...

I sensed trouble too late. By the time I wanted to bolt, the trap had already sprung.

"Chester, we're talking seven million five hundred thousand bucks here. I can't pay that off in ten lifetimes!

"But you, man? You're the lucky one. That crescent-shaped birthmark on your belly is like a golden ticket, meant to bail me out of this mess!"

A chill ran down my spine. Fear gripped my throat so tight I forgot how to breathe.

"Josh, you're selling me out?

"After all these years, with you being my best friend, you'd trade me for a stack of cash?"

He backed away, shaking his head as he stammered, "D-don't give me that look... Ms. Emerson, the casino queen, is loaded–and she has a big thing for guys with your kind of birthmark. She'd wipe out any debt for a chance with one.

"She's got her quirks, and you've got the mark. I figured–hey, maybe she'll dig you. You could end up living the high life as Mr. Emerson!"

The thought of being some rich lady's trophy sent a shudder through me.

I shoved him aside, determined to get out. "Dream on about being Mr. Emerson yourself. I'm out of here!"

Before my hand even grazed the doorknob, a heavy blow to the back of my head sent the world spinning.

"Chester, you brought this on yourself!"

I stumbled and hit the floor hard.

He loomed over me, snatching the lucky coin from my pocket.

"Don't play dumb. You didn't tag along for the sights. You're here to find your real parents.

"You've already come this far. Help me settle my debt, and I'll track down your parents. But make a run for it, and you can kiss your family reunion goodbye."

Pain throbbed at the base of my skull as I fought to move, my lips trembling, a sense of hopelessness washing over me.

I was snatched at five.

To keep his secret safe, the trafficker ditched my clothes, put a long wig on me, and tossed everything I had.

Only the lucky coin, etched with the nickname of my younger years, stayed hidden beneath my tongue.

16 years passed, and the path home grew blurry; memories before five faded. That coin was the last piece of my parents I had.

No lucky coin, no hope.

"You got the picture."

Josh's words hung in the air as the door to the room swung open.

A group of tough-looking guys stepped in. "You're Josh, right? Heard you've got something to cover your debts?"

Josh pointed at me, nodding eagerly.

"Mr. Baker, Ms. Emerson is after a guy with a crescent-shaped birthmark, right? Meet my friend Chester; he's got one on his stomach!

"See, I've delivered. Now, about my seven million five hundred thousand..."

The head honcho did not even glance up as he took a seat. "Hold your horses, let's see the merchandise first."

His goons lunged at me, shoving me onto the couch and stripping off my jacket in a flash.

One reached for my T-shirt, but I kicked him hard in the shin.

"Back off, don't touch me!"

"Son of a... You kicked me?" He spat out and smacked me across the face, twice. My vision exploded into stars, and before I could get a word out, a chilling gunshot echoed. The man's shin exploded in pain, and he crumpled to the floor, howling.

Alex Baker stood there, gun in hand, his face a mask of stone.

"Are you out of your mind, messing around before we're done checking?"

"Don't beat yourself up. It wasn't your fault."After you were taken, we looked for you everywhere. However, Dad got sick out of the blue and was gone within two months."He made me promise, when he was sick, to find you and apologize. He regretted not going with you that day, that maybe you wouldn't have been taken then."Even at the end, he worried about you, scared you were suffering with the buyers, scared of what the traffickers might do to you."Now that I've brought you here, he can finally be at peace."Tears blurred my vision, but I wiped them away and knelt by the grave, crying softly.I poured out my heart to Dad, telling him everything, down to every detail.I talked about how the people who bought me treated me badly, just wanting me to give them their own child. When they finally had a boy, I went from being the adopted son to the black sheep, just a nanny in their home. However, I never forgot that I was purchased. Once I was old enough, I swiped an ID card and

