So… Rule Number One: Don’t let anyone find out you’re dating your stepbrother.
Especially when no one at school even knows Jace Carter is your stepbrother.
To everyone else, we were sworn enemies.
Jace was the golden boy—the swim captain everyone admired. The girls wanted him. The guys wanted to be him.
And I was supposedly the one person he couldn’t stand.
Rule Number Two: Don’t get caught having angry sex in public.
Especially not after a fight.
And definitely not when his teammates could walk in at any moment.
Apparently, we had broken both rules.
The storage room behind the Pacific Coast University’s Aquatic Center smelled like chlorine and Jace Carter, my stepbrother who had me pinned to the wall.
His wet hair dripped onto my forehead. My hands were fisted in the front of his hoodie, mostly because I was trying to push him away and failing.
“We shouldn’t be doing this. What if someone sees us?” I whispered, biting my lower lip.
"You've said that four times, and I don’t care. I want you Izel." He grinned that stupid, unfair grin that made girls line up outside swim meets pretending that they cared about swimming.
"I am telling you to—" I started to say and then he kissed me, cutting me off.
Three weeks ago I didn't even like Jace Carter, and three weeks ago our parents got married which means the captain of the swim team currently kissing me was my brand new stepbrother and nobody at Pacific Coast knew and they could never know.
This was our secret. His hand slipped to my waist, pulling me deeper into the kiss as I moaned into his mouth. "Jace...We're going to get caught."
"No one's looking for us." He said and just then, as if God had heard him, the door was flung open, and cameras, the entire school, the swim team and a dozen reporters and approximately two thousand fans were pouring in from the arena after Jace had just broken the NCAA 200-meter college freestyle record.
Every single one of them was staring at us with me pressed against the wall, my boob slightly peeking from my shirt, his hand on my waist.
One reporter looked down at the semester’s registration forms with my full name still sitting on the equipment table then his eyes widened. He looked at me and then back at Jace. "Wait. Is she your stepsister?"
The entire room went silent and the microphones swung toward my face.
To know exactly how I ended up half-undressed against a wall, with the last boy on earth I was supposed to want and be with… you're going to need the whole story. So let's back up. Three weeks, and one very stupid rule ago.
THREE WEEKS AGO
Okay so here's the thing about me. My name is Izel Brooks, I'm nineteen, and I paint murals for fun instead of going to parties like a normal college student. Sue me. I'm a Fine Arts major, at Pacific Coast University in California. I draw comics for the student newspaper nobody reads, and I have exactly one talent that matters in this story.
I am really, REALLY good at loving someone who doesn't notice I exist.
That someone is Noah Bennett.
Noah Bennett, who says after you when we walk through doors, Noah Bennett, who is on the swim team and smiles whenever we walk past each other. Okay…maybe I was just his classmate to him, but what does that matter? I knew there was something between us.
Today was the day I was going to tell him how I felt. I decided it at like 7am over a granola bar and ART211 assignment which, in hindsight, was not a stable foundation for a life decision.
I was going to walk up to him after his swim meet and ask him for coffee. I was totally casual.
My hands were shaking the whole bus ride there, which, again not a great sign, but I ignored it.
I got to the University’s Aquatic Center early and found a spot near the team benches. I practiced the words in my head about nine hundred times and I was mid-spiral when I saw Noah.
And he was with some girl in a cropped hoodie leaning in. LEANING IN while she pressed her humungous tits into his chest.
My stomach did this awful drop thing, I didn’t even know when I left. I was speed walking out of the building with my vision blurry which means that I was about to cry in public, which, no thank you, I was not going to let myself cry out here.
I was so busy blinking back tears that I bumped into Jace Carter, the swim captain. He had the highlight reel on the university’s i*******m and he was so full of himself. My sketchbooks went flying.
"Watch it," he said. He didn’t look sorry, not even a little bit.
"You watch it," I snapped back, scrambling for my drawings before anyone stepped on them.
He bent down and picked up one of my sketches and looked at it for a second too long before handing it back. "This is dramatic," he said, wiggling his brows.
"Narcissist," I shot back, because it was the first word my brain offered. He laughed with his head tipped back, like I'd said something genuinely funny instead of genuinely mean.
By then half his teammates were watching, I felt my face go up in flames, and I grabbed the rest of my sketchbooks and walked away before I could embarrass myself any further and I thought that was the worst part of my day but I was wrong.
I got home to find my mom sitting at the kitchen table with her hands wrapped around a mug of tea she wasn't drinking, and this look on her face that scared me.
"Izel, honey, sit down for a second." she said, wringing her hands. “Richard, my boyfriend and I are…well, getting married.” Her whole face lit up.
I blinked, and then forced a smile on my face. “Mom…wow..that’s…” I ran out of words to say.
"And," she added quickly, like she was ripping off a bandaid, “We're going to move in with him to his place in the Hollywood Hills, after the wedding. It's beautiful, Izel, you're going to love it."
I forced my face to keep smiling and I told myself it was fine. How bad could it possibly be? That night I could not sleep, so I went down to the kitchen for a glass of water. My hair was a mess, and I was wearing the ugliest shirt I owned, but in the dark kitchen, there was a shape there too.
“Mom?” I called out, flicking on the lights. But lo and behold, the shape there was the last person I expected to be in my kitchen. Jace Carter.
