch in collaboration with Jimmy's Atelier. James had
