The door clicks shut behind me, and for a moment, I just stand there in the dark hallway. My lips still tingle, heat ghosting where his mouth had been. The air feels heavier now — like the walls themselves are holding their breath, waiting to see what I’ll do next.

I move quietly back to my room. The corridor hums faintly with the low buzz of lights and faraway footsteps. By the time I reach my door, my pulse has almost steadied — until I see the shape waiting inside.

Kade.

He’s standing near the window, arms crossed, half in shadow. The tension in his shoulders is unmistakable. He turns when I shut the door behind me.

“Where were you?” His voice is low, sharp, but there’s something else underneath it — worry. “I checked the hall. You were gone. I thought—” He cuts himself off, jaw flexing. “I thought you might’ve done something stupid.”

I step past him, pretending calm. “I went to check on Vex.”

The shift in his expression is instant — realization, then anger flickering behind

KADE POVThe office is quiet—too quiet. The kind of silence that seeps under your skin and won’t let go.The club smells like espresso, gun oil, and control. My kind of place. Usually. But today, nothing feels steady. The morning paper lies open across my desk, the ink still fresh.Front page—Vex Maddock and his new wife, lips locked in a kiss under the Mediterranean sun.The photo is perfect.Too perfect. Her hand on his chest. His fingers cupping her jaw like she’s something fragile. The caption below makes my stomach twist:“Maddock Heir and Bride Seal Their Alliance Abroad.”I don’t even realize I’ve crumpled the page until my knuckles ache.My phone buzzes. Another message from the press team. All statements approved. No comment from Mr. Maddock until his return.I shove the phone aside. The world thinks it’s a fairytale honeymoon. They don’t see what it really is—an arrangement built on lies and survival. And yet, seeing her there—smiling, in his orbit—makes something dark curl

VEX POVMy jaw tightens at her words.“Convincing. Right.”I exit the car the moment we arrive, coming around to Brynn’s door—but I don’t offer my hand this time. The small gesture feels too intimate now. Too dangerous.“You’ve given the watchers what they needed to see. Your brother will have his proof of life.”I take a deliberate step back, forcing space between us I desperately need.“I’ll be in meetings for the remainder of the day. Don’t leave the villa grounds.”I turn to walk away, but something ugly twists in my chest, dragging the words out of me.“That kiss crossed a line, Brynn.”A beat.“Don’t do it again.”I don’t wait for her response. Distance is the only way I keep control.Hours pass. The villa sinks into silence—the soft thud of waves against stone, the distant echo of footsteps from the night patrol.I stand at the terrace railing, staring out over the darkening sea, the Mediterranean wind threading through my hair. But all I can feel are her lips. The taste of ras

BRYNN POVMorning light filters through the open balcony doors, carrying the scent of salt and jasmine.A soft knock precedes Lila’s voice.“Miss? Mr. Maddock asked me to inform you that breakfast is served on the lower terrace.”“Tell him I’m not coming today.”Silence lingers on the other side of the door before she replies quietly, “Of course, Miss. I’ll let him know.”Her footsteps fade down the hall.Twenty minutes later, another knock—firmer this time—cuts through the quiet.Vex’s voice follows, low and clipped. “We need to talk. Now.”The doorknob rattles, but the lock holds. His tone drops, sharp with restrained frustration.“Brynn. Open the door.”I sigh and swing it open. “What, Vex? I want to sleep in.”He stands there, crisp in dark slacks and a white button-down, sleeves rolled up, eyes immediately scanning my sleep-rumpled state.“Sleep in?” he repeats, holding up his phone. “It’s nearly noon. And your brother’s been messaging.”He turns the screen toward me.“Apparently

BRYNN POVVex steps into the room, his presence instantly changing the air. He doesn’t come far—just inside the doorway—but it’s enough. His gaze sweeps over everything: the unmade bed, the open balcony doors, the ashtray crowded with cigarette butts. Evidence of sleepless nights. Of nerves.“I meant what I said,” he begins, voice low, measured. “Three years. Then you’re free.”He drags a hand through his hair—an uncharacteristic slip, a rare tell of uncertainty.“But freedom in our world isn’t simple,” he continues. “When this arrangement ends, you’ll need protection. Resources.”His jaw flexes. “Your brother won’t welcome you back. Not after this. And Moretti’s people have long memories.”He finally meets my eyes. “I need to know what you want—after. Where you’ll go. How you plan to survive.”I exhale slowly, forcing calm I don’t feel. “If I’m not dead, I’d like a quiet town. A new country. I’ve saved money. I’ll fake my death, change my name… something like that.”His expression da

  • Cage to Cage   Dinner Part 2

BRYNN POVI enter the dining room on Elena’s arm, every conversation stalling the second we step inside.Vex straightens in his seat, eyes locking on me instantly. The faintest flicker passes through his expression—approval, possession, maybe both. He stands, pulling out the chair beside him. His hand brushes mine as I sit, the brief contact sending heat straight through me.Stavros lifts his glass, voice rich and commanding.“ To new beginnings—and profitable partnerships.”Crystal clinks fill the air. The dinner unfolds with orchestrated elegance—course after course of Mediterranean delicacies appearing as if by magic. Conversation flows easily among the men, though every word feels like part of a larger negotiation.Under the table, Vex’s hand finds my knee. His touch is possessive yet controlled, fingers resting right where the slit of my dress parts against my thigh. I can feel the burn of it, even through the silk.Andreas leans forward, eyes sharp with curiosity.“Mrs. Maddock,

  • Cage to Cage   Dinner part 1

BRYNN POV I sit for a while, staring out over the water. The last of my wine warms my throat before I set the glass aside and move toward the boat. Lately, my thoughts keep circling the same end. My death. Since the wedding, I’ve known it was coming. Maybe not today. Maybe not soon. But it’s inevitable. Wives in our world don’t survive long—not ones who fall in love with men like Vex Maddock. He can try to stop it, but fate always finds a way. I’ll die at the hands of a crime lord. That’s how stories like mine end. The boat rocks gently in the hush that stretches between us. Vex stands at the bow, back rigid, staring into the endless blue. Dried blood clings to his hand, but he doesn’t move to clean it. The captain murmurs something in Greek. Vex answers without looking up. The engines rumble to life. “We’re returning to the villa,” he says, his tone clipped, professional—every trace of emotion buried deep. As the boat turns toward home, our eyes meet across the deck. For a h
