The thunder of drums shifted into the blare of a long horn. The Alphas descended into the stone-ringed arena, its walls lined with ancient terraces. Bonfires roared at the four corners, each flame marking one of the sacred directions. A Moon Keeper, a gray-robed elder, lifted his staff of bone.

“Friendly combat. Not for vengeance, but for respect. The blood spilled here is bound by oath.”

Liam stood among the honored line, arms folded, his gaze flicking toward me. I gave him a small nod. He kept his promise holding back.

The first match began: the Alpha of Blackclaw versus the Alpha of Ironhowl. Cheers erupted as two tall men shed their cloaks, shifting in an instant. Bones cracked, muscles swelled, fur burst forth black and gray. They circled, snapped, lunged testing reflexes, measuring dominance. Minutes later, Ironhowl lowered his muzzle in defeat.

My chest tightened. No matter how many times I witnessed it, the transformation always unsettled me not from fear, but from the knowled

“I have prepared the serum,” Dad said. That sentence was supposed to give hope. But at the same time, fear swallowed me whole. I stared at Elena’s small body still lying weak on the bed. An IV tube was attached to her tiny hand. Her breathing was slow, as if every inhale was a huge effort for her.Liam stood beside me. His hand gripped the back of my hand tightly, as if he was afraid I would collapse at any moment.“Is this the only way?”Dad nodded. “Silvermoon attacks the nerves and blood of young lycan descendants. Elena is half human, which makes her body react twice as severely. If we don’t neutralize it now, the poison will spread to her heart.”I covered my mouth with my palm. Tears immediately streamed down my face. “Elena is only five years old, she is still too little…”Liam gently rubbed my shoulder. I could hear his heavy breathing. He was trying to be strong, but his voice trembled.“We will do anything for her,” Liam said.Dad had already opened the small case containing

The night moved slowly as if it did not want to end. Liam sat on the small sofa near the patient bed, but I knew there was no way he could fall asleep. From the way he stared at Elena without blinking, I knew he was just as scared as I was.I sat on the chair attached to the bed, still holding Elena’s tiny hand. From time to time, I kissed the back of her hand, hoping somehow the touch could become medicine. The clock showed 1:15 a.m. No one had spoken since my father left several hours ago.“Are you still awake?” I asked in a soft voice.“Yeah,” Liam replied without turning. “I don’t think I can sleep tonight.”I nodded. Neither could I.I took a long breath and said, “I kind of wished there was another doctor who could make this decision for us.”Liam gave a bitter smile. “I wished that too. But that would just be a coward’s wish.”“Am I a coward?” I whispered.“No. You’re a mother. You’re terrified because you love her. That’s not cowardly.”I rested my head on the bed near Elena’s

It was almost nine at night when the hospital room door was suddenly knocked three times. I thought a nurse was coming for routine checks, but the moment the door opened, my whole body froze. My father was standing there. It had been a long time since I last saw him wearing a lab coat, clean white, carrying that distinctive scent of a research facility. His eyes were sharp as usual, but there was clear restlessness hidden behind them.“Dad?” my voice barely came out.Liam stood from his chair, straightening his posture reflexively as if he realized something big was happening. My father walked in without saying much, closed the door, then looked at Elena who was still lying weakly with an IV line in her tiny hand.“How is she?” my father asked.“Her fever has gone down, but her body is still weak because of the silvermoon effect,” Liam answered, trying to remain professional. My father nodded slowly, then opened the small black bag he had brought with him. Inside it was a vial filled

Elena was moved from the ER to the pediatric ward about an hour later. Her fever had started to go down, but her body was still weak and pale. An IV line was attached to her tiny hand, and every time I looked at it, my chest tightened as if it were being crushed from the inside.I sat beside her bed, gently stroking the back of her hand.“Sweetheart, Mama is here, don’t be scared, okay?”Liam stood at the end of the bed, anxiously monitoring the devices. He had already removed his surgical equipment and put on his doctor’s coat, but his expression was nothing like his usual cold professionalism. His face looked like a father terrified of losing his child. But even though things had calmed down a little, my mind was getting worse. The effect of silvermoon poison. The poison that was never supposed to touch Elena. If it weren’t because of me back then…If the incident had not happened to me…If my body had never been exposed to silvermoon…Maybe Elena would not be like this right now.I

The next day, I woke up earlier than usual. The first surgery was scheduled to start at eight and I wanted to have enough time to prepare everything without rushing. After showering and doing simple makeup, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I smiled a little, not because I looked pretty, but because it still felt strange to realize that I was now a real surgeon and married to the busiest surgeon in this hospital, Liam.“I’m leaving first,” I said while putting on my shoes.Liam, still struggling with his tie, only nodded while letting out a small laugh.“Wait for me in my office later, we’ll have lunch together.”“Are you sure? Isn’t your schedule crazy today?” I asked.“For my wife, I always have time.”I pretended to fix my hair so he would not see my face turning red.Arrival at the hospital. The hospital was busy as usual, nurses going back and forth, the sound of fast footsteps in the hallway, and the familiar smell of antiseptic. I clipped my ID card to my chest and walke

That night passed quietly. But deep inside, I knew our lives were entering a new chapter. I had graduated as a surgeon, and soon I would work full time as a consultant. But before that, I had several weeks with no schedule, no rounds, no operations. And for the first time in years, I could breathe without being chased by time. The next morning, I woke up not because of an alarm, not because of a hospital emergency call, but because of Elena’s gentle kiss on my cheek.“Mommy wake up, Mommy promised to play with Elena,” she said softly.I smiled and touched her hair. “I remember. Today we will play all day.”She hugged me tightly, then rushed to her room to get her doll. I went downstairs, and the smell of coffee was already filling the room. Liam was preparing breakfast, still wearing a black T-shirt and sweatpants. No doctor’s coat, no formal Alpha attire. Just Liam, my husband.“Did you sleep well?” he asked without turning around.“For the first time in a long time,” I replied as I
