Chapter 2

작가: Long Black
That night, I lay in bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep. I picked up my phone and started scrolling, then stumbled across a post on a local forum.

"SOS: I fell in love with my buddy's girlfriend, and I don't know what to do."

The poster's profile picture was a piano album cover. My heart lurched, and before I knew what I was doing, I'd clicked on it.

"I love my buddy like a brother. We grew up learning to play the piano together and even made plans to study abroad together someday.

"At one point, I almost gave up on playing the piano, but he was there every single day, pushing me to keep going. I gritted my teeth and stuck with it, and I ended up getting into my dream school. Then he got a girlfriend.

"At first, I was just jealous that she was taking up all the time that used to be mine."

My phone buzzed. A message from Cassidy popped up. "Come out. I'll celebrate your birthday, just the two of us."

I turned off the screen, planning to keep reading the post. But Cassidy fired off another barrage.

"All you ever do is throw tantrums! Don't think I can't tell. You're just jealous that Alec's doing better than you now.

"After you left, he beat himself up all night. He was a mess. He's your best friend, and you're making that my problem?"

Something twisted in my chest, and my vision blurred.

Back then, I'd graduated top of my class at the conservatory and earned the only spot for a year-long program overseas. But I couldn't bear the thought of being apart from Cassidy, and I couldn't stand seeing the disappointment in Alec's eyes.

I'd thought I already had everything I could want, Cassidy and Alec both. So, I gave my spot to Alec instead.

I wiped the corner of my eye and picked up my phone. "You're right. You two really are perfect for each other."

Then I blocked her.

Alec's post was still updating.

"Last year, my buddy gave up his chance to study abroad so I could go instead. What he doesn't know is that I actually envied him more. He had this girlfriend who adored him, and being alone in a foreign country was brutal.

"After I came back, my apartment flooded in the middle of the night one time, and I had no choice but to call his girlfriend for help. We crossed a line that night. And after that, we couldn't stop."

The last part of the post sounded almost conflicted.

"His girlfriend was planning to propose to him today, but he blew up out of nowhere and broke things off. Should I make my move now, or try to get them back together..."

The comments were merciless. People tore him apart.

"Let me get this straight. Your apartment floods in the middle of the night and you call your buddy's girlfriend?"

"You said you wouldn't be where you are without him, and then you go behind his back and sleep with his girl?"

"The audacity is genuinely breathtaking."

Scattered memories suddenly clicked into place. The last time I'd seen them, Cassidy had been wearing a blue-gray headband, and Alec had shown up in a sweater the exact same shade.

I'd even joked about it. "You two are way too in sync. Looks like a couples' outfit."

Neither of them had denied it. They'd just shared a knowing smile.

Not long after that, Cassidy had given me a limited-edition designer keychain as a gift. A few weeks later, I went over to Alec's place and spotted the full collector's box set sitting on his desk.

It all made sense now. I grabbed my phone and looked it up. Sure enough, the keychain I'd gotten was just the freebie that came with the set.

My girlfriend and my best friend had been going behind my back for a long time.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling with a weight on my chest that wouldn't let up. I didn't sleep at all that night.

The moment the sun came up, I hauled myself out of bed and tore through every drawer and closet in the apartment, pulling out everything connected to Cassidy and Alec. It took me until sundown to get it all packed up, and I hauled every last box down to the dumpster.

I'd barely caught my breath when my phone buzzed. It was a text from an old classmate.

"Rhett, what the hell is going on with you three? Cassidy and Alec just went official on social media."

Over the next few days, Darcy kept finding excuses to ask me to dinner. I turned her down every time, citing schoolwork. Then one evening, she showed up outside my apartment building. The second I saw her, I fired off a text to Colton. "I can't believe you sold me out."He sent back a tongue-out emoji almost instantly. With no way out, I walked with her around the neighborhood. We went a long time without talking before she broke the silence."You don't have to go out of your way to avoid me, you know. Colton is your best friend. You can think of me like a little sister."I glanced at her, keeping my tone sincere. "I'm not avoiding you. I'm just not great with people. Getting too close to someone, especially a woman, always ends up complicated."Darcy stopped walking and dropped the playful attitude entirely. She looked me square in the eyes, her voice serious."Colton told me about the woman at the restaurant, that you two were together for years. But you have to move forward a