"Okay, let's get our stuff. I'll take you to see where we live now."…We drove through hidden mountain paths until we stopped at a plain-looking gate. Beyond it was a sprawling, swanky villa."Opening that casino put a target on my back. I've kept things on the down-low to dodge any heat. That's why I didn't go around broadcasting that I was hunting for my boy."Say I'm after a guy with a birthmark, and folks think I'm scouting for a young flame. If it's about finding my son, though, my enemies would use you against me."Fiona ushered me in, her voice laced with a twinge of regret."That's why you've been through the wringer."I'm still in shock. If I hadn't caught you talking, hadn't caught the name 'Cole,' I might've lost you to Alex..."She shuddered at the thought, her eyes hardening as she glanced at the staircase. The basement below echoed with chilling groans."Is that... Alex?" I asked."Yeah. I had him and Josh duke it out down there. Josh got the worst of it; he's

He seemed to have forgotten the things he had done to me as he tried to get closer, until one sharp look from Mom and he was sent flying back by one of her guys.I calmly watched as he let out a low moan, his stomach wound tearing open and turning his shirt crimson."We did talk about being each other's best man, Josh, but that was back when we were best friends, the closest of brothers."You tricked me, your so-called best friend, into coming to Macoria with the plan to sell me off and settle your debts!"Back then, I pleaded with you to spare me, even promised to pay off your million-dollar debt, but what did you do? You feared I'd turn on you just like you did to me, so you scarred me for life and drugged me, hoping I'd die!"Now where on earth did you get the nerve to beg for my help?" I spat out the words with venom.Josh was a picture of terror, standing there, constantly being shoved back by others, never able to get close to me.He could only watch, tears streaming down

"Okay… But Ms. Emerson, what about Alex?""Throw him in with the other guy. Anyone who lays a finger on my boy will pay. I won't let any of them off the hook."The voices faded into the distance until they were gone, and the world went silent. I turned, walking and thinking that if I just retraced my steps, I would find my way home.Mom was there, waiting with a mountain of chocolates for me, peeling them one by one, placing them in my mouth...I paused. That was not right. I could not have chocolate. It was chocolate that cost me my home.…My eyes snapped open, and all the chocolates had vanished.I lay there, gazing up at the plain white ceiling, when I felt a gentle squeeze on my hand."Cole, I'm right here," Fiona whispered softly.I turned to see the face that lived in my memories. She looked older, her hair a snowy white, appearing not in her forties but closer to sixty. Nonetheless, she was unmistakably my mom, unchanged at heart."Mom, I'm still here. I didn't die.

..."What's that kid saying?" someone muttered."Did he say his name's Cole?" questioned another. The crowd buzzed with curiosity, but their whispers soon faded to nothing. The once steady steps then rushed toward me, but by the time they reached me, my eyes would not open.I could not see my mom, and I had no clue if she would even recognize me.However, I had to try. That was my last shot."I'm Cole Scott..." I whispered."Everybody zip it!" Mom's voice cut through the silence like a knife. She was trying to make out my words, but someone came running down the stairs."Ms. Emerson, sorry to disturb you again… This guy's a phony, just like the rest. But he craftily got himself a crescent-shaped birthmark right where you'd think to look."Don't worry, though. I've given him what he deserves. If you're still mad, I can carve that mark off and stitch it onto his face."The crowd gasped at the cruelty of it all, yet there were some who could not help but sigh."It's like flipp

Josh chucked the empty bottle and the knife under the table, his voice a manic whisper in my ear, "Sorry, but if it's between you and me, I'm the one who's gotta make it out alive!"…The anesthetic coursed through me, sapping all my strength. I slumped to the floor, feeling like I might black out any second. That was when Alex walked in.He saw me on the ground, his brow creasing with concern, and turned to Josh. "What's going on here?"Josh, tears streaming down his face, pointed at me and blurted, "Mr. Baker, he couldn't handle the pain of getting the tattoo. He bolted before we could finish the coloring."Now the wound's split open... He's in so much pain that he's dizzy..."Alex's eyes dropped to the tip of my crescent tattoo, spotting the thin line of blood. "It really is fake..."Tell Ms. Emerson not to bother coming down here. We've got another faker."A shadow loomed over me, and a chilling sensation pressed against my belly."You nearly had me fooled, almost got me
