CHAPTER 4: THE WEIGHT OF THE RINGS

last update 게시일: 2026-10-19 07:54:33

I woke before the sun.

For a few seconds I forgot where I was. The bed was too soft. The air was too quiet. Then the massive windows came into focus and reality returned like cold water.

I was in Damien Voss’s penthouse.

I was his contract wife.

And the two rings still sat on the nightstand, waiting.

I sat up slowly and reached for them. The platinum band slid on easily. The diamond ring felt heavier than it should have, as if it carried every lie I was about to live. I stared at my hand under the soft morning light. It no longer looked like mine.

Rosa knocked at seven.

“Breakfast is ready, Mrs. Voss.”

The name landed strangely in my chest. I followed her to the dining room. Only one place was set. Damien’s chair was empty.

“Mr. Voss left for the office at five-thirty,” Rosa said as she poured coffee. “He will not return until late.”

Of course he wouldn’t.

I ate alone at the long glass table, the diamond on my finger catching the light every time I lifted the cup. The silence was so complete I could hear my own breathing.

After breakfast, I walked through the penthouse like a guest who had overstayed. Every room was perfect and empty. No books left open. No half-finished coffee cups. No sign that a real person lived here except the locked door at the end of Damien's study hall.

I stopped in front of it for a long moment but didn’t touch the handle.

In the living room I found a grand piano near the windows. The lid was closed. I ran my fingers along the polished surface, remembering the old keyboard I used to play in the apartment before we sold it to pay for Dad’s first round of treatment. My hands itched to open it, but I pulled back. This wasn’t my home. Nothing here was mine.

My phone buzzed.

(Lila: How is it? Are you okay?)

I stared at the message for a long time before replying.

(Ava:I’m fine. Everything is taken care of. Focus on school.)

I couldn’t tell her the truth. That the man I married didn’t even eat breakfast with me. That I felt more alone in this glass palace than I ever had in our tiny apartment.

Around noon, Rosa appeared again with a garment bag.

“Mr. Voss sent this for the gala on Friday. He also requested that you visit the salon tomorrow for a hair and makeup trial.”

I took the bag without speaking. Inside was a floor-length black gown with a soft cowl neckline and a high slit. Elegant. Expensive. Chosen by a man who had barely looked at me twice.

I hung it in the closet beside the other new clothes and sat on the edge of the bed.

The day stretched ahead of me like an empty road.

I tried reading. I tried watching television. I even tried calling the hospital for an update on Dad, only to be told that all bills had already been cleared and his surgery was scheduled for next week. The nurse sounded almost cheerful. I should have felt relieved. Instead, I felt the walls of the penthouse press closer.

By late afternoon the sky had turned the color of steel. I was standing at the window when the private elevator chimed.

Damien stepped out.

He looked the same as yesterday, in his perfect suit, an expression carved from ice, except there was a faint shadow of tiredness under his eyes. He paused when he saw me.

“You’re still here.”

I turned. “Where else would I be?”

He loosened his tie with one hand as he walked toward the bar. “Most women in your position would have already gone shopping again or invited friends over to show off the view.”

“I don’t have friends who would understand this view,” I said quietly.

He poured himself a drink but didn’t offer me one. “The rings look better on you than I expected.”

I glanced down at my hand. “They’re just metal.”

“They’re a statement.” He took a slow sip. “Tomorrow the company will release a short announcement about our marriage. Keep your phone close. Journalists will start calling.”

My stomach dropped. “So soon?”

“The faster the public accepts it, the less attention it will draw later.” He set the glass down and finally looked at me fully. “You will not answer any questions about how we met or why the wedding was private. If pressed, you will say it was a private ceremony for family reasons only.”

“And if they ask if it’s a real marriage?”

His gaze didn’t flicker. “You will smile and say yes.”

The lie sat between us like a third person.

I nodded once. “Understood.”

Damien studied me for a moment longer, as if searching for cracks. When he found none, he picked up his glass again.

“I have a call in ten minutes. Dinner will be sent to your room tonight.”

He started toward the hallway, then stopped without turning around.

“Ava.”

My name in his mouth still sounded careful, like he was testing the weight of it.

“Yes?”

“Do not mistake silence for peace. This house is quiet for a reason.”

He disappeared down the hall. A door closed firmly behind him.

I stood alone in the living room as the city lights began to flicker below. The diamond on my finger felt heavier than it had that morning.

Somewhere in this perfect, empty penthouse, the coldest man in the city was working behind a locked door.

And I was beginning to understand that surviving twelve months might require more than just following rules.

It might require learning how to stop wanting things I could never have.

