Chapter 4

Author: Cat-loving fish
Its claws tore my clothes. It also slammed my belly.

I lay on the floor miserably. I wailed in agony as my vision went dark.

I felt a warm rush flow out of me. My survival instincts kicked in, and I started screaming desperately, “Help! Walter, help!”

Before Walter came in, Belle slapped herself twice across the face, ripped her own bra straps off, and threw herself to the floor. Her hair was in a mess.

A moment later, Walter burst through the door like a madman and came straight to me. He barely looked at Belle.

“Zara, what’s wrong? I’m taking you to the hospital!”

Belle burst into dramatic sobs as if she had suffered the greatest injustice in the world.

“Boo hoo! Zara, why did you hit me? Scruffy is usually so gentle. It didn’t mean it. Why couldn’t you just leave him alone? Why do you have to poison him?”

My heart dropped.

I looked over quickly. The dog was lying on the floor, foaming at the mouth and whimpering.

I urgently said to Walter, “Walter, I didn’t do it. My water just broke. Please take me to the hospital!”

Walter hesitated for a moment. Just as he was about to crouch down and pick me up, Belle cried miserably with a tear-streaked face.

“Walter, Zara can’t even tell her own pee from amniotic fluid. She clearly wet her pants, but she’s lying and saying her water broke. Is she just making up an excuse to go to the hospital to avoid responsibility? Scruffy was a gift from my mom. What gives her the right to just poison him like that? Even if he’s just a dog, you don’t get to treat him that badly!

“Boo hoo! Since none of you can stand to have me around, fine. I’ll just leave!”

She stood up. Just as she was about to walk away, Walter pulled her into his arms.

“You’re not going anywhere without my permission.

“What will it take for you to stay? I’ll make it right for you.”

With that, Walter looked coldly at me and demanded, “Apologize to Scruffy.”

His tone was firm and left no room for argument.

A single tear rolled down my cheek. I never expected Walter to make me apologize to a dog that had hurt my child, all for Belle’s sake.

I glared at him and said defiantly, “Walter, that dog lunged at me and bit me. It broke my water. Our baby’s life is on the line. And you’re telling me to apologize to a dog? On what grounds?”

After Walter was thrown out, he thought about the signed divorce agreement. A moment later, he remembered something. He stormed back home furiously. The moment he stepped inside, Belle hugged him from behind.“Walter, you finally came back!”Walter did not hug her back. Instead, he shoved her hard to the floor.“Did you tamper with the divorce papers?”Belle’s expression changed dramatically. She shook her head.“It wasn’t me. You signed it yourself.”He grabbed Belle by the jaw and demanded viciously, “Impossible! Did you forge my signature?”Belle looked terrified. She desperately pried at Walter’s hand and struggled to breathe.“It wasn’t me... You didn’t even look at that document. You just signed it.”Walter’s hand suddenly went limp.He became regretful. He slumped to his knees in defeat.“Zara has made up her mind to divorce me. The baby’s gone. And now Zara’s gone, too.”He no longer had a home.He felt completely useless. He had betrayed Zara’s true feelings.

I never thought I would see Walter again. According to the bodyguards at the hospital entrance, he came several times but was stopped outside each time. The next time I got news of him, I could not have cared less.Perhaps it was because of the child. Having the child inside me had felt like a dream. But when the dream ended, so did everything else. While I was resting in bed, he appeared in front of me.I was about to shout when he lunged over and covered my mouth.“Zara, don’t be scared. Don’t make a sound. I need to talk to you.”I nodded. Only then did Walter let go of his hand.“Walter, how did you get in? Isn’t there anyone at the door?”Walter pointed to the window and said, “I climbed in through the window. Zara, is our child really gone?”I looked at him and said in a choked voice, “You let Belle kill our child with her own hands. I was already planning to divorce you, but the baby was innocent. If this accident hadn’t happened, I think I would’ve kept him.“But it w

Belle turned pale with fright. She shouted harshly, “This is a hospital! What are you trying to do?! Don’t come any closer!“Take one more step, and I’ll tell Walter! He’ll make you regret this! Stay back!”Alistair looked amused. He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Walter?“His company is about to go under. Right now, he’s probably tearing his hair out over it. Ms. Helm, as of today, you’re fired.”Belle was in disbelief. She let out an exaggerated, loud laugh. “Who do you think you are? Everyone in Velora City knows the Sterling family. Do you really think that you can easily bring down the Sterling Group?“Don’t be delusional!”Instead of getting angry, Alistair just smiled. “We’ll see who’s being delusional. Go ahead, check the news right now.”Belle dubiously took out her phone. She caught sight of the headlines.[Breaking News: Sterling Group Officially Acquired by Frost Group #SterlingGroupOnTheVergeOfCollapse]Belle’s hands trembled. She muttered to herself, “That’s imp

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed. I could smell the strong disinfectant.I stared blankly at the ceiling in a daze. Alistair saw me wake up. He said apologetically, “Zara, the doctor said you had a miscarriage.“I’m sorry. I arrived too late.”I forced myself to sit up and squeezed out a smile to comfort him. “It’s not your fault. I brought this on myself.“I should’ve ended things with Walter the day I found out he was cheating on me. No, actually, we never should have gotten together in the first place.”Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked at me with pained concern.“It’s because I wasn’t good enough. Back then, my father forced me to go train at a top-secret military unit. For three whole years, the only thing that kept me going was you. But when I finally made it out and came back, you were already with Walter.“I missed my chance with you, Zara. That’s why you’ve suffered so much. Don’t worry. I’ll make every single one of them pay for wha

Walter stared at Alistair Frost in shock. “How is he still alive?” Walter thought to himself. The Frost family was one of the three biggest families in Velora City. Alistair was the most feared among the Frosts. His methods were extremely ruthless.Back then, the heirs from different branches of the Frost family spilled each others’ blood for power. As the least favored illegitimate son, Alistair was sent by his father to train in a top-secret military unit.It was said that anyone sent there had a slim chance of survival. Even if they made it out alive, they would still come out half-dead.Alistair did make it out alive. However, he was ambushed by the other branches. He was left severely injured and barely clinging to life. The old head of the Frost family searched everywhere for the best doctors to save him. Walter said coldly, “That doesn’t justify you poisoning Belle’s dog. I’m the one who let her keep it in the office. If you have a problem, take it up with me. Don’t go after her.”Seeing that Walter and I had completely fallen out, Belle’s eyes gleamed with a flash of triumph. She cried even harder and said in a choked voice, “Walter, please don’t let me ruin your relationship with your wife. That would make me very sad.“I really don’t think Zara meant to poison Scruffy on purpose. Since it’s already gone, fighting over who’s to blame won’t bring it back. Let me tell you something. I heard Zara graduated from dance school, and she’s an amazing dancer. People call her the Dancing Queen. Why don’t Zara perform a beautiful, stunning dance for me? Then, we’ll call it even.”I clenched my fists tightly. My throat felt tight. It was very difficult to breathe.Walter booped Belle on the nose. He said affectionately, “Oh, what’s gotten into you today? You’re being so good.”Seeing the t
