“Well, I deserve a Luna who can bring power and recognition to my pack. But you gave me neither. So I don't need a fat, useless Luna demanding I don't sleep with other women.” My husband’s cruel words made my body turn cold. My Alpha husband, Ethan, had cheated on me for months with different women while I had been busy rebuilding his rundown pack as his dutiful Luna. Turns out, he expected me to accept his infidelity. He believed I was a weak, fat omega and that I should be grateful he had chosen me in the first place. But he didn’t know my true identity. I was the secret daughter of the Lycan Queen. My mother had given me three years to prove that Ethan was the right choice for me. If I failed, I would have to reject him and accept the prospect she had chosen for me. But Ethan pushed me beyond my breaking point. I rejected him and accepted my mother’s proposal to marry Adrian Blackwood, a dangerous, cold-hearted Lycan who turned out to be my mate. Also, Ethan wasn’t done with me. Not yet.

1: Betrayal

Aaira

“Aaira, the three-year deadline ends this month and your incompetent Alpha husband failed to prove himself worthy! Divorce him immediately and return home as you promised!” My mother, the Lycan Queen of Vaelan, warned me over the phone.

Three years ago, my mother made a deal with me. If I refused her arranged marriage prospect and chose Alpha Ethan, I must keep it a secret. That I am the daughter of the powerful Queen Isadora.

Ethan would need to prove that he and his poor pack could earn her approval. Otherwise, I would have to end the marriage.

Despite feeling sick in the hospital bed from a terrible fever, I spoke with pride in my heart for my Alpha. “Mom, Ethan’s pack has risen to prominence since the mine business took off, and we’re hosting the Lunar Ball this weekend to mark the occasion. Many distinguished Alphas and Lunas will be in attendance, and I’m calling to extend your invitation.”

I forced the tremor out of my voice, though the fever made my bones ache. I didn’t want my mother to know that as Luna, I’d spent sleepless months mapping out every strategy, driving to other packs to win their Alphas over to our alliance. Even as my body finally betrayed me and I woke up in a hospital bed, I convinced myself it was all worth it.

“Is that so? Well then, I will surely attend it. I hope he doesn’t disappoint me.”

She hung up before I could reply, but I didn’t mind. A smile curved my lips as I pictured her surprise when she arrived and saw the pack’s power. She’d realize that I’d chosen well, even if Ethan was never her favorite.

My excitement was short-lived when I saw a message on my phone from an anonymous number.

“Your husband was spotted with a woman inside the exclusive Velvet Den stripper club.”

My eyes widened. This must be a rumor to tarnish the Alpha’s reputation. Ethan would never spend the pack’s resources on something so lewd and betray me, especially at this critical time.

Yet when our pack’s Delta came to the hospital to drive me back home, I asked him to take me to the club. Ray didn’t question me despite looking worried and drove me to that location. I trusted Ethan, but I wanted to know why someone would send me this message.

I walked into the club and immediately wanted to walk back out. The air was thick with cologne and alcohol, barely dressed dancers working the poles while the crowd watched with open hunger. I was about to leave when a familiar smell stopped me cold: Ethan’s. It was coming from upstairs.

The security guards finally let me through after I reminded them I was the Luna of this pack. I stepped into the dim corridor, and there it was: Ethan’s scent, unmistakable, bleeding from a suite further down. The door was ajar, just enough that I could hear the voices inside.

“You’ve been fucking other women for months, Ethan. What will Luna Aaira think if she learns of it?” It was the voice of one of his friends, Justin.

I stopped dead, thinking my ears had betrayed me. Then I saw him, Ethan, through the crack in the door, at a round glass table. A woman in a golden dress so skimpy it was barely there leaned into him, touching his chest, while his arm wrapped around her waist as if it were the most natural thing in the world. I couldn’t breathe.

I knew her. Rue Stanton, the daughter of our Gamma commander. She was touching my husband too intimately.

“I will make her understand. Aaira is easy and obedient to a fault, like every other she-wolf.” He commented, his blue eyes glinting with smug confidence.

“But what if she is not ready to share you with other women?” another friend of his, Tyler, asked with a slight look of discomfort.

Ethan scoffed, “Alphas of enormous packs keep several mistresses, and the Lunas are fine with it.” He squeezed Rue’s thigh, and she purred lightly. “She has no reason to complain since she gets to have all the luxury I provide and the pride of being my Luna,” he boasted.

The words landed like a blow, and my vision swam. I’d turned my back on my mother, walked away from my standing, given him everything and he’d been betraying me all along?!

Three years of love and sacrifice, and to him it was just... obedience.

Something cracked in my chest, and I felt sick. The lights blurred, the music pounded in my ears, and in the gaps between it, I could hear his friends mocking me.

“Honestly, who even cares what she thinks? A fatty like her should feel lucky that a handsome, capable Alpha like Ethan chose her as his Luna,” Justin smirked.

“True that. Just throw in some expensive gifts to that poor omega and she’d stay put. I do the same with my she-wolf.” Tyler replied.

“Now that our pack is hosting its first big event, Ethan will be respected by the entire Vaelan. He’d gain a lot of attention from the beautiful, unmated females. Fatty Aaira will have competition…” The friend sitting beside him, named Carl, joked, and they started laughing while Ethan smirked, basking in their attention and praise.

But my world was collapsing. I walked out of the and ordered Ray to drive me back home. The entire ride was a haze. It wasn’t until I shut the bedroom door that I finally let the tears come. The walls were soundproof, so no one’s heightened senses would hear my sobs. And that was good, because I knew they’d only laugh at me.

Suddenly, Beta Grayson’s impatient voice reached me through the mind-link. “Where are you, Aaira? There’s so much preparation left for the Lunar Ball, and I need you to speak to the Alphas who still seem reluctant to attend the event.”

I gritted my teeth. Despite all my efforts to build an excellent reputation for our pack, Ethan’s disrespectful behavior would get under some Alpha’s skin and cause rifts within our plans. I had lost count of the number of times I had to listen to their insults while keeping my head lowered, all just for him.

My blood boiled as I wiped my tears. I wasn’t going to let him walk all over me while I sacrificed everything for him.

“Tell your Alpha to convince them to attend the Ball since he’s the one who made the mess.” I replied coldly.

“What?” Beta Grayson sounded shocked by my defiance. “But—”

“Oh, and tell Ethan I am not his maid!” I hissed. “I will not take on every responsibility of the Lunar Ball while he sits there and enjoys himself. He can arrange the tables and help the omegas with the menu himself!” I cut the mind-link before Grayson could argue.

Almost an hour later, I was staring out the bedroom window, pain pressing against my chest, when the doors flew open and Ethan stormed in. He seized my wrist and spun me around to face him. His eyes, so full of pride at the club, now burned with rage.

“I heard from Grayson that you’ve refused to work on the preparations for the Lunar Ball. Have you lost your mind?!”

Before I could respond, he cut me off. “You won’t believe it, but the Lycan Queen has just accepted our invitation to the Ball!” The anger in his gaze shifted to excitement. “Good heavens! I never thought I’d be lucky enough to see her in person.”
