Chapter 4

Author: Moon Down
Sebastian had medicine delivered to me twice, yet he never showed up in person.

Father stopped the messengers at the courtyard gate.

All they brought back to Page Manor was one message.

"Ms. Isolde has come to her senses."

…

On the morning of the seventh day, the entire Jameston Manor was decorated for the wedding.

Father stood outside my door and announced, "You'll leave through the back gate for your wedding first. Then Juliet will depart from the front gate and marry Lord Page. Once both marriages are settled, there will be no more trouble with Merlin's appointment to the War Office."

He had already sent word to Josiah that I had changed my mind. Father also ordered my bedroom door locked and forbade Hilda from going out to send a message.

I changed out of the wedding dress they had sent me and opened the window with Hilda. She had barely climbed over the courtyard's wall when a scream rang outside.

Merlin stormed in with several men, forcing the door open.

I grabbed a candlestick and hurled it at one of the wedding chaperones, then turned and gripped the doorframe.

"I never agreed to this marriage! Sending me to Josiah without telling him the truth isn't matchmaking. It's tricking him into marriage!"

"Once you're in the Hewitt household, Lord Page will know of our family's loyalty to him. Tie her up. Don't let her miss the ceremony."

Merlin pried my fingers off the doorframe.

Two chaperones tied my arms behind my back. Then they looped a wide silk sash under my arms and pulled it tight behind me.

My chest felt constricted.

I gasped, but I couldn't draw a full breath. "Loosen it! I can't breathe…"

Merlin touched my cold hand and only frowned. "You had enough strength to hit someone just now. How could you suddenly be unable to breathe?"

Mother saw how pale I had gotten and reached to loosen the sash. "Is it too tight?"

Juliet hurried over from the main courtyard and glanced at the time. "Isolde's wedding ceremony is about to begin. She knows you'll give in if she acts helpless, Mother."

Mother's hand froze in midair. In the end, she pulled it back.

I was still crying for help as they dragged me out of the courtyard.

…

Guests had already gathered outside the main gate.

Juliet glanced at the chaperone escorting me to my wedding. "Isolde is upset right now. Don't let her say anything that would disgrace us or the Page family."

The chaperone crumpled a handkerchief into a ball and stuffed it into my mouth.

I shook my head desperately, but only muffled sounds came from my throat.

The silk sash tightened around my chest as I struggled.

Valeria stared at me, her face pale. "Isolde doesn't look well. Shouldn't we loosen the sash a little?"

Juliet pressed down on the sash. "If we loosen it, she'll escape. Someone at Hewitt Manor can untie it once she gets there."

As they forced me into the bridal carriage, Sebastian received a message from the Jameston family.

"Ms. Isolde has come around and will marry into the Hewitt family first today. Rest assured, my lord."

"She agreed to this herself?" Sebastian asked.

The messenger gave a vague reply. "Mr. and Mrs. Jameston Sr. talked her into it."

Sebastian's personal attendant, Conrad Nightingale, whispered, "My lord, Ms. Isolde was determined to refuse the match a few days ago. Should we send someone to Jameston Manor to confirm her wishes?"

Juliet's bridal carriage was waiting outside Page Manor, and the wedding official was pressing them to start the ceremony on time.

Sebastian was silent for a moment. "Send someone to Hewitt Manor to check. Come back and report to me after the ceremony is over."

…

Once the bridal carriage began to move, I slammed my shoulder against its wall repeatedly.

"Save your strength, miss." The wedding chaperone escorting me snapped from outside. "If you keep struggling, the sash will only tighten."

I didn't stop. The walls of the carriage shook several more times, and each impact grew weaker.

In the end, I no longer had the strength to even lift my shoulder.

"Why couldn't you have stayed quiet from the start?" the chaperone asked.

A carpet had been laid outside Hewitt Manor.

The bridal carriage came to a stop.

A bridal attendant smiled and knocked on the carriage's door.

"The wedding ceremony is about to begin. Ms. Jameston, please step out of the carriage."

There was no response from inside.

Josiah noticed the edge of my gown through a gap in the window curtain. It remained still. He hurried over.

"Ms. Jameston?"

Still, there was no answer.

Josiah yanked the door open.

I was slumped against the wall of the carriage, my bridal veil had slipped off. My hands were still tied behind my back, and the crumpled handkerchief was stuffed into my mouth. The sash had left a deep crease across the front of my wedding dress.

Josiah drew his dagger and cut through the sash, then pulled the wad of cloth from my mouth. "Isolde?"

He carried me out of the bridal carriage.

My body was still warm, but my head hung limp in the crook of his arm.

Josiah held his hand beneath my nose, then suddenly froze. He clutched me tighter and shouted, "Call for a doctor! Hurry! Get a doctor!"

