Chapter 36

“Yes!” He returned with force. “You’re the one that said you were leaving!” He reinforced.

“I never said I was leaving Logan! I said I needed to move on, I need to finish my work placement, pass my exams and move on from there. Moving on doesn’t necessarily mean leaving, it means moving on from what has happened to me and moving onto hopefully something new and better for me! You’re the one that said I am nothing to you!”

Two can play at that game! I thought.

I felt my gut twisting and the emotional pain rising within me. My chest had tightened and my eyes pricked with tears that I was trying to hold back. I refused to cry over him. He dropped my arm and stepped back. His eyes flashed from side to side as he tested his memory for his recollection of what he walked into on that day.

“I only said that because I thought you were leaving. I thought you didn’t want me, and it hurt...” His voice trailed off as the realisation hit home.

“So, you wanted to hurt me in return. Well congratulations Logan you’ve broken my heart!” I shouted.

I realised what I had just said in those words. In that one little sentence I had confessed my love for him and how he had broken it without me even telling him that I had fallen for him. How, and when I fell for him, I have no idea, but now it was too late. I stormed out of the apartment and made my way to Carter and Sons to meet Evelyn for final preparations. My phone was blowing up as I arrived at their building.

‘Leah, what have I done?’

‘Leah, we need to talk.’

‘I’m so sorry!’

‘Please let me explain.’

‘I need to explain last night, I need to explain everything.’

‘Fuck, please answer me, Leah.’

‘I am so sorry.’

I could tell from his messages that he knew he had lost me. His actions solidified his words of me meaning nothing to him. Whether he meant it, or was just trying to hurt me, was still unclear though.

I turned my phone off as his name flashed up onto my screen for the 10th time. Evelyn found me standing staring at a black screen and asked what had happened. I explained everything. She offered to pay for a hotel room for the night for me to gather my thoughts and get some space. She also messaged Jack and told him so he could keep Logan under control in the courthouse. Evelyn escorted me into a waiting room when we reached the courthouse. I was not on the list to be called but there was no telling if the docket would change based on evidence presented.

The day was long and being alone in a room with my own thoughts was difficult. I turned my phone back on and found more messages and even missed calls from Logan. It was early afternoon when the door opened and in walked Evelyn.

“Change of plans, the defense team have called you up now.”

“Why are they calling me?” My body tensed as it filled with nerves and adrenalin.

“Leah, this is a good thing, we can get you up there and everything we have prepared for will be done with by the end of today. Then all we need is Logan.”

I followed her to the courtroom. I was asked to wait outside, and someone would bring me in once they were ready. I was starting to shake under the nerves building inside me. I wondered whether I could do this or not. With all the preparation in the world, was it truly enough for me to take the stand and face them?
