KIENA

"Ms. Vocci, last daughter of Alpha Dimitri, do you bind yourself to this man? To fight with, support, give heirs, and become flesh and blood with him, till death do you part?"

Xhecon stares at me expectantly, an air of arrogant dominance pouring off him in violent waves. I can feel the stillness of the air as the entire combination of Whitevalley and Dark forest packs hold their breaths in anticipation.

My response would be the key to securing an alliance that benefits no one but the Alphas involved, at least that's what it seems like to me.

My mouth moves before I can stop it. "No." The sound is feeble though, barely audible even in the hush of the cathedral.

I know the exact moment the pack priest catches my response. His breath hitches and his eyes widen to very large proportions. I would laugh, but that would mean death so...

"What did you just say?" Xhecon asks in a cold hum, his voice menacingly low.

I square my shoulders and raise my chin defiantly. I did say I would rather die than be forced into this mating sham, so here goes.

"I said no. I refuse to be mated, or bound if we're speaking more accurately, to Alpha Xhecon. I am not a trade piece."

Collective gasps ring out in the room, and my father booms in fury. "Kiena Vocci! I forbid you from going against your Alpha." He adds in a much lower tone, one that is supposed to be terrifying but really isn't; "That is an offence punishable by death."

"That is only if I am a member of that pack, father. I denounce the Whitevalley pack from this day, I am no longer one of your subjects."

Father's eyes are round in shock, his lips parted on an exclamation that would never have voice.

"You would not survive a day as a rogue, Kiena." Xhecon threatens softly from beside me.

"There's only one way to find out."

All of the panic I thought I had shoved aside comes back swarming in, clawing at my throat with renewed strength. Holy shit!

I didn't just! Did I just? Oh hell! Well fuck! Oh my...!

Before the exclamations finish fighting for dominance in my head, I dash off; racing away from the alter with a burst of speed no one anticipated.

"After her. Now!" Father commands as I race away from the ruined ceremony.

Footsteps ring out after me as trained hunters from our pack dive after me in hot pursuit.

I might not be trained, but I am sneaky, and my being annoyingly small gives me a lot of bonus points when it comes to running away. I know, I've tried.

I make it out of the building and head in the direction of the parked vehicles, but run straight into a wall. A very warm, very moving wall.

"What the fuck! Can't a girl just..?" The words die in my throat as a pair of rough hands grab hold of my shoulders, halting my fall.

My eyes rise on their own accord, passing by an impressively toned chest and working their way up to a set of muscular shoulders, over a strong neck, angled chin, somewhat hollow cheeks, chiseled jaws, until they come to a stop on a pair of obsidian orbs; staring down at me with cold intensity.

Holy shit! What in the name of masculine perfection is this?

"Step away from the girl." The command is low but firm, coming from one of the dimwits that had been sent after me.

"I am not going back in there with you, go back and tell them you lost me." My response is out even before I completely spin around to face him.

"They would smell my lie even before I completely told it, so please do not be an orchestrator of my death and come with me." His voice holds a pleading note, one that immediately reminds me of the terror that prompted my fleeing in the first place.

"Then tell them the truth. I sent you away because I am no longer a member of the pack and do not answer to any of them."

"He would do no such thing," Dad says as he steps outside with an enraged Xhecon by his side. "I must have spoilt you silly, that is why you think you have the right to make decisions on impulse and run away from your mating ceremony."

A laugh bubbles out of me, dry and humourless. "I don't think you can imitate the act of spoiling if you tried, at least not with me. I'm sure Zara can relate though, remind me again why she is not here?"

"Who is the man holding onto you?" Xhecon asks, ignoring my argument with my father, and drawing my attention to the tower of heat I had all but forgotten.

The obsidian-eyed god, who had been silent during the whole exchange responds. "Zedane Rhage, Alpha of the blackwater pack."

His voice is delicious, it sounds like the undercurrents of rumbling thunder; starting from his belly and vibrating its way through his chest and out his throat. I would moan just from the sound of it, if the circumstances were different.

Xhecon smiles a devilish smile at the introduction, "You grew quick."

"As would be expected of every healthy pup."

What the fuck? Am I hearing things clearly? Is he so young that Xhecon knew him as a pup? How old exactly is Xhecon?

Xhecon chuckles quietly, the sound ringing with the promise of violence. It's all the man knows.

"Nice to see you again after so many years, Zedane, but I'm afraid you have to step away from the girl. We have unfinished business." He says the last part with his eyes locked on mine, and I work really hard to suppress a shiver.

"It pains me to inform you of how I am unable to carry out that request." Is that humour I hear in Zedane's voice?

"Excuse you?" Xhecon asks.

"I cannot let Kiena go."

Wait what? Did he just say my name? He knows my name? Is this the right time to freak out over that fact? Because I'm freaking the fuck out.

"Why?" Both Dad and Xhecon question in unison.

"Because she is my mate."

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    SHE'S HERE!!

