View MoreIt was 10pm, I had completely lost track of time. I was too busy focusing on my assignment for my undergraduate business course. Time had flown by so quickly while I was busy typing away. The only reason time became a factor was due to the noise outside. There was a banging noise like someone was trying to find a way inside. I looked out of the front window and could not see anything. As I was heading towards the kitchen to look outside of the window, there was a banging on the back door.
My stomach churned and I was paralyzed with fear. I was fixed in place, completely frozen, until another bang happened this time, louder. I jumped and spun around and saw a shadow flash across my front window. There was another loud bang, this time from the front door, then another and I heard the back door slam open against the worktop. My adrenaline kicked in, and my feet were moving. My mind was swirling; I was so scared I didn’t know what to do. I found myself heading towards the downstairs bathroom, once inside my finger fumbled trying to latch the lock. I heard footsteps run past the door in the hall and up the stairs. My breathing felt so loud; I was convinced that they would hear me. My hands covered my mouth trying to stay quiet, as I heard the footsteps come back down. Thud, thud, thud. Two male voices were heard from the living room. More footsteps came past the door, and I saw a shadow stop and come back to the door, underneath. The door handle rattled; I had been found! “She’s in here!” A voice shouted. “Open the door!” He shouted. His voice was dark and deep. The door shuddered with thumping. I reached for the window behind the toilet and undid the latch. I climbed out as quickly as I could and found myself running down my driveway as I heard the bang of the bathroom door finally being kicked in. I heard shouts between them as my heart pumped. My legs carried me, running down the street. I came upon a crossroads and looked around. I saw someone to the right and ran towards them. I heard shouts from the direction of my house. I saw a tall, dark, handsome man in a suit walking towards a car. My gut pulled me towards him. Could he help me? The voices are at the crossroads now. Getting closer and closer. I stopped breathlessly in front of him. He looked startled. “Are you single?” I asked quickly. “Excuse me?” “Are you single?” I asked quickly, “Please, I need help.” He looked confused but I heard the voices shout, “Check right, I'll go left!” I grabbed the lapels on his jacket and pulled him against me onto the wall. His left hand settled next to my face on the wall propping him up, as my left hand cupped his face and pulled him into a kiss. I heard someone run by on the phone. “Fuck, I can't find her.” He pulled away and my eyes shot around the street. The street was empty and there was no one around. I looked back at him and found a confused look on his face. My knuckles were white as I was holding onto him so tightly. Slowly, uncurling my fingers, I released him. The tension in my fingers causes me pain. He stepped back and straightened his jacket. Adrenaline was still pumping through my veins, pushing fear into every nerve ending in my body. My heart was pumping so loudly it took a few attempts before I heard anything apart from that. My breathing still heavy and my eyes still shooting around the street looking for shadows. The cleaner and alarm installation team were finished at the same time. I was shown how to use the alarm. There were a lot of different settings but the main one they showed me; meant it would activate for near enough anything. Between that and the panic button I was supplied by the police, I started to feel safe at home again. It was almost lunch time when Logan yawned for the first time. Reluctantly, he decided to leave. As he left, he handed me his business card and wrote his personal number on the back. “I want you to call me if you need anything.” He said with a soft smile as he handed me his card. “I really cannot thank you enough Logan.” “Stay safe.” He bid me goodbye. I locked all the doors and windows, set up the new alarm system and headed to bed to try and sleep for a while. I decided to take a shower to try and let the hot water wash away some of the tension still evidently holding onto me. I dragged myself out of the shower and wrapped myself in some comfortable paj
I ran upstairs, ignoring Logan’s words, looking for my phone which was still on my bedside table, on charge. It looked like there was minimal change upstairs. I searched through my phone quickly and sank with relief onto the edge of my bed. “Everything ok?” I looked up to see Logan leaning against my doorway.“I backed up my assignment on my OneDrive. I can access it on my phone which means I can still finish it and submit it on time.”“I’m sure you can get an extension on the assignment.”“I don’t want nor do I need an extension. I need to get it done and submitted. I need to do something normal and not let last night change anything.”I headed back downstairs pushing past Logan and started to tidy up. Logan’s hand stopped on top of mine. I froze looking at him.“You don’t have to do that now.”“I do; I can't leave it like this. I need to tidy and call someone out to fix the doors. I need to...” Panic set in with realisation over everything that needed doing. Logan cut me off. “
Moments later, our conversation was interrupted by the door opening as Amelia walked in. “We have everything we need; you can go home now Leah.” “Thank you.” I went to step towards the door but stopped wondering how I was going to get home. “Before you go, the officer at the front desk is going to give you a panic button. If something happens again, hit the button and it will send a message to the nearest officer to attend your address.” I nodded, smiling, before following her to the front desk. “I will be in touch if I have any more questions.” I shook her hand, followed by Logan, and she disappeared back through the swipe access door. I listened to the front desk officer on the instructions for the panic button. He showed me how it worked with a test and then set the alarm and handed it over. I inspected the small device closely in my hand. This little thing was potentially my lifeline. I yawned looking up at the clock on the wall in reception to see the time was 6:33am.
“Not your choice, but throughout the events your mind made choices on what to do, where to hide, where to run, what to do when in the street. You made a choice in some respect, but what happened was not your choice, but I do need to know why did you kiss Logan? Why not ask for help, or explain the situation?”“I was scared, and I didn’t know if there was enough time to explain the situation before they caught up to me and found me, so I chose an option that I thought would conceal me enough from being discovered by them as they ran by.”“Why didn’t you just pull him against you, why kiss him?”“I don’t know! It was subconsciously my reaction to the situation.” I pushed up to my feet and began to pace. There was a knock at the door. Amelia opened it and there were hushed voices for a few moments before she returned.“It seems the officers have found two points of forced entry at your house. There is a forensics team there now.”“When can I go home?” I snapped. “Not until they have co
