Chapter 2

Author: Savannah Goode
Later that evening, Mom left.

Kaia turned toward Ivan, her eyes already brimming with tears.

"Ivan, I just got back, and I don't have anywhere to stay. Can I stay here? We're legally married now, after all."

Then she turned to me.

"Olivia, I think you should go stay at Marie's place instead. If people find out the other woman is sleeping in the marital home, they'll talk."

I glanced outside. It was already deep into the night, and I'd been afraid of the dark ever since I was a child.

I'd already decided to leave, but I wasn't about to put myself in danger just to prove a point.

"There's a spare bedroom," I said, looking at Ivan. "I'll stay there for tonight and move out first thing tomorrow morning."

At two in the morning, a sharp crack jolted me awake.

I opened my eyes to find Kaia standing beside my bed, surrounded by shattered emerald pieces.

It was the bracelet I'd taken off before bed.

"Olivia, I'm sorry," she said. "I just got up to use the bathroom and saw the bracelet glowing in the moonlight. It was so pretty. I only picked it up to look at it more closely. I didn't mean to drop it."

It was the family heirloom Dad had left me before he died.

When he suffered a sudden heart attack and was lying in the ICU, waiting for me to get there, I was still stuck at a dinner meeting because of work Ivan had asked me to handle.

The nurse later told me that even in his final moments, Dad had kept his eyes fixed on the window where visitors could see into his room.

After that, I never let the bracelet leave my side.

I only took it off at night because I was afraid of damaging it in my sleep, so I left it on the nightstand.

"Didn't your parents ever teach you not to touch things that don't belong to you?" I shouted, my lips trembling.

I threw off the covers and climbed out of bed, frantically picking up the broken pieces and trying to fit them back together to no avail.

Tears streamed down Kaia's cheeks.

"I really didn't mean it…"

"Get out!"

Ivan came running at the sound of my voice, just in time to see Kaia stumble back and hit the cabinet. He rushed over and caught her in his arms.

"Are you hurt?"

He checked her over again and again, making absolutely sure she hadn't injured herself.

I remembered when we'd first started dating. I'd been crossing the street when a car ran a red light and knocked me down.

When the nurse called Ivan, he sounded irritated.

"If you're sick, go see a doctor," he grumbled. "What do you need me for? I have an important international conference coming up. Don't bother me."

But now, Ivan's intent gaze was fixed on Kaia as he continued checking her for injuries.

So it wasn't that he didn't worry about me. He simply didn't care enough to worry about me.

"It's all my fault," Kaia murmured. "Don't blame Olivia."

When Ivan checked her lower back, she suddenly cried out in pain.

"You've probably got a bad bruise," he said, his expression darkening. "I'm taking you to the hospital."

Only then did he stand up and glance at me. That was when he noticed the cuts on my fingers from the shattered bracelet.

"There are bandages in the TV cabinet," he said after a brief pause. "Take care of it yourself."

"Ivan, the bracelet my dad left me is broken," I whispered, watching him turn to leave.

He stopped in his tracks. But as Kaia whimpered in pain the next second, he started walking again.

"I'll find someone to repair it for you."

"It's shattered," I said. "It can't be repaired anymore."

"Can you stop being unreasonable?" he snapped, turning around impatiently. "Kaia's back is injured. What if it causes lasting damage? How is she going to draw then? Can't you have a little compassion for others?"

I stared at the fragments scattered across my hands. They still gleamed beautifully in the moonlight, but it was such a shame that it wasn't a full moon tonight.

"I'm sorry," Kaia suddenly said. "I'll pay for the damage."

She struggled in Ivan's arms as she continued, "Ivan, you stay with Olivia. I'll take a cab to the hospital myself."

The movement pulled at her injury, and she cried out in pain.

But Ivan didn't stop.

"How could I? You just got back from abroad. You don't know your way around yet. If no one's there to look after you, you'll end up crying again."

As his voice faded down the hallway, my phone lit up in the dark room.

It was a message from my professor, Jeremy Sandler, asking me to sign the confirmation form.

I stood alone in the empty room and signed it without hesitation.

