CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

CAROLINE

Sunlight streams in through the window, and I groan, waking up slowly.

Birds chirp softly, and I blink awake, confused. Salvatore’s big, ugly house doesn’t have birds, and neither does my apartment in London.

I sit up slowly and look around. I’m in a bedroom, except the walls are made of wood. Cool breeze seeps in, and goosebumps break over my skin. The sheets are so soft, and the air smells divine.

Where am I?

Slowly, I remember last night. I remember my argument with

CHAPTER 39SALVATORE I lean back slowly in my chair, staring at Dominic across the council table while rage crawls steadily under my skin.Word has spread. Wolves survive on instinct, hierarchy, gossip and blood. The entire medical wing watched Caroline collapse into my arms and calm the second I touched her. They watched me react. They watched her react. Now they are talking. I should have known better.“She’s human,” Viktor says, finally, his voice hard with disapproval. “This should never have been allowed to progress this far.”Allowed. The word alone makes my wolf snap viciously.“And yet,” I reply calmly, “here we are.”The room stills slightly, because they know me well enough to hear the danger beneath the calm.Dominic exhales slowly. “The issue isn’t the woman herself.”Viktor scoffs. “It absolutely is.”“No,” Dominic counters. “The issue is perception. The pack

CHAPTER 38 CAROLINE I cannot sleep. The city glows outside the apartment windows, alive even this late at night. Horns blare faintly somewhere below. Sirens echo in the distance. New York never really shuts up, and neither does my mind. I turn in bed for what feels like the hundredth time and groan softly into the pillow. This is ridiculous. My body is exhausted. I worked almost twelve hours in the medical wing. My feet hurt. My back hurts. The baby has apparently decided sleep is optional now. And Salvatore … God. Everything feels worse after today. That moment in the medical wing keeps replaying in my head over and over again. His hand on my waist. I shove the blanket off me with frustration. Sleep is clearly not happening. The apartment is quiet when I step out into the hallway, wearing one of the ove

CHAPTER 37SALVATORE“Again.”The soldier rushes me instantly, but he is too slow.I sidestep easily, grab his arm and slam him hard into the mat before he can recover. The impact echoes through the training room.“Dead.” I grin.He groans. “You enjoy this too much.”“I enjoy competence. Get up.”Around us, wolves continue training in organised chaos. Fists collide, and bodies hit the floor. Commands echo through the massive underground facility. Usually, this helps. Violence clears my head. Today, nothing is working because Caroline is downstairs, in my territory, breathing my air. I hate how much effect she has on me. I hate the awareness constantly clawing under my skin. The need to know where she is, what she is doing, and whether she has eaten. It is unbearable.Slade watches from the edge of the room with crossed arms. “You’ve broken three people already.”“They’re weak.” I scoff with a shrug.“No. You’re distracted.” He states, and I ignore him completely.Another wolf approac

CHAPTER 36CAROLINEThe medical wing is nothing like I expected. I expected darkness and stone walls. Something dramatic and horrifying, considering werewolves apparently exist. Instead, it looks almost painfully normal with white walls, bright lights and the sharp scent of antiseptic. For one terrifying second, it feels like home. My chest tightens painfully at the realisation. I’ve missed London so much.Sage walks beside me quietly while the guards trail behind us. “You’re nervous.” She says casually.“I’m trying not to throw up.” I glance at her. “Do they all hate me?”She snorts softly. “No. They mostly distrust humans. Especially humans under Alpha protection.”The elevator doors open onto another floor, and immediately, conversations quieten slightly. Eyes follow me everywhere, and my stomach twists.Sage leans closer slightly. “Don’t let them smell fear.”“I’m human. I literally smell like fear.”“Good point.”Despite myself, I laugh softly.A tall woman with dark skin and sil

CHAPTER 35CAROLINEI survive the council room. The second Salvatore introduces me, every eye in the room lands on me again, and I understand very quickly that wolves stare differently from humans. There’s weight behind it. I feel stripped bare under it, but he stays beside me the entire time.Slade steps in smoothly before the silence becomes unbearable. “Since our Alpha enjoys terrifying people instead of behaving normally, I’ll do the introductions.”A few people laugh nervously. Salvatore does not.I try not to stare at him, but it’s difficult not to when his presence feels wrapped around my spine. Ever since I stormed into the meeting, something between us feels different, sharper, and more exposed. I feel him now, and it keeps brushing against me in strange waves.Slade gestures toward a man seated near the centre. “That’s Dominic. Beta of the southern territories.”Dominic gives me a small smile. “Nice to officially meet you, Doctor.”His voice is warm enough that some of the

CHAPTER 34SALVATORECaroline has been glaring at me for the last twenty minutes.I pretend not to notice, mostly because if I acknowledge it, we’ll start arguing again, and I’m already exhausted. She stands near the massive windows of my office apartment, arms folded tightly over her chest, looking out over Manhattan like she wants to burn the entire city down. The morning light spills across her skin softly, catching in her hair, but there is nothing soft about her expression. She’s angry.“You’re ignoring me on purpose.” She says, finally.I continue signing the paperwork in front of me. “I heard everything you said.”“Then answer me.”“No.”Her laugh is sharp and disbelieving. “You cannot seriously think I’m staying locked in this apartment all day.”“Yes.”She turns fully toward me. “I will lose my mind in here.”My hand stills briefly against the paper. Something ugly twists in my chest before I force it down. “That is dramatic.”“No, it’s honest.” She fires back instantly. “You