The crew around us were already throwing curious glances our way, so I had no choice but to nod.Cassidy had booked out the most upscale restaurant in the city center, the entire place just for us. Over dinner, she spoke with easy confidence."Rhett, I should actually thank you. You're the one who lit a fire under me."After you left, I threw myself into work and took over the family business. I used the connections I'd built studying abroad to expand overseas, step by step."She set down her silverware and took a deep breath. "Forgive me for not coming to find you sooner. I wanted to be the best version of myself before I stood in front of you again."She straightened in her seat, doing her best to show me the polished, accomplished woman she'd become.I paused for a moment, then set down my own silverware. "I'm sorry, but my girlfriend's here to pick me up."My gaze drifted past Cassidy to the figure behind her. Darcy Ellsworth smiled at me from across the room, then walked ov

After she left my apartment, Cassidy wandered the streets in a daze.Around midnight, a downpour started. Everyone else scrambled for cover, but she just stood on the sidewalk, completely still, face turned up to the sky. She let the rain hammer against her, as if it was the only thing that could take the edge off.I was far more clear-headed than she'd given me credit for. In the beginning, she hadn't been all that different from anyone else.Alec was new and exciting compared to what she already had. She'd been confident that years of history between us meant he was nothing more than a meaningless fling. She figured once I proposed, she'd cut things off with Alec cleanly and they'd go back to being just friends. But things hadn't gone according to plan. After Alec exposed everything she'd done, I didn't fall apart the way she'd expected. Instead, it turned out she was the one who couldn't let go as easily as she'd thought.Watching me dismantle her case at the hearing, calm and

The school's decision came down quickly. Alec and Cassidy were expelled, exactly as expected.Cassidy's family had money—enough to send her abroad to continue her studies. Alec wasn't so lucky. He'd grown up without much, and piano was the only thing that had carried him this far. Without a degree, any path to further study was gone. The best he could hope for was picking up teaching shifts at small, no-name music studios.Meanwhile, I'd been accepted to one of the most prestigious music academies overseas. In a few days, I'd leave all of this behind and start fresh. Then one evening, Cassidy showed up at my door again. "Rhett."She stood in the hallway looking worn down, dark circles heavy under her eyes. The second she saw me, her face lit up.I stayed in the doorway. "What do you want?"She smiled bitterly. "Can I at least come in before I say it?"I hesitated, but since I'd be gone in a few days anyway, I stepped aside and let her in.Cassidy sat on the couch and let her

The room erupted. Cassidy and Alec hadn't expected this. The color drained from both their faces, and neither of them moved.Students started pulling out their phones to search, and within minutes, Maestro Aldric's autobiography confirmed everything I'd said. The hearing ended with my name fully cleared. At the same time, classmates dug up the forum post Alec had written. The reaction was swift and vicious."Oh my God, he wasn't even hiding it. He was straight-up bragging.""Poor Rhett. Betrayed by his girlfriend and his best friend, and then framed for plagiarism on top of it.""I owe Rhett an apology. I bought that innocent act of Alec's hook, line, and sinker."The scandal blew up across social media almost overnight. A cheating and plagiarism case at a top arts school was impossible to ignore. It was right in the middle of admissions season, and the pressure from the public was relentless. People demanded the school take disciplinary action against Cassidy and Alec. That

Cassidy busied herself in the kitchen while Alec and I stood in the living room in silence. He suddenly reached for my arm, his voice cold with a testing edge. "Rhett."I jerked away from him without a word. His jaw tightened, a flash of resentment crossing his eyes. He glanced toward the kitchen, then slowly stepped closer. He stared at me, and every trace of vulnerability dropped from his face. What surfaced in its place was raw, undisguised spite."I really don't get it, Rhett. How can you still stand living here? This place is covered in memories of Cassidy and me."She's the one who insisted we come here. She said it made things more exciting. We did it everywhere—the couch, the balcony, the kitchen..."He paused, his expression twisting into something unhinged. "Oh, right. She also said you're a dead fish in bed. Boring and uptight."A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, deliberate and taunting.I stood there, stunned, staring at him in disbelief. My stomach churned,