I turned around and saw Ivan. Honestly, I wasn't surprised that he'd found out where I was. What shocked me was that he'd actually come all the way here himself. The usually immaculate Ivan looked completely worn out. His perfectly styled hair was a mess, and his eyes were bloodshot from what looked like days of traveling without rest."What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice indifferent. "We're going back to get married!"He lunged toward me and reached for my wrist, but Colin immediately stepped in front of me, blocking his path.Ivan shot him a look. "You'd better stay out of this," he spat. "She's my wife!""Our marriage was fake," I said, stepping out from behind Colin. "You forged our marriage certificate yourself. Have you forgotten?"Ivan fell silent."That's why I came to bring you back," he said at last, his expression shifting. "Everything for the wedding ceremony is ready."I stared at him, then scoffed. "You want to have a wedding with me while you're l

The weekend came quickly, and I got up early that morning to get ready.Nancy stood beside me with a mischievous grin."Well, who is this gorgeous lady?" she said in a playful drawl. "Oh, wait. She's my friend!""Stop it."I turned and shot her a look. She pretended she'd been shot and collapsed dramatically onto the bed. "Goodness!" she cried. "You're so gorgeous, you literally knocked me out!"I was speechless. When Nancy realized I wasn't going to indulge her, she stopped fooling around and sat up straight."I'm not going to be there today, so you better behave," she said, her expression turning serious. "And don't start swooning over him like last time. You'll never hear the end of it if you embarrass yourself again.""Okay," I replied, exasperated. "I only froze up for a second last time. Do you really have to keep bringing it up?"I've explained it so many times. I'd just never met anyone like him before, so I didn't know how to react. I'm perfectly fine now. You ha

The plane glided through the clouds before making a smooth landing in Valenne. On the drive from the airport to the apartment Professor Sandler had arranged for us, the unfamiliar faces and people from all over the world were enough to make me forget everything that had been weighing on me back home.Professor Sandler was standing in the living room when we arrived, looking excited."You've all got three days off. Go out and explore the city. We'll start at the studio next Monday."My classmates cheered enthusiastically. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and I couldn't help but feel a thrill of my own.Nancy Jennings was in my year, and her work had inspired many of my paintings."Olivia, I've wanted to visit the Louvain in Valenne for ages. Let's go together tomorrow."The Louvain housed countless famous works of art and was practically a dream destination for art students. Just imagining seeing those masterpieces in person made my heart race. "Have you bought your ticket yet?

I didn't return that night. Ivan, on the other hand, didn't try to come after me. He was completely wrapped around Kaia's little finger. One day, they were off hiking together; the next, they were out doing interviews. They were so smitten with each other that they might as well have announced their marriage to the whole world. After all, they'd lost five years because of one reckless dare. It was only natural that they wanted to spend every possible moment together now.Meanwhile, Mom was relieved to see her daughter and the man she'd always approved of so happy together. But Kaia was still unhappy that, even though she and Ivan were already legally married, he still planned to go through with the wedding to me.One day, she tested the waters. "Ivan, I want a wedding too."Ivan had been indulging her every whim lately. The moment he heard that, he set his work aside and walked over to reassure her."Kaia, you've always been the only woman in my heart," he said gently. "T

For the sake of my studio's reputation and my own credibility, I had no choice but to ask the driver to turn back. But as soon as I arrived home, I overheard Mom talking to Kaia. "Kaia, you and Ivan got married before you left the country five years ago," she said. "Now that you're finally back, you should focus on building a life together. At least then I can finally give your father some peace of mind."My phone slipped from my hand and fell to the floor with a sharp clatter. The screen shattered. "No wonder," I thought. "So that's what this was."All this time, this was the truth. The front door opened, and the moment Mom, Kaia, and I locked eyes, everything became clear."Our wedding is still happening as planned," Ivan said, reaching for my hand. I stepped away from him. "So all along, you all knew I wasn't the other woman, yet you still let everyone believe I was," I ground out, staring at Mom—or perhaps I should call her Marie now."You always knew the truth abou

The next day, Kaia handed me a box. "Olivia, I'm sorry about what happened last night. Please accept this as an apology."Inside was a breathtakingly beautiful diamond bracelet. It sparkled under the light, and I could tell it was worth at least a few million dollars. "Ivan stayed up all night helping me pick it out," Kaia added, looking at me earnestly. "After everything we've been through, can't you just let this go?"I put the bracelet back into the box. "Did you pay for this yourself?"Kaia hesitated. "I just got back. I haven't even held my first exhibition yet, so I don't have any income.""So Ivan bought it.""Yes.""Then why are you presenting it as an apology from you?"Ivan finally lost his patience."Olivia, that's enough," he said, his expression darkening. "You know what Kaia and I are to each other. My money is practically hers."As I stared at his stone-cold expression, I remembered what happened before we decided to marry. He'd handed me a prenuptial agreem