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 10: THE PERFORMANCE

The stylists arrived at four in the afternoon. They worked in near silence, transforming me piece by piece. Hair swept into an elegant twist. Makeup is soft but precise enough to look expensive under camera flashes. The black gown settled over my skin like liquid night. When Margot fastened the diamond earrings and stepped back, she gave a single nod of approval.“You look like you belong to him,” she said.I didn’t correct her.At six-thirty I stood in the living room, waiting. The heels made me taller. The gown made me feel both powerful and exposed. I kept my hands still so the rings wouldn’t tremble. The elevator chimed at 6:42.Damien stepped out in a black tuxedo that looked as if it had been cut from the dark itself. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved over the gown, the earrings, the way the fabric followed the line of my body. For a fraction of a second something unguarded flickered across his face, surprise, or perhaps an assessment that went deeper than usual. Then th

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 9: THE NIGHT BEFORE

Thursday passed in a strange, suspended quiet.I woke early, as I had every morning since moving in, and found the penthouse empty again. Damien had already left for the office. Rosa served breakfast without conversation. The gown hung in the closet like a promise I wasn’t ready to keep. The diamond earrings waited on the nightstand beside the rings I now wore even when I slept.I tried to fill the hours. I called Lila and listened to her talk about classes and a boy she liked, carefully avoiding any real questions about my new life. I spoke to the hospital and confirmed Dad’s pre-surgery schedule. I even attempted to read a book I found on one of the living-room shelves, but the words refused to stay in my head.Every time I looked at the clock, Friday crept closer. In the afternoon Rosa appeared with a small black box and a note written in Damien’s sharp handwriting.“Wear these tomorrow night. Do not remove them until we return.”Inside were a pair of black heels so delicate they

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 8: THE FITTING

The stylist arrived at exactly four. Her name was Margot. She was tall, silver-haired, and spoke in short, precise sentences. She didn’t ask how I was. She simply unzipped the garment bag and ordered me to change. The gown was black and heavy in the most deliberate way. Soft fabric that clung and then fell. A low back. A high slit that made me feel exposed even before anyone else saw it. When Margot finished adjusting the final seam, she stepped back and nodded once.“Turn.”I turned. She circled me slowly. “Mr. Voss chose well. The cut makes you look expensive.”I didn’t know whether that was a compliment. While she worked, Rosa entered with a small black box. Inside were diamond earrings that matched the ring on my finger. Margot fastened them without asking. The cold metal against my skin made me flinch.“Friday night you will not touch your hair or your face once we are done with you,” Margot said. “You will walk in on Mr. Voss’s arm, smile when the cameras require it, and speak o

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 7: WHITE WALLS AND DIAMOND RINGS

The private car stopped in front of the hospital at 10:03 a.m.I sat in the back seat for a full minute after the driver opened the door, staring at the familiar glass entrance. The last time I walked through those doors, I was terrified and broke. Today I wore a cream coat that cost more than my old monthly rent and a diamond that caught the morning light every time I moved my hand.Rosa had insisted on the coat. “Mr. Voss prefers you look composed in public,” she had said. I didn’t argue.Inside, the difference was immediate. The nurse at the desk recognized my name and smiled too politely. “Mrs. Voss, right this way. Your father was moved to the executive wing yesterday.”Executive wing. Even the hospital had a hierarchy.Dad’s new room was quiet and flooded with soft light. He looked smaller than I remembered against the white sheets, but the machines around him were newer and quieter. When he turned his head and saw me, his tired eyes widened.“Ava.” His voice was rough. “You l

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 6: FIFTEEN MINUTES

The interview was scheduled for eleven the next morning.I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw headlines and strangers’ comments calling me a gold digger. When the sky finally lightened, I gave up and sat by the window with a cup of tea I didn’t drink.Rosa appeared at nine with a makeup artist and a stylist. They worked in silence, transforming me into someone who looked like she belonged on Damien Voss’s arm. Soft makeup. Hair in elegant waves. A cream blouse and tailored black trousers that fit too perfectly. When they finished, I stared at the mirror and felt like a stranger was staring back.At ten-forty, the elevator chimed.Damien stepped out in a charcoal suit, already looking like he had won three arguments before breakfast. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved from my hair to the rings on my finger, then back to my face.“Acceptable,” he said. That was the closest thing to a compliment I had received. The magazine team arrived five minutes later. Two people

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 5: PUBLIC PROPERTY

The announcement dropped at 9:17 a.m.I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee that had gone cold when my phone started lighting up like a warning signal. First one message. Then five. Then too many to count.“Unknown: Is it true you’re married to Damien Voss?”“Unknown: How long have you been together? ““Unknown:Any comments on the sudden marriage?”I locked the screen without answering.Rosa appeared quietly and placed a tablet in front of me. The headline was already everywhere.“Voss Empire CEO Marries in Private Ceremony” Damien Voss, the notoriously private billionaire, has confirmed his marriage to Ava Reed. Details of the relationship remain scarce.A single photo was attached, one I didn’t even remember being taken. Damien and I were standing near the elevators in the lobby of Voss Tower. His hand rested lightly on the small of my back. I was looking straight ahead, expression carefully blank. The caption called me his “new wife.”I felt sick.My phone rang
