SERENA’S POV

I stood frozen on the pavement as the crowd noise blurred into a distant roar and my hands trembled so hard I could barely feel my fingers. The knife still lay a few feet away glinting under the afternoon light and every breath scraped my throat raw.

This was Italy. This was supposed to be safe. I had only just returned and already someone had come for me with a blade in broad daylight.

I had convinced myself the danger belonged to America, that the lonely nights and the feeling

SERENA’S POV “AHHHGGGGGGHH…” I groaned and pressed both palms against my temples as if pressure alone could hold the pieces together. The room tilted when I forced myself upright. My stomach rolled and my mouth tasted like ash mixed with last night’s whiskey. Soft morning light filtered through the curtains yet even that gentle brightness made my eyes water. I sat on the edge of the bed and tried to piece the evening back together. The last clear memory was the question I threw at Stefano in the car. ‘Do you actually feel anything for me, or am I just something you pick up and put down when it suits you?’After that everything blurred. But I could remember that somewhere in that haze I saw him standing outside the open door, tall and still, his mouth moving as if the words mattered more than anything else in the world. But what was he saying? Was he confessing his feelings for me? “Damn you, Serena,” I groaned in frustration. “Why the fuck did you get yourself so drunk like that?”

STEFANO’S POV“Stef— do you… actually feel anything for me, or am I just something you pick up and put down when it suits you?” That question hung in the air as I wondered what my answer would be. I kept my hands on the wheel and stared at the dark stretch of road ahead as I repeated the question in my head over and over again. “I—I knew it… you will never love me—” she slurred. I felt my heart break into a thousand pieces. She thinks I will never love her. She believes that I hate her and that I would never fall in love with her. What the fuck? How could she even think that? Isn’t it obvious enough for her to know that I was going crazy because of the feelings I have for her? “Serena,” I called softly. There was no answer. I turned in my seat and looked at her. Her head had tilted against the window, her lips were slightly parted, one hand resting loosely on her lap. The streetlights washed over her face in brief flashes of gold and shadow. She looked peaceful, vulnerable and

SERENA’S POV The car stopped so suddenly that my body shifted hard against the seatbelt and the world tilted for a second before settling again. My head felt heavy and warm from the alcohol I had poured into myself on purpose, yet the edges of everything stayed sharp enough that I understood exactly where I was and who was speaking. Stefano’s voice cut through the quiet interior with a roughness I had not heard from him before.“How could you go on a date with another man and look that happy about it?” I forced my eyelids higher and found his face turned toward me from the front seat. The question made so little sense that a short confused sound left my throat before any real words formed. He had spent the entire day watching me with Marko and had done nothing to stop it. He had driven me there. He had sat twenty feet away while another man made me smile. Now he sounded angry that I had looked happy. My tongue felt thick and the words came out slower than I wanted, each one sliding

STEFANO’S POVThe book fair doors opened into a low roar of voices and the dry scent of paper and ink. Serena stepped inside with Marko’s hand already linked through hers as if the contact were the most natural thing in the world. The sight of those fingers laced together sent a fresh spike of pure hatred through my chest. I wanted to kill someone and it was not her. It was him.Marko walked through the crowd like a man who had never been denied anything, flawless and calm and completely without the faults I kept searching for. Why did he have to be this perfect? Why could he not stumble once so I could use that as an avenue to prove to Serena that he’s not the right person for her? I followed at the required distance as every muscle stayed locked. Last night I had been buried in another woman’s body and still the only name that left my mouth was Serena’s. She was the reason I never got the satisfaction I needed. She was the reason I masturbated before going to sleep. Wasn’t she th

SERENA’S POVMarko held the chair for me with quiet courtesy and waited until I was settled before taking the seat across from me. His eyes moved over the red dress once, steady and appreciative without ever dropping lower than necessary.“That color suits you,” he said. “It makes you look confident and completely at ease. You look so good.” The compliment made me feel at ease. There was no lingering stare, no remark about how the fabric clung or how much skin it showed. Other men would have turned the same dress into something cheap within the first thirty seconds. Marko simply noticed and moved on, and the restraint won more ground than I wanted to give him. I had chosen this outfit specifically to make him uncomfortable, to push him into the kind of judgment that would let me walk away clean. Instead he treated it like ordinary elegance and the first crack in my plan appeared before the water even arrived. “So I heard from your Father that you are into writing,” he said with gen

STEFANO’S POV “Make sure she has her breakfast no matter how stubborn she tries to be,” I whispered to Leonardo on the phone. He took a deep breath. I could hear Zoe’s voice from the background, she was yelling at the chef. “I will try my best, Boss,” Leonardo replied before dropping the call. I sighed softly. Zoe was being stubborn and angry because of last night. I failed her, I had told her that I was going to be gone for an hour or two but I stayed out late drinking myself to stupor. I will explain things to her when I return back tonight. I dropped my phone in my pocket and stepped back into the main hall. The moment I stepped inside I caught the faint scent of bacon and coffee still hanging in the air. The American breakfast I had quietly arranged through Elena that morning had already been cleared. Plates sat stacked on the sideboard and Serena’s seat at the dining table was empty. I had wanted to watch her face when she saw the familiar food waiting, the small proof tha
