Mabel’s POV / Zane’s POV

“Why’d you bring me here?” I asked, my voice low.

Ronan dropped onto the grass beside me, not too close, not too far. A careful distance. His eyes flicked to the rocks behind us, then back to the wide lake in front.

“This is where I hide when I want peace,” he said.

The air smelled of damp earth and pine. The festival noise carried across the water, faint enough to feel unreal, like it belonged to another world.

I drew my knees to my chest and pressed my chin against them. “It’s quiet.”

“You like it?”

I gave a small nod. “It’s beautiful.”

Ronan leaned back on his palms. “I figured you’d appreciate it.”

He tried to sound casual, but I caught the way he kept glancing at me. Waiting. Wondering. I wasn’t in the mood to talk, but silence made him restless.

My eyes stayed on the rippling lake. If I let my mind go blank, the ache in my chest dulled. I had practiced that trick bac

Zane’s POV “Are you willing to come with me?” Zane asked, eyes locked on mine.I didn’t mean to answer so fast, but the word slipped out anyway. “Okay.”His smile deepened, and I felt my chest tighten.I slid off his lap, and he winced.“What’s wrong?” I asked quickly.“My legs are numb.”“Oh.” My face warmed. I had been sitting there too long. “Sorry.”He smirked. “If you’re really sorry, help me.”I reached out my hand, but he just stared at it.“What’s that for?” he asked.“To help you up.”“I can’t feel my legs. Unless you can carry me, there’s no point.”I frowned. “So… how do I help?”“Massage.” His tone was casual, but his eyes gleamed. “It’ll

Mabel’s POV"I'm sorry," I whispered, pulling back from Zane’s chest. His shirt was soaked through with my tears, clinging to him in a way that only reminded me of how long I’d been a mess in his arms. The embarrassment made my skin burn."There’s nothing for you to be sorry about, kitten," he said, brushing his thumb across my cheek. His voice was low, calm, almost gentle.I ducked my head, rubbing at my eyes with the back of my palm. "I ruined your shirt."Zane chuckled, though his eyes stayed serious. "That’s the least of my worries."I tried to breathe steadily, but the air still came out shaky. It had been years since I cried like that, maybe ever, and now the scary Alpha had held me through it. I wasn’t sure which part unsettled me more."I should’ve come back earlier," he said suddenly. "The meeting dragged longer than I thought."I blinked. "Meeting?"His

Mabel’s POV“I said leave.” Zane’s voice cut sharp, his hand pressing harder on Ronan’s shoulder.“And I said he stays.” My words came out steady, even though my chest was tight. His Alpha aura pushed like a heavy wall, but I refused to bow. Not this time.Zane’s eyes narrowed. If it weren’t for the space between Ronan and me, Zane would have torn him apart already. One wrong move and Ronan’s neck was gone.Ronan scrambled up, his shirt clinging to his back with sweat. He looked like someone had dumped a bucket of water on him. Every nerve in his body screamed danger, and he knew it.“I’m sorry, Mabel, but—”I hated that he was giving in. Not just to Zane’s order, but to the idea that Zane could walk in here and control everything. He wasn’t my boss. He wasn’t anyone’s boss outside his pack.Zane promised me he’d come to the festival. He didn’t. He promised me he’d show up. Instead, he disappeared with some random gir

Mabel’s POV“Where’s Navy?” I asked Iver, Otis, and Finch as we headed toward the main street where the parade would pass. They came into view without her, and even though I already knew the answer, I couldn’t help but ask.“We lost her at the seafood stand,” Otis said with a shrug.Finch grinned. “She wasn’t into barbequed squid. Nena and Nessa skipped that too, but at least they hung around.”I pressed my lips into a thin line, and Iver caught it.“You want to meet up with her? She’s probably on the rooftop at city hall. That’s where the big shots will be watching.”He made it sound tempting. A rooftop view. The perfect place to see the floats roll by. But I shook my head.“No. Just curious.”I had no desire to squeeze myself in among Alphas and officials. That rooftop was for people who mattered. I wasn&rsq

Mabel’s POV"I'm ready. Do I look weird in this?" I stepped out of the dressing room, tugging at the hem of my shorts. Ronan hadn’t moved an inch since I left. His eyes were on me, and it made my skin prickle."Is something wrong?" I asked.Ronan blinked, like I’d just pulled him out of a daze. He swallowed hard. "Uh… no. You’re fine."Fine? His voice cracked. He looked like he was trying not to choke on his own tongue."You sure?" I tilted my head."Yeah. Totally. Just—wait for me on the mat. I’ll grab some water." He spun away fast, muttering something about cooling off. When he came back, he moved stiffly, shoulders locked. He didn’t look at me much. My stomach twisted with guilt. He could’ve been at the festival, surrounded by people who adored him. Instead, he was stuck here with me."We can skip this," I offered. "You probably have other things to do.
