Chapter 3

Author: Vera Claire
My head buzzed as I read what they posted.

The ordinary conversations we had shared over the past two months had been maliciously cropped, spliced together, and pasted alongside sinister black captions.

More than a dozen screenshots painted me as a habitual plagiarist, claiming that I had rudely demanded "guidance fees" and a share of the prize money.

They even accused me of saying disgusting, suggestive things to Sylvester. They made it look like I was hinting covertly that I wanted to sleep with him.

What enraged me even more was that even the transfer records had been mirrored and photoshopped. The 5,000 dollars I had once transferred to him had somehow turned into money he had sent me as payment to get me to leave him alone.

I immediately tried to explain myself. But when I clicked "Send", I realized the administrators had restricted my account. Every function was disabled.

Forget replying, I couldn't do anything at all.

Then, I remembered Sylvester mentioning before that one of the admins was his roommate.

My WhatsApp chimed a few times. Sylvester sent me a laughing sticker, followed by a series of texts.

"You saw everything, right? Honestly, when you think about it, this is all your fault."

"Ever since you joined the group, you kept saying this wasn't good enough, and that was too carelessly done. You forced us to refine the financial model over and over. Taylor's timid. You made her cry more than once."

"Zander wanted to make the market growth rate look better, but you insisted that 50% wasn't realistic and forced him to use a conservative 15%. He was so pissed that he smashed his mouse in the dorm."

"You're just a student too. We're just flattering you by regarding you as our senior. But you really started taking yourself way too seriously."

"To be honest, we've been sick of your bossing us around for a long time. If it weren't for you, our project would've been way better."

Before I could reply, every single one of his messages was deleted.

Posting on the forum first had been a preemptive strike to prevent me from reporting them. Now, his retracting everything was just to avoid leaving evidence behind.

I had truly underestimated them. From the very beginning, they had already been planning how to kick me out.

"Sylvester, aren't you afraid something will happen at the finals tomorrow?"

"Are you still trying to scare me?"

That message was quickly withdrawn.

Then, he sent another, "But you did remind me of something. Jolene Zimmerman, you'd better not show up at the finals tomorrow. Otherwise, we'll post all the ultimate material that we've prepared. You're a woman, after all. You wouldn't want your reputation ruined, would you?"

My reputation?

I saved the screen recording on my phone and reread the post they had made. Starting with the team leader, Sylvester, and followed by the other five members, all of them poured out their grievances online.

They said I was a dictator. Then, they said I had borrowed money from several of them. And when they refused to lend it to me, I had lashed out at them.

As if that wasn't enough, they even wanted to destroy my reputation too.

But tomorrow was the finals. As one of the judges, why couldn't I show up at the venue?

On the day of the finals, someone shoved me hard and dragged me into a corner the moment I walked into the presentation hall.

"You really have a death wish. We told you not to come, and you still showed up."

The one who pushed me was Zander.

Sylvester stood next to him, dressed in a business suit and looking sharp. He was ready to go onstage.

He looked me up and down from head to toe, then smacked his lips lewdly. "Tsk. You look pretty average in photos, but your figure's not bad. I'll play with you some other time."

He continued, giving me a warning, "You'd better leave now. If you don't, we'll add a little more 'content' to that post."

I looked around at them one by one and realized how completely different they were from the sunny smiles in the group photo. It was a sharp reminder to myself that I couldn't judge people by photos anymore. Otherwise, I'd just keep inviting this kind of trouble.

"Sylvester, we can talk about the post later. But right now, please step aside. The finals are about to begin."

All six of them wore expressions of open contempt. Not a single one moved.

Helen gasped, and her eyes widened in shock. "That money was from you? That's impossible! Sylvester said it was his scholarship!"I let out a cold laugh. "A scholarship? Do you think he has the ability to land one? Seriously, if he and his team had taken the entrepreneurship competition seriously, they might have won something. "Of course, it would be unrealistic for them to win the 1.5 million dollars. But they could have won a prize of ten thousand dollars for the team."Helen's lips trembled, and her face turned even paler. My neighbors finally understood what had happened and shot her looks of disgust."This isn't a minor offense at all. Professor Zimmerman is right. She and her son are ingrates.""You've already taken advantage of Professor Zimmerman, and you're still asking for more. No wonder your son went to jail. He deserved it."Everyone dispersed. My housemate and I stepped past Helen and continued on our way.As Sylvester had attempted assault but didn't commit the

