He turned his head to the guard.

"Leave, this instant," he cpmmandes, his voice flat and cold as a sheet of ice.

The guard scrambled to his feet, not daring to meet anyone's eyes, and immediately rushed to the door.

The sound of the heavy thud of the door closing sent my nerves on alert, followed by the definitive clank of the lock, sealing us in.

The sound coiled in my gut.

I wasn't supposed to be this nervous.

My plan was to provoke him, to make his rage so much that he would simply end

  • CRY OR BETTER YET, BEG   REMEMBER

"You don't remember me?" I asked. He shook his head helplessly. "No. I honestly don't remember what I was like before, or anything about you. The doctor said I suffered brain damage before, and now this… this makes it worse. It will take years to recover. I promised I would ask more questions, and I will try to remember—" "Don't." I snapped, cutting him off. He paused, looking up at me with those lost eyes. "It doesn't matter," I said, my voice breaking. "It's better you don't remember. It's so much worse than you can imagine. So please… don't remember it." "Okay." He whispered softly. I broke down crying this time without holding back. He rose slowly to his feet, his expression shifting to one of helpless concern. "Hey… I'm sorry. Please, you don't have to cry. Ms… Ms…?" He didn't even remember my name. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut, and I cried harder, unsure what to do anymore… laugh… be happy… be sad… it was overwhelming. "I'm sorry, Titan," I cried

  • CRY OR BETTER YET, BEG   LOST

"Please, I mean no harm! Please!" he pleaded, and there it was this look of fear in his eyes, completely different from the cold man I had known. "Daddy!" Max cried out, reaching toward him with chubby little fingers. Daddy? I glanced down at Max in shock. How? How was he already calling him Daddy? How is he already attached to him? The officers were dragging him toward the door, and something inside me cracked. "Wait!" I shouted. Mrs. Courtney turned to me, her eyes wide with concern. "What's wrong?" I swallowed hard, my throat burning with unshed tears. "Can I have a word with him? Alone, please? It's... it's complicated." A sob escaped my lips before I could stop it, and I pressed my hand to my mouth, trying to hold back the flood. The officer glanced at Mrs. Courtney, seeking approval. She studied me for a long moment,. "Are you sure about this?" she asked quietly. I nodded, my lips pressed into a thin, trembling line. "I will take Max with us...

  • CRY OR BETTER YET, BEG   POOR WOMAN

No matter how hard I tried to piece it together, the puzzle refused to solve itself. Why had Venom suddenly appeared at our doorstep and it's not even Christmas? And not just for a fleeting visit—she'd announced she was staying for a week. I sighed, as I pulled into the kindergarten parking lot. The engine died and I dragged myself out of the car, my legs feeling like they were wading through cement. Max's second day of school. Unlike yesterday, when I'd picked him up from the front entrance with his teacher, today I was instructed to retrieve him from inside his classroom. A small change, right? Yet it prickled at my skin with unease. I was halfway to Max's classroom when I spotted his teacher, Mrs. Courtney, coming through the door. "Hello, Mrs. Courtney," I said, forcing a smile. She looked up, her expression shifting into something I couldn't quite read. "Hello... you're Max's mom, right?" The question caught me off guard. Of course I'm Max's mom. Who else wou

  • CRY OR BETTER YET, BEG   HIS HAPPY ENDING

My heart skipped, and my eyes widened. "What?! I am so happy for you, Phoebe." "Yeah, I called you to share the good news with you," Daniel said. "Aww, congrats Daniel, and you too, Phoebe." "Thanks," they both said and kissed. "How is Emily?" I asked. "She's doing very well. We're arranging for her to come over there and stay with you for some time," Daniel replied. "I'm glad to hear that. I'm sure Max will be very happy to see her. I told him about her and showed him her pictures. When's the wedding? Is the date already fixed?" "Not yet," Phoebe answered, her voice filled with excitement. "But we've already started discussing it." Daniel smiled at her. "She says she wants a small wedding." Phoebe turned to him with a playful look. "I said I wanted an intimate wedding. There's a difference." "Intimate?" Daniel chuckled. "You showed me a guest list with over a hundred names." "Those are important people." "Apparently, everyone you have ever met is important." Sh

  • CRY OR BETTER YET, BEG   HE PROPOSED

The drive home was filled with Max's chatter about his first day at school. It was going well until he started singing a nursery rhymes about Daddy and Mommy. One of my fears about him starting school was him seeing other kids with their fathers. By the time I pulled into the driveway, the sun was beginning its slow descent, casting a warm golden glow over the house. I killed the engine and sat there for a moment, watching Max in the rearview mirror. He had finished his snacks and was humming a little tune to himself. "Come on, baby. Let's get you inside." I unbuckled his car seat, lifted him out, and balanced him on my hip as I grabbed my bag and his backpack. Opening the front door, Grandma was already walking toward us with her hands wide open. "Max!" She said it delightedly, her face lit with that special kind of joy she reserved only for Max. "Grandma!" Max squirmed in my arms, reaching for her. He refers to her as Grandma, and Grandma happily accepted that titl
