Chapter 1

Autor: The Moon Returns
Half an hour later, my brother, Callum Lovelace, pushed open the door to the wine cellar and walked in with a cup of coffee.

The light from the hallway illuminated my body, which was curled up beside the door.

"Caroline Lovelace, are you done putting on a show?" He lowered his gaze and kicked my stiff calf with his dress shoe. "You got tired of banging on the door, so now you're playing dead?"

My corpse swayed slightly with his movement and fell still again. I lay facedown on the ice-cold floor, completely devoid of life.

I hovered in midair and watched him quietly. I was the Lovelaces' biological daughter—the one they had brought home from the countryside—yet he protected only his adopted sister, Cecilia Lovelace.

Cecilia followed him in, fanning away the musty air in disgust before adopting a worried expression. "Caroline has been lying on the floor for almost half an hour, Callum. Is she asleep?"

"Asleep? She's giving me the silent treatment to make a point." Callum slammed his coffee mug onto the wooden barrel beside him, his expression dark with anger.

"Does she think if she plays dead, I'll feel guilty and admit I'm wrong? That rotten streak she picked up from that run-down shack in the countryside is really ingrained in her bones!"

Callum strode over, grabbed me by the back of my collar, and yanked me upward. My upper body was forcibly lifted off the ground.

Having lost all muscle control, my head fell back limply. My long hair cascaded down, covering my ashen, ghastly white face.

Callum clearly sensed that something was wrong, but he assumed I was deliberately going limp to resist him. He tightened his grip on my collar, the veins on the back of his hand bulging.

"Caroline, are you really going to fight me on this? You stole it, yet you still have the nerve to defy me? I'm going to break that stubborn streak of yours today!"

Yanking me by the collar, he strode out of the wine cellar. My legs dragged limply across the floor, the tips of my shoes scraping against the rough tiles, making a dull sound.

Cecilia shrank back toward the door, frightened. "Callum, why isn't Caroline struggling at all?"

"She's addicted to playing dead!" he gritted out before quickening his pace. "Since you like to lie on the floor so much, I'll let you lie there to your heart's content!"

When they reached the marble steps, Callum abruptly released his grip. "Get on your knees and apologize to Cecilia!"

Deprived of all support, my corpse toppled forward like a discarded rag.

With a dull thud, my forehead slammed hard against the sharp edge of the step. The impact was so loud that Cecilia yelped.

My body tumbled down two steps before finally coming to a stop on the landing.

A dark red streak of blood slowly trickled from my temple, dripping onto the pristine white carpet.

I floated above them, watching the blood gradually soak into the white carpet.

Surprisingly, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. At long last, I didn't have to desperately prove my innocence to him anymore.

Callum stood at the top of the steps, looking down at my bloodied and battered head. His chest heaved violently, and the disgust in his eyes was almost palpable.

"Didn't you crack your skull open in the hospital last month? Are you doing it again?" He snickered. "Get up and clean the blood off the carpet yourself! If you don't, I'll lock you in the wine cellar again tonight!"

Three months later, the gallery of Courtroom One at the city's superior court was packed to capacity. The judge's gavel came down with a heavy thud, and the entire courtroom fell silent. I floated in midair, silently watching Callum stand in the defendant's dock. In a mere 90 days, he looked as though he had aged two decades.Cecilia, who was only a short distance away from him, looked equally haggard. She no longer looked anything like the glamorous heiress of the Lovelace family. Her hair was dry and brittle, and her complexion was sallow. She cried throughout the entire trial. Her legs were so weak that two female court officers had to support her on either side. "Rise!" The presiding judge's commanding voice echoed through the courtroom. Everyone stood at attention. "The court concludes that the defendant, Callum Lovelace, violated the law by illegally depriving another person of her personal freedom. When the victim's life was in danger, he acted on his own assumptions

