CHAPTER 3: THE FIRST PERFORMANCE

last update 게시일: 2026-10-19 07:53:39

Rosa arrived at exactly two o’clock.

She was polite but distant, the way people are when they already know you won’t be staying long. We took a different black car, this time sleeker, with a partition between us and the driver. As the city slid past the windows, I caught my reflection in the glass. The same tired face. The same cheap sweater. Only the background had changed.

The first store Rosa took me to didn’t have price tags.

A woman in a cream suit greeted us like we had expected. Within minutes I was standing in a private fitting room larger than my old bedroom while silent attendants brought dress after dress. Deep greens. Soft blacks. A blood-red gown that made me look like someone else entirely.

“Mr. Voss prefers classic tones,” Rosa said quietly when she saw me hesitate over a bright blue dress. “Nothing too loud.”

I put the blue one back.

By the time we left, the back of the car was filled with garment bags and boxes. Shoes that cost more than three months of my old rent. A black clutch so soft it felt like touching night itself. I kept waiting for someone to tell me there had been a mistake.

No one did.

When we returned to the penthouse, the sky was already turning the color of bruised plums. Rosa helped me carry everything to my room, then paused at the door.

“Mr. Voss will be home for dinner tonight. He requested that you join him. Formal attire.”

My stomach tightened. “Formal?”

She nodded once and left.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror wearing a simple black dress that still felt too elegant for me. The neckline was modest, the fabric expensive. I barely recognized the woman staring back.

At precisely eight, I walked into the dining room.

Damien was already seated at the long glass table. He had changed into a black shirt with the sleeves rolled once at the wrists. No tie. The top button is undone. Somehow he looked even more dangerous like this.

He glanced up when I entered. His eyes moved over me slowly, assessing, but his expression stayed unreadable.

“Sit.”

I took the chair across from him. The table was so long it felt like we were shouting across a river. Two place settings. Candlelight that somehow made the silence colder.

A server appeared, poured wine neither of us touched, and disappeared again.

Damien cut into his steak with precise movements. “Was the shopping successful?”

“Yes.”

“You will need more. There is a charity gala on Friday. You will attend as my wife.”

I set my fork down. “Already?”

“The contract began the moment you signed.” His voice was calm, almost bored. “People will expect to see us together. The sooner the public believes the marriage is real, the better.”

I stared at the perfect slice of meat on my plate. My appetite had vanished.

“What do I have to do at this gala?”

“Smile. Hold my arm. Answer questions with the answers I give you. Do not wander off. Do not speak to the press without me present.” He took a sip of water. “Most importantly, do not look at me the way you are looking at me right now.”

I blinked. “How am I looking at you?”

“Like you are trying to find a person underneath.” His gaze lifted and locked onto mine. “There isn’t one. Stop searching.”

The words should not have hurt. I had known what I was signing up for. Still, something sharp slid between my ribs.

I forced a small, empty smile. “Understood.”

We finished the meal in silence. When the plates were cleared, Damien stood.

“I have work. You are free to use any room except the ones I mentioned. Do not wait up.”

He walked past me. The faint scent of his cologne, something dark and expensive lingered for a second before disappearing with him.

I sat alone at the long table until the candles burned lower.

Later, in my room, I stood at the window with the city glittering beneath me like scattered diamonds. Somewhere down there, people were living ordinary lives. Fighting over bills. Laughing at bad television. Sleeping next to someone who actually wanted them there.

I pressed my palm against the cold glass.

Twelve months.

Three hundred and sixty-five days of performing.

I turned away from the view and noticed a small black box on the nightstand that had not been there earlier. Inside lay a simple platinum band and a second ring set with a diamond so large it looked almost vulgar.

A note in sharp handwriting rested beneath them.

“Wear these starting tomorrow.

D.V.”

I slid the platinum band onto my finger. It fit perfectly, as if someone had measured my hand while I wasn’t looking.

The diamond ring felt heavier.

I left both rings on the nightstand and climbed into the massive bed. The sheets were soft enough to drown in. Sleep still refused to come.

Somewhere down the hall, a door closed. Soft footsteps moved past my room and faded.

Damien Voss was home, yet the penthouse felt emptier than my old apartment ever had.

I closed my eyes and whispered the only promise I could keep.

I would survive this.

Even if the cold killed every soft part of me first.

