Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Steward

Kael's men caught Corwin meeting someone at the edge of the eastern orchard, past midnight, three nights before the ceremony.

I heard about it before dawn, Damian shaking me gently awake, already dressed, already tense in a way that told me before he said a word that whatever had happened wasn't good news wrapped in caution. It was bad news wrapped in urgency.

"Corwin met a contact last night," he said. "Kael's men were watching, close enough to confirm it, no

Chapter Forty-TwoI didn't sleep that night. Neither did Damian, though we both pretended for a while, lying together in the dark, listening to the castle breathe around us while somewhere out past the western border, Kael's men moved toward whatever waited for them.Word came just before dawn. A rider, exhausted, mud splattered, pounding up to the gates loud enough that I heard the commotion from our chambers and was on my feet before Damian could stop me."Stay here," he said, already pulling on a shirt. "I'll bring you word the second I have it.""Damian—""Please." His voice cracked slightly. "Let me go first. If it's bad, I need a moment before you see my face."I let him go, though every part of me wanted to follow, and paced our chambers for what felt like an hour but was probably only minutes, hands pressed to my stomach, the twins restless beneath my palms as if they could feel my fear directly. He came back faster than I expected, and the look on his face told me everything

Chapter Forty-One: The Last Few DaysThe castle settled into a strange, tense quiet as the ten days wore down, everyone moving through their normal routines while the strike team quietly finished its preparations underneath the surface of things.I spent more time with Sable in those final days, her strength mostly returned now, the two of us sitting together in the garden most afternoons while Fenna's orders about rest kept me from doing much else."You seem different today," Sable said, the eighth day, watching me more closely than usual."The strike's in two days." I pressed a hand to my stomach, the twins restless again, as if they could feel the tension running through the whole castle even from inside me. "I keep trying not to think about it, and failing.""Kael's good at what he does. I trust him to bring everyone back safe." She paused. "I know that's easy for me to say, not being the one married to the man who has to send them out there.""It's not just that. I keep thinking

Chapter Forty: PreparationsKael picked his teams over the following days, and I watched the war room fill and empty on a new rhythm, guards called in one at a time, briefed quietly, sent off to continue their normal duties so nothing about the castle's routine looked different from the outside."Forty men," Kael said, laying out the final roster for Damian. "Split into four groups of ten, converging on the base from different directions the night of the strike. Nobody travels together long enough to be noticed as a unit.""And the timing," Damian asked."Ten days from now. New moon, darkest night we'll get in the next month. Gives us the best cover for the approach." Kael tapped the map. "If Vex's pattern holds, he won't be there that night. Which is fine. We're not after him specifically anymore. We're after the base."I sat nearby, listening, a hand resting on my stomach where the twins had started pressing hard enough against my ribs some mornings that I had to stop and breathe th

The war room became a second home over the following days, maps spread permanently across the table now, Kael and Damian working through troop numbers and approach routes while I sat nearby, not quite part of the military planning but close enough to offer what I could."The narrow paths work for us and against us both," Kael said, tracing the approach to Vex's base with one finger. "Hard for a large force to move in without being seen. But that also means we can't bring overwhelming numbers. Whoever goes in has to be good enough to win without relying on sheer size.""How many can we send without it looking like an obvious strike force, moving through villages that are already terrified of anyone armed and unfamiliar?" Damian asked."Thirty, maybe forty, broken into smaller groups that converge near the base rather than traveling together." Kael's jaw was tight with concentration. "It's tight. If Vex has more men stationed there than Greta's source suggested, we could be walking into

Chapter Thirty-EightFour days felt longer than any stretch of time since I'd arrived at the Black Moon Empire.I tried to keep busy, sitting through fittings for clothes that would fit as my stomach grew, meeting with Fenna twice that week instead of once because the twins had started kicking hard enough to worry me, sitting with Sable in the afternoons as she finished healing and slowly returned to something like her old self. None of it fully distracted me from the knot of worry sitting under my ribs, thinking about Greta somewhere out past the western border, walking calmly into villages controlled by fear and a man who'd spent twenty years learning exactly how to use it.Damian was worse than I was, though he tried not to show it. I caught him standing at windows more often than usual, jaw tight, eyes distant. Kael kept him busy with council matters and guard rotations, but I could tell it was only partly working."She'll be fine," I told him, the third night, finding him on the

Chapter Thirty-SevenThe scout came back six days later, thinner than he'd left, dust and road grime still clinging to him when Kael brought him straight to the war room without letting him rest first."Report," Damian said, the second the door closed."Hollow Vale's not just a supply route." The scout's voice was rough from days of talking to no one. "Vex has men stationed there. Not many, maybe a dozen, but enough to control the villages through fear. They collect what they call a protection tax. Anyone who refuses to pay, or who talks too openly to strangers, disappears."My stomach turned. "Disappears how?""Nobody says out loud. But everyone knows what it means." The scout's jaw tightened. "I spent three days pretending to be a trader passing through before anyone trusted me enough to talk quietly, and even then, most of what I got was fear, not facts. One woman told me Vex himself came through about two months ago. Stayed a week in a house at the edge of the northernmost village
