He had said it was simple.

When Caleb had told her the mating ritual was much simpler than she thought, Cassandra had expected it would be as simple and unceremonious as Kylie's mating with Roy. She had assumed it would be just the two of them in a private space, declaring their love for each other as Caleb marked her.

With the preparations that had gone on leading up to the day, she became more and more convinced that such simplicity would not occur for her.
