Chapter 1

My husband, Walter Sterling, angrily explained himself to me, “Belle got here because she’s qualified. The company has policies. They can’t just fire people who haven’t done anything wrong.

“She and I are just coworkers. There’s nothing else.”

During his university days, Belle Helm was the girl he had an affair with.

For the sake of the baby growing inside me, I caved again and believed him.

Little did I know that this moment of weakness would later hurt me many times.

After Belle’s aggressive dog chomped down on my thigh, Walter and I had another argument.

Walter glared at me and said, “Scruffy was just playing with you. Why are you making such a big deal over a dog?”

Once again, he ignored my injury and the baby in my belly. He took Belle’s side without hesitation.

This happened countless times. For once, I had enough.

I looked at the man I had loved for nearly a decade and said calmly, “Walter, I want a divorce.”

He snickered and said, “Zara, don’t keep threatening me with divorce. You just want me to pamper you, don’t you? Why don’t you just say so?”

He pulled me into his arms with a playful smile and planted a loud kiss on my cheek.

“Fine! You’re my wife, aren’t you? If I don’t comfort you, who will?”

The bite mark on my thigh hurt so much that I broke out in cold sweat.

I instinctively tried to break free from his embrace, but he held me even tighter.

“Come on, stop being mad already. Didn’t we say we were going to the hospital for your prenatal checkup? I’ll take you there now.”

After we got into the car, Walter could tell I was still upset. He kept trying to chat with me the entire drive.

“Zara, can we actually see what the baby looks like with the 4D ultrasound? Do you think the baby will look more like you or more like me?”

Mentioning the baby subconsciously made my heart soften.

Even so, I did not respond. Instead, I turned to look out the window.

The weather was dark and gloomy. I could hear thunder roaring. Soon after, torrential rain poured down.

The window was not fully closed. The rain and cold mist blew in. I shivered.

Just then, Belle called.

“Mr. Sterling, the power has gone out at home. I’m so scared.

“Please save me!”

Her voice was whiny and coquettish. She hung up right after speaking.

Without hesitation, Walter slammed on the brakes.

His expression turned grim. He handed me his coat and gave me a cold glance.

“Belle has nyctophobia. I have to go to her right now.”

Stunned, I yelled at him in disbelief, “Walter, are you crazy?! It’s impossible to get a cab around here! What am I supposed to do if you leave me?!”

Walter glanced sideways at me. His tone was terrifyingly cold when he spoke.

“I can’t worry about that right now. You’ll only have cab troubles, while Belle’s life is on the line. You have to be more understanding.”

With that, he stepped on the gas, and the car sped off.

The rain soon soaked me through. My mind went completely blank.

I quickly took out my phone and called Walter.

I only got a cold, electronic voice in response.

“Sorry, the number you’re calling is currently busy.”

I was drenched in rain. The cold wind was so harsh that every inch of my skin stung.

I tried calling him multiple times, but every single one went unanswered.

I hugged my knees. The freezing rain mixed with my tears and streamed down.

I took my phone and called the man who had been waiting for me for five years.

“You once said you’d marry me if I got a divorce. Do you still mean it?”

After Walter was thrown out, he thought about the signed divorce agreement. A moment later, he remembered something. He stormed back home furiously. The moment he stepped inside, Belle hugged him from behind.“Walter, you finally came back!”Walter did not hug her back. Instead, he shoved her hard to the floor.“Did you tamper with the divorce papers?”Belle’s expression changed dramatically. She shook her head.“It wasn’t me. You signed it yourself.”He grabbed Belle by the jaw and demanded viciously, “Impossible! Did you forge my signature?”Belle looked terrified. She desperately pried at Walter’s hand and struggled to breathe.“It wasn’t me... You didn’t even look at that document. You just signed it.”Walter’s hand suddenly went limp.He became regretful. He slumped to his knees in defeat.“Zara has made up her mind to divorce me. The baby’s gone. And now Zara’s gone, too.”He no longer had a home.He felt completely useless. He had betrayed Zara’s true feelings.

I never thought I would see Walter again. According to the bodyguards at the hospital entrance, he came several times but was stopped outside each time. The next time I got news of him, I could not have cared less.Perhaps it was because of the child. Having the child inside me had felt like a dream. But when the dream ended, so did everything else. While I was resting in bed, he appeared in front of me.I was about to shout when he lunged over and covered my mouth.“Zara, don’t be scared. Don’t make a sound. I need to talk to you.”I nodded. Only then did Walter let go of his hand.“Walter, how did you get in? Isn’t there anyone at the door?”Walter pointed to the window and said, “I climbed in through the window. Zara, is our child really gone?”I looked at him and said in a choked voice, “You let Belle kill our child with her own hands. I was already planning to divorce you, but the baby was innocent. If this accident hadn’t happened, I think I would’ve kept him.“But it w

Belle turned pale with fright. She shouted harshly, “This is a hospital! What are you trying to do?! Don’t come any closer!“Take one more step, and I’ll tell Walter! He’ll make you regret this! Stay back!”Alistair looked amused. He raised an eyebrow and asked, “Walter?“His company is about to go under. Right now, he’s probably tearing his hair out over it. Ms. Helm, as of today, you’re fired.”Belle was in disbelief. She let out an exaggerated, loud laugh. “Who do you think you are? Everyone in Velora City knows the Sterling family. Do you really think that you can easily bring down the Sterling Group?“Don’t be delusional!”Instead of getting angry, Alistair just smiled. “We’ll see who’s being delusional. Go ahead, check the news right now.”Belle dubiously took out her phone. She caught sight of the headlines.[Breaking News: Sterling Group Officially Acquired by Frost Group #SterlingGroupOnTheVergeOfCollapse]Belle’s hands trembled. She muttered to herself, “That’s imp

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed. I could smell the strong disinfectant.I stared blankly at the ceiling in a daze. Alistair saw me wake up. He said apologetically, “Zara, the doctor said you had a miscarriage.“I’m sorry. I arrived too late.”I forced myself to sit up and squeezed out a smile to comfort him. “It’s not your fault. I brought this on myself.“I should’ve ended things with Walter the day I found out he was cheating on me. No, actually, we never should have gotten together in the first place.”Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked at me with pained concern.“It’s because I wasn’t good enough. Back then, my father forced me to go train at a top-secret military unit. For three whole years, the only thing that kept me going was you. But when I finally made it out and came back, you were already with Walter.“I missed my chance with you, Zara. That’s why you’ve suffered so much. Don’t worry. I’ll make every single one of them pay for wha

Walter said coldly, “That doesn’t justify you poisoning Belle’s dog. I’m the one who let her keep it in the office. If you have a problem, take it up with me. Don’t go after her.”Seeing that Walter and I had completely fallen out, Belle’s eyes gleamed with a flash of triumph. She cried even harder and said in a choked voice, “Walter, please don’t let me ruin your relationship with your wife. That would make me very sad.“I really don’t think Zara meant to poison Scruffy on purpose. Since it’s already gone, fighting over who’s to blame won’t bring it back. Let me tell you something. I heard Zara graduated from dance school, and she’s an amazing dancer. People call her the Dancing Queen. Why don’t Zara perform a beautiful, stunning dance for me? Then, we’ll call it even.”I clenched my fists tightly. My throat felt tight. It was very difficult to breathe.Walter booped Belle on the nose. He said affectionately, “Oh, what’s gotten into you today? You’re being so good.”Seeing the t