KIENAWhat in the name of the moon goddess is that? I have seen wolves before, Alpha wolves as well, and while they might all have deathly fangs that can make you piss your pants in fright, this is different. There's something less animally about the fangs in the Zedane's mouth. They look more refined. More like they are meant for poking holes than shredding skin. The fear that slams into me this time is pure and undiluted, pushing my arousal down a drain I didn't even know existed until this moment. He notices the terror on my face, and I swear his smile broadens. “Don't fight me, little poison. It turns me on. And you don't want to see what happens when I am turned on by fear.”There's a hint of psychopathy in the way he utters those words. His red gaze travels over the skin on my neck.“Do you want me to bite? I know you taste good. I tasted you already.” He swipes his tongue over his bottom lip and releases a sound that could be considered a moan if it didn't vibrate through the w

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    WHAT IN THE WORLD?

KIENANothing says terror like the look on Zedanes's face as I stand in the doorway of his room. For once, I regret not listening to someone's advice. His eyes are a dark shade of red, veins pulsing from the hands he has clenched so tightly I fear they might snap. He inches one slow inch after another in my direction, and I retreat.“What are you doing, Zedane? Knock it out.” I admonish. “You're hurting the pack, and that's not how an Alpha should treat the wolves under his command.”A low growl emanates from his chest, vibrating through the air and causing fear to grip me like a vise around the throat.“My venom.” His lips part in a smile that sends chills racing along my spine.“Excuse me? What venom? Were you poisoned?”He shakes his head, as though he's trying to clear it, and he takes a step backward; face devoid of the lunacy I met when I first walked in.Tentatively, I walk in his direction, offering him support because despite my feelings towards the man, I know for a fact tha

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    DEFINITELY PAIN

ZEDANEEverything is wrong. Taste, smell, sight; all of it. A haze of madness cloaks my mind, pushing every last ounce of sanity out of my grasp. I shake my head in an attempt to clear the fog that’s sitting over my thoughts and everything else. The plate in front of me is swiped off the table with a violent growl that shakes the roof of the manor, sending terror through every nook and cranny. I hate losing control. It takes me back to a time where all I knew was vulnerability. My breaths come out in short pants, anger and helplessness struggling for dominance inside me. I can’t succumb to the feeling that is struggling to drag me under and spit me out only after it has had its way with me.“Are you okay, Alpha?” A voice I can vaguely register asks from somewhere around me, but I can’t force a response out for their sake – or mine. The winds howl in protest as I battle against the pull of insanity. The draw of lust on me is becoming more powerful with each breath I take and I let out

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    ANGER OR PAIN?

KIENAIt's been a whole month, one entire month since I got back to the pack, and that douchebag Alpha wolf, who should also be my mate, has been treating me to the coldest set of shoulders I've ever seen.He barely speaks to me, matter of fact, we barely even cross parts. But like the idiot that I am, I run outside hoping to catch a glimpse of him after I heard his enraged howl, but once again I'm met with cold eyes, curt words and an all round disinterest in anything that concerns me.I step out of the shower feeling even worse than I had when I stepped in. I don't even understand why my wolf is intent of not speaking to me, yet overpowering me with her excessive emotions. Like the very unnecessary guilt I'm feeling right now, even though he has made it clear that he was only concerned for his pack and not me.My head snaps in the direction of the door as a knock rings out. "Who's there?""Lina." The tiny voice on the other side of the door calls back.I sigh as I walk over and pull

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    ROGUE ATTACK

ZEDANEIt's been a whole month since I found Kiena lying half-dead beneath the bushes that were cut into a makeshift tent for her. Whoever it was that took her wanted me to find her, and probably dead too.I can still taste the dangerous flavor of fear that had cloaked me after I found her in that position. It was something I had succeeded in preventing for well over a decade, almost two, but in a single moment, a woman was able to bring it right back."Are you even here?" Lunil asks along the bond we share with the pack.My eyes snap in the direction that his mental voice came from and our eyes lock on each other. I nod once to let him know that all is well and then pick up the pace, but he isn't far behind."You don't look like all is well with you. You've let the same rabbit run past you twice without so much as blinking in its direction, and that's very unlike you. You're an exceptionally skilled hunter, something has to be wrong if you're missing game like that."I cut him a glar

  • CURSE OF THE HYBRID ALPHA    BACK HOME

KIENAMy eyes feel heavy but I force them open, feeling the pressure in my head intensify as my body begins to stir awake. The endless dabble between consciousness and unconsciousness has left me feeling drained and weary. My mind vaguely registers the fact that Zedane is still sitting beside my bed. I wonder how long he has been in that position. He thrusts a glass of water in my direction. "Here. Have a drink."I close my eyes shut again. I can't stand the cold intensity of his gaze right now. I'm already in enough pain as it is, and the fact that I cannot even remember anything that happened after I was plucked up in front of the gates makes it all that worse."This isn't the time to play childish games, Kiena. Have something to drink, we need to have a talk." Just like his eyes, his voice is also steel hard and devoid of emotions, except maybe anger.I try to get into a sitting position after I manage to pry my eyes open, but a groan works its way through me an I slink back down,
