Castle.

The second I got into my car, I slammed the door harder than I needed to. The sound cracked through the quiet street, and still it wasn’t enough to drown out the storm in my head.

Three fucking heart emojis.

I sat there, gripping the steering wheel tightly, staring blankly out at the road, as I replayed the image on the screen in my head. Lucas and the damn emojis.

Why the hell would Angel save his number like that? I mean, people don’t just use emojis for a stand-in date, do they?

I remembered Lucas too clearly for comfort. He had come to the Speakeasy with Angel on a double date with Daisy and her boyfriend, who was one of my lackeys. And this double date was something I orchestrated by the way.

I remembered thinking he was the perfect man for Angel with the way he was vulnerable around him, and so perfect.

I remembered thinking it was my fault because I was the one that ran away when Angel started asking too many questions.

And lastly, I remembered how easily I had dis

Castle. The walk back to my wing felt longer than usual. By the time I pushed open the double doors to my living room, the silence hit me like a hammer.I sank into the leather chair, elbows braced on my knees, staring at nothing. My brain wouldn’t stop replaying it—the name flashing on Angel’s phone, the ridiculous little hearts after it. Who the fuck does that? Who puts three love emojis after some random man’s name? Was it a joke? A secret code? A breadcrumb to something I wasn’t supposed to find?I could still see Angel’s face when I saw it. The panic. The way his mouth opened like he wanted to explain. And maybe—maybe I should have let him. Maybe if I’d given him two seconds to talk, I wouldn’t be here, spiraling like a fucking idiot, imagining scenarios that made me want to punch a hole through the wall.Instead, I stormed out. That was on me. But right now? I couldn’t handle listening to excuses. Because every possibility my brain threw at me about those emojis—every single o

Angel.I sat on the edge of my bed, lost in thoughts as the walls felt like they were closing in on me. Castle’s voice still lingered in the air, raw and cracked in a way I’d never heard before. And then the slam of the door, and the roar of his engine as he drove off felt like a full stop to whatever had been between us.The stupidest part was that I knew exactly what had set him off. That damn contact.God. I wanted to punch myself.Back when I first met him — Lucas from the bar — it had been nothing. Just another name, and another distraction. Then after the date at the Speakeasy and the one at the diner just opposite the bureau, I had gotten into one of those explosive fights with Castle. I had been furious with him, and I wanted to hurt him without him ever knowing it. So I renamed Lucas’s number with those stupid love emojis. Three of them. They didn't mean anything. I was just being petty at the moment. I never thought he would see it, and after we resolved our fight then,

Angel.Castle’s eyes met mine as he smiled at me. He knew exactly what I was doing. And I knew exactly what he would do in return. When I told him to do it, I expected resistance. I expected him to toy with me, as he always did. But this was different. This time, I wasn’t fighting for physical control—my body couldn't actually stand any exertion at the moment, so I was clawing back the mental high ground.I could feel the ache. I needed release badly and I know he suspected that. But if he caught even a whiff of how badly I needed him, he’d make me wait, and make me beg.So I stared him down, every inch of me daring him to keep me on the edge all night. And then, he chuckled and moved toward me like a predator closing in on prey. Then, without a word, his mouth was on mine—deep, consuming, stealing the breath from my lungs and replacing it with him. When he pulled away, my pulse was a wild, frantic thing. My voice came out low, but steady, “I want to taste you.”The look on his face

Castle.Angel’s fingers were still around my throat when he whispered, “Kiss me.”I could have pressed my mouth to his and given him what he wanted. But where’s the fun in being predictable? So instead, I gripped his wrist and gently eased his hand away. Then I pushed him back against the bed—slow, careful, and mindful of the injuries I’d catalogued the second I walked in.Then I crawled toward him, slowly and seductively, making sure to watch every reaction on his face. My knees sank into the mattress as I advanced, with the springs sighing under my weight. I kept my briefs on, because this wasn’t about rushing. This was about watching him come undone one breath at a time. His eyes tracked me the whole way, heavy-lidded, and his chest rose faster with each labored breath. When I got close enough for my breath to mingle with his, I stopped. We looked into each other’s eyes as we breathed in tandem. We didn’t touch, nor did we kiss. Just let the air between us burn. Then I tilted my h

Angel. When I was in that hospital bed with drugs pumping through my system, I had made a promise to myself. It was a difficult and painful promise but it was necessary.I told myself I was done making Castle my priority. I said I was done letting the mere thought of him dictate my every move and every thought.I swore that the next time I saw him, it wouldn’t be like before—I would put him in handcuffs. Or put a bullet between his fucking eyes.I was determined that there would be no more second chances, no more weakness, no more letting the man I loved play me like I was some pawn he could move around his blood-soaked chessboard. But here I was… faced with the choice, and once again I folded. Once again, I let him twist me into whatever shape suited him.The difference was that this time around I knew everything, and I was still a willing pawn. The tears came before I could stop them, hot and unwanted, streaking down my face until my vision blurred. Why?Why do I keep going back?W