"What the hell are you doing in my house?" I said, voice cracking as I struggled to understand what the fuck he was doing in my kitchen.
Jace Carter raised an eyebrow, completely unbothered, like this was the most normal thing in the world. "Actually," he said, "My father and your mother just got married and he's upstairs right
now with your mom.”
“What the fuck?” I spat out, my eyes widening in horror.
Here is a list of things I thought I'd never say out loud in my one wild and precious life. Number One… "I guess I'll just sleep on my stepbrother's couch."And yet. There I was. Standing in the doorway of Jace's room with a duffel bag, a pillow shaped like a taco, and the specific facial expression of someone watching their own life turn into a sitcom pilot."Absolutely not," Jace said, the second he saw me."Cosign," I said. "I’m in full agreement. Do you want to tell your dad or should I?"Neither of us told Richard, obviously, because Richard was currently three glasses of wine deep into telling my mom about contractor invoices, and by the time we worked up the nerve, they'd already started macking on each other.“God! That’s such a gross mom.” I didn’t even know I’d said it out loud, until they broke apart, my mother's face flushing when she saw Jace and I."I’m excited that you two are bunking up," Mom said changing the topic. She seemed delighted, like we were golden retriever
The door didn't creak open like in the movies. It slammed withfull force. I jumped back from Jace so fast I nearly took out a shelf of pool noodles, which, honestly, would've been a fitting way to die. Here lies Izel Brooks, killed by foam and shame."—and that's why you NEVER leave your goggles fogged before a start," Jace said, loud, way too loud, already pushing me away. I blinked. My brain, still fully marinating in the just had his hand in my hair two seconds ago, took an embarrassingly long beat to catch up.I nodded right back, acting the part. “Yeah, that’s right, because fogged goggles are, um. Bad," I said. What am I even saying? I wondered, trying to not instantly burst into flames. And then it was just bodies. So many bodies. Coach Alvarez shoving through first, phone already up and filming, then two guys from the swim team, then a woman with a lanyard and a cameraman jogging backward in front of her, then what I could only assume was the entire athletics department, all
At the mansion, the morning after the pool situation, I came downstairs to find breakfast had somehow become a hostage negotiation. My mom kept sliding looks at Richard. Richard kept sliding looks at his coffee and Jace sat across from me shoveling cereal into his mouth like a man trying to physically outrun a conversation. Okay weird!Maybe I was just overthinking things. Maybe I was the one being weird but for some reason,I could not bring myself to look at Jace. Throughout breakfast, my head was buried in between the orange juice and toast.I tried to paint in my room after. I actually sat down at my easel, brush loaded, blank canvas staring back at me. Twenty minutes later the only thing on it was one aggressive blue line that looked like an EKG line.I gave up and went to campus early, mostly to escape the house, and ran straight into Noah at the quad."Hey — I owe you an apology," he said, hands in his pockets, doing his best wounded-puppy face. "For the whole Bree thing. I shou
I want to tell you I turned around and walked away with some shred of dignity intact, but that would be lying and aura farming.I just stood there, with my coffee in hand watching Noah kiss the girl with the huge tits. By the time he pulled back and spotted me, I'd slapped a smile on so fast I would later think back on this moment and shudder."Izel! Hey!" He waved me over like nothing had happened, because to him, nothing had. I mean it’s not like we were together. "Perfect timing. This is Bree." He said it so easily, kinda like he was introducing me to his favorite food. "My girlfriend."Girlfriend. I was doing all I could not to scream right there and then."Oh! hi," I said, and my voice came out completely normal, which honestly should win me an Oscar. "Nice to meet you." I said to Bree and she smiled at me."Actually," Noah continued, "good you're here. I wanted your opinion and I was thinking of doing something for her birthday, you're the artist, you'd know what's cute, right?"
Turns out arrogant swim gods have secrets too.I knelt there on the concrete staring at him, trying to find the right words to say. What does one really say in a situation like this?“I don’t need that pitying look on your face, Izel.” He shot me a withering look, then inhaled deeply. “I have a heart condition. Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome and I found out about it two months ago.” When I didn’t reply, he continued. It’s this electrical thing that flares up under extreme physical stress.”“Look, you need to tell someone. Have you told your dad? How long do you think you can hide this?” He laughed, but it wasn't a real laugh, "Swimming is the only thing I've ever been good at, Izel. Without it I'm just... a guy." His eyes suddenly watered and he turned away from me. My heart sank for him.I didn't say anything for a second. Because okay, fine, annoyingly, I got it. I got it more than I wanted to. For me, painting is the only place I've ever felt like myself, the one thing that's just
Okay so….Update. My mother is married. Apparently she and Richard Carter have been dating for over a year and got married a few hours ago and somehow managed to keep it a secret from me, her only child, the person who lives in her house and eats her cereal. And Jace Carter, swim god and professional jerk, is his son. Which means, and I need you to sit with this the way I had to sit with this, standing in my kitchen at midnight in my ugliest t-shirt and finding out Jace Carter is my stepbrother."Absolutely not," I said, the second it clicked."Believe me," Jace said, arms crossed, looking at me with barely contained irritation. "I'm thrilled too."We stood there just glaring at each other while upstairs our parents were probably digging each other's guts without knowing that their children were having a nervous breakdown in real time.Jace recovered first and he shook his head. "Fine," he said. "We need to have a rule. Rule number one, and honestly the only rule that matters. You hav