The harsh fluorescent lights shone down on Callum's pallid face in the interrogation room of the police department's Criminal Investigation Division. Handcuffed and despondent, he sat in the interrogation chair, staring blankly at the tabletop. The officer in charge of the interrogation walked in with a stack of case files. Instead of questioning Callum right away, he booted up the laptop on the table and turned the screen toward Callum. "Callum, these are the data records recovered from your phone's backend." The officer slapped a printout down on the table. "According to the forensic examination, after the deceased was locked inside the room, her extreme fear triggered heart failure, and it only took two or three minutes for her heart to stop. "During those three minutes, your phone received back-to-back emergency alerts from her smartwatch indicating that she was in critical condition."Callum shuddered, staring at that sheet of paper."Not only did you ignore them, bu

"Place that pillbox into an evidence bag!" the lead officer barked sternly. The two officers beside him immediately stepped forward and seized Cecilia, who was slumped on the floor, from both sides. The cold handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists. "Cecilia Lovelace, you are suspected of hiding the deceased's emergency medication, depriving her of the opportunity to save her own life. We're taking you into custody immediately!"Cecilia trembled uncontrollably as if she had been struck by lightning. She thrashed wildly, her manicured nails clawing wildly at the officers' uniforms. "Unhand me! I didn't kill anyone!"She whipped her head around and cried out to Callum as though he were her last lifeline. "Save me, Callum! Tell the cops that you were the one who locked her in the basement. You were the one who told me not to worry about her! You're the one who abandoned your own sister!"Callum's wailing came to a sudden halt. Like a piece of rusted machinery, his head turned sti

Callum was dumbstruck. "That's impossible!" He shook his head frantically. "She never went anywhere without that metal pillbox. She would carry that pillbox even if she skipped a meal!"Cecilia, who had been standing in the corner, suddenly flinched. Instinctively, she hid the limited-edition Hermès bag in her hand behind her back. Her high heels clicked against the floor as she hurriedly backed away. Like a startled beast, Callum whipped his head around and locked his eyes on her. "Cecilia," he rasped before closing in on her. "Where's Caroline's medication?"Cecilia blanched, shaking her head frantically. "Callum… I don't know… I didn't take Caroline's medication…""This afternoon, you went into her room, didn't you?" He stopped in front of her, his icy gaze sending shivers down her spine. "You told me she was packing her bags to leave the house and threatened me. What on earth did you take from her?"Callum abruptly charged at her, snatching the Hermès bag that Cecilia was fie

The moment the white sheet was pulled back, a dead silence settled over the morgue. Callum stared at my face, his pupils trembling violently. He didn't yell or accuse me of playing dead as he had moments ago. His lips quivered, and his legs abruptly gave out. With a heavy thud, both his knees slammed onto the cold concrete floor. "Caroline…" His entire body trembled uncontrollably as he crawled toward the stainless-steel gurney on his hands and knees. He reached out, wanting to touch my icy cheek. The forensic pathologist beside him hastily seized his wrist and held him in place. "Please don't tamper with the body, Mr. Lovelace."Callum was forced to look up, tears running down his face like water bursting through a breached dam. He parted his lips, but he couldn't force out a single coherent sentence. I floated in midair, watching him silently. "At long last, you believe that I didn't lie to you, Callum. I'm truly dead. No matter how much you cry now, I will never wake

Callum stood at the basement door for a full five minutes. He took a deep breath, turned around, and headed back to the dining room on the first floor. The cake still sat untouched on the dining table. Cecilia sat pale-faced in her chair, her hands clasped tightly together. "Callum… Carol…""She's fine!" Callum strode over and picked up the cake knife from the table. "She's sharp as a tack; she knew damn well that it's your big day, so she deliberately pulled this stunt to rain on our parade!" He brought the knife down on the cake. It veered off course, smashing the white-swan icing on top. "She has such precise control over her own breathing that she even fooled the paramedics. She's truly perfected the art of playing the victim!"Edmund stood beside him with a dust bag in his hands. His face was ghastly pale, and his voice trembled uncontrollably. "Mr. Lovelace…" Callum set the plate down with a hard clatter before Cecilia. "What is it? Spit it out!"Edmund raised the dust b