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 10: THE PERFORMANCE

The stylists arrived at four in the afternoon. They worked in near silence, transforming me piece by piece. Hair swept into an elegant twist. Makeup is soft but precise enough to look expensive under camera flashes. The black gown settled over my skin like liquid night. When Margot fastened the diamond earrings and stepped back, she gave a single nod of approval.“You look like you belong to him,” she said.I didn’t correct her.At six-thirty I stood in the living room, waiting. The heels made me taller. The gown made me feel both powerful and exposed. I kept my hands still so the rings wouldn’t tremble. The elevator chimed at 6:42.Damien stepped out in a black tuxedo that looked as if it had been cut from the dark itself. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved over the gown, the earrings, the way the fabric followed the line of my body. For a fraction of a second something unguarded flickered across his face, surprise, or perhaps an assessment that went deeper than usual. Then th

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 9: THE NIGHT BEFORE

Thursday passed in a strange, suspended quiet.I woke early, as I had every morning since moving in, and found the penthouse empty again. Damien had already left for the office. Rosa served breakfast without conversation. The gown hung in the closet like a promise I wasn’t ready to keep. The diamond earrings waited on the nightstand beside the rings I now wore even when I slept.I tried to fill the hours. I called Lila and listened to her talk about classes and a boy she liked, carefully avoiding any real questions about my new life. I spoke to the hospital and confirmed Dad’s pre-surgery schedule. I even attempted to read a book I found on one of the living-room shelves, but the words refused to stay in my head.Every time I looked at the clock, Friday crept closer. In the afternoon Rosa appeared with a small black box and a note written in Damien’s sharp handwriting.“Wear these tomorrow night. Do not remove them until we return.”Inside were a pair of black heels so delicate they

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 8: THE FITTING

The stylist arrived at exactly four. Her name was Margot. She was tall, silver-haired, and spoke in short, precise sentences. She didn’t ask how I was. She simply unzipped the garment bag and ordered me to change. The gown was black and heavy in the most deliberate way. Soft fabric that clung and then fell. A low back. A high slit that made me feel exposed even before anyone else saw it. When Margot finished adjusting the final seam, she stepped back and nodded once.“Turn.”I turned. She circled me slowly. “Mr. Voss chose well. The cut makes you look expensive.”I didn’t know whether that was a compliment. While she worked, Rosa entered with a small black box. Inside were diamond earrings that matched the ring on my finger. Margot fastened them without asking. The cold metal against my skin made me flinch.“Friday night you will not touch your hair or your face once we are done with you,” Margot said. “You will walk in on Mr. Voss’s arm, smile when the cameras require it, and speak o

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 7: WHITE WALLS AND DIAMOND RINGS

The private car stopped in front of the hospital at 10:03 a.m.I sat in the back seat for a full minute after the driver opened the door, staring at the familiar glass entrance. The last time I walked through those doors, I was terrified and broke. Today I wore a cream coat that cost more than my old monthly rent and a diamond that caught the morning light every time I moved my hand.Rosa had insisted on the coat. “Mr. Voss prefers you look composed in public,” she had said. I didn’t argue.Inside, the difference was immediate. The nurse at the desk recognized my name and smiled too politely. “Mrs. Voss, right this way. Your father was moved to the executive wing yesterday.”Executive wing. Even the hospital had a hierarchy.Dad’s new room was quiet and flooded with soft light. He looked smaller than I remembered against the white sheets, but the machines around him were newer and quieter. When he turned his head and saw me, his tired eyes widened.“Ava.” His voice was rough. “You l

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 6: FIFTEEN MINUTES

The interview was scheduled for eleven the next morning.I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw headlines and strangers’ comments calling me a gold digger. When the sky finally lightened, I gave up and sat by the window with a cup of tea I didn’t drink.Rosa appeared at nine with a makeup artist and a stylist. They worked in silence, transforming me into someone who looked like she belonged on Damien Voss’s arm. Soft makeup. Hair in elegant waves. A cream blouse and tailored black trousers that fit too perfectly. When they finished, I stared at the mirror and felt like a stranger was staring back.At ten-forty, the elevator chimed.Damien stepped out in a charcoal suit, already looking like he had won three arguments before breakfast. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved from my hair to the rings on my finger, then back to my face.“Acceptable,” he said. That was the closest thing to a compliment I had received. The magazine team arrived five minutes later. Two people

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 5: PUBLIC PROPERTY

The announcement dropped at 9:17 a.m.I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee that had gone cold when my phone started lighting up like a warning signal. First one message. Then five. Then too many to count.“Unknown: Is it true you’re married to Damien Voss?”“Unknown: How long have you been together? ““Unknown:Any comments on the sudden marriage?”I locked the screen without answering.Rosa appeared quietly and placed a tablet in front of me. The headline was already everywhere.“Voss Empire CEO Marries in Private Ceremony” Damien Voss, the notoriously private billionaire, has confirmed his marriage to Ava Reed. Details of the relationship remain scarce.A single photo was attached, one I didn’t even remember being taken. Damien and I were standing near the elevators in the lobby of Voss Tower. His hand rested lightly on the small of my back. I was looking straight ahead, expression carefully blank. The caption called me his “new wife.”I felt sick.My phone rang