Because of this incident, I became infamous on campus.Once my student account was unbanned, people dug through my past posts. They discovered that every single comment I had made was sincere guidance, including the messages I'd left for Sylvester's team before I ever joined them.Students flooded the forum, cursing Sylvester and the others for being heartless and for wasting such an opportunity. At the same time, I received countless private messages from people asking me about coursework and sharing their startup ideas. But that account had accumulated too much negativity. I deleted it and kept only my account as a faculty member. I made a new post on the forum, saying that if anyone had questions, they could leave them there, and I would reply whenever I saw them.Seven days later, everyone except Sylvester was released from detention.I didn't withdraw the lawsuit. I hired a lawyer and had formal legal notices sent to all of them. As the AI-generated pornographic images they

I stopped the police and said, "There's one more piece of evidence, which is the hallway surveillance footage. Before the competition, Sylvester locked me in the men's restroom with improper intentions."In addition to the malicious slander and defamation, I will also be pressing charges for attempted sexual assault."Sylvester broke out in a cold sweat and nearly fainted on the spot. Slander and spreading rumors were verbal offenses, and he could still claim it had been a momentary lapse of judgment. But attempted sexual assault was a very real criminal charge. He stammered, "I… I didn't mean to! It was… It was Zander and Charlotte who said Jolene liked me, and that she joined the group because of me. That's why I—"Zander lost his temper and threw a punch at him. "What the hell are you talking about? You were the one who got horny first! You said Jolene had a great body, and she was better than any girlfriend you'd ever had. You said you wanted to get a feel of her!"And did yo

My voice boomed in the hall through the speakers. "I made it very clear that it could be used for ordinary coursework, but it absolutely could not be used in a competition. Not only did you ignore that, but you struck first by fabricating malicious rumors to ruin my reputation. "You even locked me in a restroom before the opening and attempted to assault me!"The moment I finished speaking, an uproar erupted both on and off the stage.Sylvester's legs shook so badly that he nearly toppled backward in front of everyone. The other five members of his team recoiled just as quickly. But the stage wasn't that big. There was nowhere for them to run.The college president, Donald Gardner, hurried over with a very grave expression. "Sylvester, is what Professor Zimmerman said true? Did you really do that?"Sylvester swallowed hard. He turned and tried to look to Zander for help, but every one of them had their heads lowered. No one dared to speak up.Left with no other choice, he clenc

When my name was announced, it wasn't just Sylvester and his gang waiting backstage who were stunned. The students seated behind them all froze in shock as well.Even from far away, whispers could be heard."Which Jolene? Is it the Jolene Sylvester talked about on the forum?""Wasn't she supposed to be a senior? How did she turn into an economics professor and the head judge?""Shh! Keep your voices down. There are cameras everywhere…"My phone was still in Zander's pocket. He was shaking just as badly. In a panic, he fumbled it out. The moment he saw the lock screen, his wrist went slack, and the phone clattered to the floor. When the others lowered their heads to look, they were terrified by the photo displayed on the screen. It was my master's graduation photo taken in front of Centura University."W-What do we do, Sylvester? She really is a judge…"Charlotte's legs went weak. Taylor bit her finger with tears streaming down her face.Only Sylvester seemed unable to hear any

The male student reminded everyone, "Hurry up, the competition's about to start. We're going first. Don't waste your time on her.""Exactly. We've got a real shot at winning today. Once we get that 1.5 million dollars, we'll be set!""Sylvester, you won't have to worry about your mom's medical bills anymore. Didn't you borrow ten thousand dollars from your relative? You can pay it all back."When someone mentioned the money, Sylvester's gaze darkened as he looked at me. So he'd never told anyone that the money had come from me.He said, "You guys go in and sign in first. I'll find a place to lock her up so she doesn't come out and cause trouble.""What? You can't—"Before I could finish, Sylvester suddenly clamped a hand over my mouth and forcibly dragged me into the men's restroom. I struggled desperately, trying to call for help. But when people passed by and saw it was me, they pointed with morbid interest instead."Did you see the group chat? She's the senior named Jolene wh
