Chapter 56: Coming Out Plain

The words stayed in the room long after the survivor spoke.

‘The woman you call Natasha Reese isn't supposed to exist.’

Nobody moved for several seconds. The medical room felt too quiet, as if the whole building had paused to listen, and Natasha stood in the middle of it with the weight of too many eyes on her. Aaron was beside her, close enough for her to feel the steady warmth of him, while Josh stood a few steps away with his hands curled at his sides.

The survivor looked exhausted aft

Aaron studied her face. He knew that expression. Natasha was already thinking like a doctor. Like a woman who refused to accept that anyone was beyond saving. Elias returned to the files. “The programme changed again after Aerion reached Eden.” A new heading appeared. CERBERUS PHASE THREE. The date was several weeks after the outbreak. These subjects were different. They were larger. More advanced. More intelligent. The photographs matched the Night Hunters Natasha and the others had faced. The report listed their new abilities. Strategic hunting, climbing, group communication, recognition of biological signals, resistance to ordinary infected control. Elias stopped reading. “Recognition of biological signals.” Natasha moved closer. “Open that section.” Elias did. The report explained that Phase Three subjects reacted strongly to Aerion’s original signal. They could sense it across long distances. They also recognised modified versions of the same biological pattern. Below

Nobody spoke for several seconds. Natasha stared at the map on the screen. The marked location was deep beneath the mountains in northern Canada. EDEN PRIMARY FACILITY. Below it was the transfer order. AERION TRANSFER AUTHORISED. Professor Hargrove’s final words still hung in the room. Aerion went to them. Aaron moved closer to the screen. “What does that mean?” he asked. Professor Hargrove adjusted his glasses, but his hand was not steady. “It means Eden did not recover Aerion after the outbreak.” He pointed toward the date. “The organism left the original research facility after the containment failure. According to this record, it reached Eden’s primary base two days later.” Victor frowned. “On its own?” “That appears to be what happened.” Claire looked at the map. “How could it know where to go?” Professor Hargrove did not answer. Elias began searching through the attached records. “There may be more.” Natasha remained still. Her mother had said Aerion’s cells com

The file marking Natasha as deceased appeared beside her. “I hated writing those words,” Helena whispered. “But the dead cannot be recovered.” Natasha’s eyes filled with tears. Her mother had declared her dead to keep her alive. “We believed it worked,” Helena continued. “For years, Eden stopped searching.” She looked toward the door again. This time, her fear was stronger. “But something has changed.” The date beneath the video remained visible. Three days before the outbreak. “They know we continued the serum research,” Helena said. “They know your father and I refused to give them the final formula.” Elias leaned toward the screen. “The final formula,” he repeated quietly. Helena held up a small glass container. Inside it was a clear liquid. “The serum was never meant to turn people into weapons. It was meant to protect the human body from Aerion’s infection.” Natasha remembered injecting herself with it. Which was the reason she is different from everyone. The reason

Elias pressed the play button, and for a few seconds, the screen remained dark. Then the image slowly appeared. Natasha stopped breathing. Her mother sat inside a small office wearing a white laboratory coat. Her hair was tied behind her head, but several loose strands had fallen around her tired face. There were dark circles beneath her eyes, and fear showed clearly in the way she kept glancing toward the door. Natasha had seen photographs of her mother since arriving at New Haven. She had watched older recordings and listened to parts of her research, but this was different. This message was made for her. Her mother looked directly into the camera. “If you are watching this, Natasha, then I failed to keep you away from all of this.” Her voice trembled slightly. Natasha’s chest tightened. Aaron’s hand remained gently against her back. Helena lowered her eyes for a moment before continuing. “There are many things your father and I should have told you. We believed silence would

Hargrove stepped toward the screen and studied the security signature attached to the termination order. His face slowly lost its colour. “What is it?” Natasha asked. He removed his glasses. “The order carries your mother’s private research signature.” Natasha stared at him. “My mother declared me dead?” “No.” Professor Hargrove looked at her carefully. “I think your mother made them believe you were dead.” The words settled heavily inside the room. Natasha looked back at the screen. Her parents had erased her from the system, they had hidden her long before Aerion escaped, and long before the infected destroyed the world. “Why would they do that?” Marcus asked. Professor Hargrove looked at the compatibility status. “Because someone discovered Natasha’s genetic profile.” Elias opened the next page, the document contained medical information Natasha had never seen before. Blood type. Immune responses. Cellular resistance. Genetic markers. Most of the report was filled wit

As the final lock clicked. Everyone in the laboratory became silent. Natasha stood beside Aaron as Elias slowly lifted the cover of the Level Omega archive case. The heavy lid opened with a low mechanical sound. Inside were several protected storage drives, sealed files, old photographs, and documents marked with red warning labels. LEVEL OMEGA CLEARANCE. UNAUTHORISED ACCESS PROHIBITED. BIOLOGICAL SECURITY RECORDS. Natasha stared at the contents. Elias had told her that he found something connected to her name. Now the answer was directly in front of her. Aaron stood close enough for his shoulder to touch hers. He knew she did not need questions at that moment. She only needed to know that he was there. Professor Hargrove stepped closer to the table. His expression changed as he examined the markings on the files. “I recognise this classification,” he said quietly. Elias looked at him. “You haven't seen Level Omega records before?” “No.” Professor Hargrove carefully adjust

Josh didn’t have an answer to Natasha’s questions—because there wasn’t one. But Natasha took his silence as an answer anyway. Once again, nothing was settled. It felt like her marriage was falling apart, and she couldn’t do anything to stop it. Night came quickly, and they both went to bed. Josh s

The late morning sun streamed through the curtains and fell across Natasha’s face. She stirred, then jolted awake. For a moment, she did not move. Her eyes scanned the room slowly, trying to make sense of where she was. The bed, the walls, and the familiar scent of her room. She frowned. The last

The air in the dining room was heavy from the moment breakfast began. No one said anything at first. Plates were set, food was served, and chairs scraped lightly against the floor as everyone ate. It looked like a normal morning, but it did not feel like one. Natasha sat quietly, her hands resting

Virginia (2040) Natasha Reese woke up to a banging headache that made it hard to breathe. The pain sat heavy behind her eyes and pressed against her skull, she gasped, fighting through the sleepy fog until her lungs filled with air again. Sweat covered her skin, making her black tank top stick to
