Ava's POV

I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Liam standing in front of me.

His anger, his tears. The way he had looked at me after discovering the truth. And most of all, his words.

I don't know what I think of you anymore.

I turned in bed and stared at the ceiling.

I knew I had hurt him but knowing that didn't make it hurt any less.

I finally forced myself out of bed and got ready for work. When I walked into the kitchen, Mom was already there with Damien.

She looked at me for

Ava’s POVMonday morning began with Damien sitting quietly at the breakfast table.I was helping him get ready for school when I noticed he had barely touched his food.“Sweetheart, are you okay?”He looked up at me. “I don’t feel too well, Mummy.”My heart tightened.“What’s wrong? Does your stomach hurt?”He shook his head. “I just feel tired.”I immediately remembered Miranda’s call. Damien’s blood condition. The possibility that something could go wrong as he grew older.I crouched beside him and touched his forehead.“You don’t feel hot. But we’ll go to the hospital after I come back from work, okay? The doctor will check you.”“Do I have to go to school?”“I know you don’t feel like going, but if you feel worse, tell your teacher immediately. I’ll come and get you.”He nodded.I wanted to keep him home, but I had a board meeting at Cross Industries that morning. I told myself I would take him for a checkup as soon as work was over. After dropping him off, I drove to the office w

Ava’s POV“Hello, Ava,” Dr. Miranda Kane said. “It’s been a while.”I frowned at my phone. “Dr. Kane? Is everything okay?”“Not exactly. I need to discuss something important concerning Damien.”My heart skipped.“Damien? What happened to him?”“Nothing has happened yet. But there’s something about his health you need to know.”I gripped my phone tighter. “What is it?”“I’ll send you a picture. Open it when it arrives.”A message appeared on my screen a moment later. It was a view-once image.I tapped it.A medical report filled my screen. I tried to read it quickly, but the image disappeared before I could study every detail.“Dr. Kane, what was that? I couldn’t read everything.”“It was Damien’s medical report,” she replied calmly. “He has a rare blood-cell disorder. It was detected when he was younger, and although it hasn’t caused serious symptoms, it could become more dangerous as he grows. He may eventually need specialized transfusions.”I stood still.“Wait. What disorder? Why

Dr. Miranda Kane’s POVI stared at the stack of bills on my desk, wondering how much longer I could keep pretending everything was under control. The hospital was struggling. Two suppliers had refused to deliver essential equipment until we cleared our outstanding payments. The staff had been asking about their salaries, and the hospital’s management had started discussing which departments could be cut back.I had spent years building this place. I couldn’t stand the thought of watching it fall apart. My phone rang.It was my daughter’s school.“Good afternoon, Dr. Kane,” the woman on the other end said. “We’re calling to remind you that your daughter’s outstanding fees are due this week.”I closed my eyes briefly.“I know. I’ll make the payment as soon as I can.”“We understand, ma’am, but we need to settle the account before the next term.”“I said I’ll pay it.”I ended the call and stared at my phone.Being a single mother meant every responsibility rested on my shoulders. There w

And Liam is getting engaged tonight.”Stacy paused behind me. “This is either going to be very interesting or very painful.”I let out a tired breath. “I didn’t know it was Liam’s engagement party when Sebastian invited me. If I had known, I would have refused.”“But now you’ve accepted,” Elena said.“He planned everything. I can’t just turn him down at the last minute.” I glanced at myself in the mirror. “Besides, Liam will be busy with Genevieve and the guests. He probably won’t even notice me.”Stacy gave me a look. “Ava, you know that’s not true.”I didn’t answer. They stepped back to admire their work. My hair fell neatly around my shoulders, and the silver gown