On the seventh day after my death, the elders of the Page family gathered at the family chapel. They refused to let me be buried in the family plot."Isolde signed the divorce agreement and was sent to the Hewitt family. Even though the marriage never took place, she can no longer be buried in our family plot as part of our family."Sebastian pulled out the copy of the divorce agreement kept at his manor and threw it into the brazier in front of all the elders."I was the one who asked to end the marriage, and I forced her to marry someone else. Isolde never betrayed our family. We were the ones who failed her."The elders still refused to change their minds.Sebastian brought over the family register and set it on the altar."If anyone denies Isolde a place in our family plot, I will have my own name struck from the family register today. If she has no place in the Page family, then neither do I."Martha tried to reason with him through tear-filled eyes. "Sebastian, she's gone.

Sebastian took the secret letters to the High Court's prison.Juliet was still wearing her wedding dress. She had been locked up for three days, but she hadn't lost hope.As soon as Sebastian walked in, she jumped to her feet. "Sebastian, I know you're upset. But I never wanted Isolde dead. Once this is all cleared up, we can still have our wedding."Sebastian tossed the letters in front of her.Juliet took one look at them, and all the color drained from her face. "I didn't write them.""The handwriting, your personal seal, and the messenger's testimony have all been verified.""Prince Alistair forced me to do it!" Juliet seized the bars, panic rising in her eyes. "He wanted me back then. If I refused him, my whole family would suffer. What else could I do?"The palace attendant who had come with Sebastian unfolded another letter. "Prince Alistair, I am willing to marry you and serve you. Sebastian is nothing but a soldier. He is unlikely to survive his trip to the border. Ev

Three days after I died, Sebastian went to the palace. The new king, Frederick Lancaster, didn't make him kneel for long."Are you here to seek justice for Isolde Jameston, or to answer for what you've done?"Sebastian kept his head lowered."For both reasons. I failed her by allowing the Jameston family to force her to remarry. Your Majesty, I ask you to punish me as I deserve and investigate her whole family."Frederick ordered a sealed box brought in."Two weeks ago, border troops captured one of Alistair's men in the north. He once handled Alistair's private letters and hidden accounts."When Alistair was overthrown, he escaped the capital with his case. "He and the evidence have now been brought back under guard. The handwriting, seals, and accounts have undergone preliminary verification."Frederick fixed his gaze on Sebastian. "It was only yesterday that I learned the king's decision to arrange your marriage six years ago was no coincidence."Sebastian opened the box.

Sebastian had ice brought from the ice cellar. He used it to make a bed of ice in my suite. He refused to let them close my coffin.Hilda was found in the Jameston Manor's woodshed. Both her hands were raw and bloody from climbing over the wall. She rushed into my suite and collapsed beside me, sobbing so hard she almost passed out.Sebastian stood outside the door. “Why didn't she send someone to ask me for help?”Hilda whipped around. "Ms. Isolde begged you for help three times, my lord!"She continued, "The first time, she asked you to cancel the engagement. You told her to wait seven days. The second time, she came to you with injuries from kneeling all night, and you still told her to wait."When she asked for help the third time, she told you that her family would force her into the marriage."Hilda seized the packet of medicine from the table and hurled it at Sebastian."Lord Page, it's not that she didn't ask for help. Every time she begged you, you pushed her one step

Sebastian waited outside the whole time the coroner examined my body. He tried to go inside, but Josiah blocked his way."Isolde is already dead. Do you still have to let them violate her dignity?" Sebastian asked."If I don't have her examined, no one can prove she was murdered," Josiah replied.Josiah tossed the bloodstained sash at Sebastian's feet. "My lord, if you truly want justice for her, then wait."The coroner emerged half an hour later."The deceased has marks from being bound at both wrists and injuries from kneeling. Her fever had not yet broken."The cause of death was tight binding around her chest and abdomen, combined with an object stuffed into her mouth that blocked her breathing. She fought desperately for her life."Sebastian asked, "How did she injure her knees?"Another wedding chaperone suddenly burst into tears. "Mr. Jameston Sr. made her kneel in the family chapel. Ms. Isolde refused to marry, so she had to kneel all night. Today, her brother ordered u

The doctor Josiah had summoned crouched beside the carriage. He checked my breathing, then felt for a pulse at my neck.A moment later, he slowly drew back his hand."She's gone."Josiah's arms tightened around me.The wedding chaperone escorting me tried to slip away, but one of Josiah's guards seized her and forced her to the ground."Seal the gates," Josiah said. "No one is allowed to touch the carriage, the sash, or the handkerchief."The Jameston family's steward hurried forward."General Hewitt, Ms. Isolde caught a chill a few days ago. She must have suffered a sudden attack on the way."Josiah drew his dagger and lifted the silk sash wrapped around my chest."You call this an illness? Then why tie her hands behind her back? Why gag her?"The steward turned deathly pale and couldn't answer.Conrad, Sebastian's personal attendant, arrived just then to check on the wedding. He had come to confirm that the ceremony was complete. But the moment he saw my limp hand and the
